The VM 40mm f/2.8 Heliar Lens for Sony E-Mount from Voigtlander is an M mount lens however it is designed to work as a close focus lens with full frame and APS-C Sony E-mount cameras in conjunction with the separately sold Voigtlander VM-E Close Focus Adapter for VM-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera. The lens itself does not have a focusing helicoid so cannot be focused without the adapter and with the adapter it provides a minimum focus distance of 19.7".
The lens itself has a collapsible design which maintains the compact form of Sony E-mount cameras. When collapsed, the lens measures a 0.5" and when extended for shooting it is 0.84" long. An all-metal build provides a solid feel and durability to this manual focus lens. Its optical design includes 5 elements in 3 groups and a 10-blade diaphragm. Its filter thread has a 37mm diameter and included with the lens is a dome and dedicated lens hood.

Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. are there any other options for the adapter, or is the Voigtlander VM-E the only one?
A: There are other companies offer M to E helicoid adaptors. Shoten is the only one that comes to mind. Supposedly quite a bit cheaper, 6mm extension instead of 4mm of the Voigtlander and no infinity lock.I have read good things about it but, I bought the Voigtlander to use the 40mm on my a6000 and have no reason to compare alternatives... yet.
Q: 2. (How does a same portrait compare both at 2.8 with the g-master 24-70 (at exaxt same FL) ( or the EF II canon same zoom) ?(If it was a 1.4 or 1.8 ..I would probably just buy it -even if obviousaly -since fully manual- not Eye-AF compatible :-( )Thank you if anybody happens to do it..)
A: Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to perform specific requirements listed above. The best I may recommend is you may purchase the lens to see if it will work for your needs. If it does not, we do have a Return Policy that would enable you to return the lens for an exchange or refund.
Q: 3. Is it possible to use this lens on a Techart adapter for Sony?
A: That combination has not been tested or reported on specifically. We are of the opinion that the combination can be made but performance is unknown.
Q: 4. What is the inner thread size on the flat lens hood?
A: The thread size for this lens is 37mm.
Q: 5. how do I get the adapter for this lens, how much length does it add to the lens?
A: The adapter is, Voigtlander VM-E Close Focus Adapter for VM-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount CameraB&H # VOSCAMLE Mfr # BD272Aa href= http://bhpho.to/1cZVfta. target= _blank http://bhpho.to/1cZVfta./aAnd it is about 4mm thick.
Q: 6. Just making sure as I want to be 100%, does this come with the adapter or do I need to purchase it separately?
A: The adapter would need to be purchased separately. Additionally this lens has no focusing mechanism so it requires an adapter with a helicoid such as the one linked below.I have read decent reviews of other brands that have released similar adapters but bought Voigtlander.
Q: 7. Is this lens at its shortest (when it's pictured super compact) at infinity and only extend at close focus? Or does it need to be extended to align the elements regardless of focus distance?
A: The lens in its collapsed position is very short. However, to be used it must be extended and locked into position. It is not usable when collapsed. The lens itself cannot focus without a focusing mount/adapter to use it on the Sony E-mount. The adapter focuses by rotating its helicoid, which will be at the shortest position when focused at infinity. The combination, when in use, is not much shorter than, say, the Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4. The real advantage of this lens is that it is very compact for transport when collapsed. It is, in addition, extraordinarily sharp!
Q: 8. Does this work with the Techart Pro VII? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1722621-REG/techart_pro_lm_ea9_leica_m_mount_le
A: Yes, the Voigtlander VM 40mm f/2.8 Heliar Lens for Sony E-Mount should be compatible for use with the Techart PRO Leica M-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Autofocus Adapter (Version II).
Q: 9. When setting the aperture manually on this lens, do I have to make any aperture settings on the sony a7 series camera as well?
A: Not sure I completely understand this question, but when mounting this lens to an A7 (with the Voigtland close focus adaptor) you need to set the camera to 'shoot without lens'. The lens itself is completely manual.
Q: 10. Could I mount this lens on my Nikon Z6 - and be able to focus on other than infinity - using the "KIPON Lens Mount Adapter for Leica M-Mount Lens with Helicoid to Nikon Z-Mount Camera" adapter?
A: Yes you should be able to mount this lens using the Kipon Leica M to Nikon Z adapter since this is an M mount lens.
