Rather than being a clone of a classic mic, the Chandler TG Microphone is a large-diaphragm, solid-state condenser with a design all its own, featuring an integrated equalizer that provides four different settings modeled on the tape EQs found in vintage EMI transfer/mastering desks. The mic's Dual Tone System for midrange-forward or pristine input-stage voicing combines with the onboard EQ to yield a studio microphone with the sonic flexibility needed to achieve impressive vocal and instrument sounds without relying on processing through outboard gear or DAW plug-ins.

Additionally, the TG Microphone offers built-in switches for selection of the polar pattern (cardioid or omnidirectional), -10 dB pad, and low-cut filter at 50 or 90 Hz. Though it is not a tube microphone, it utilizes a dedicated power supply instead of 48V phantom power and has a custom gold-membraned capsule and versatile switchable settings, which contribute to its tonal heft. The TG Microphone includes a 25' proprietary 4-pin mic cable, wooden case, plastic dust cover, and screwdriver for selection of the pad and polar pattern.

The Chandler Limited EMI Abbey Road Studios TG Microphone is a large-diaphragm, solid-state condenser microphone. Continuing the rich tradition of innovation, the TG Microphone is special in its feature set. It isn't a clone of any other microphone, and as the name implies, the sound is TG.

The TG Microphone's onboard EMI Tape Equalizer section combined with its Dual Tone System, low-cut filter settings, pad, dual polar patterns, and dedicated power supply unit (PSU) create an extremely flexible microphone capable of rivaling scenarios where the C414, FET47, U87, and U47 have traditionally found favor.

The onboard Tape Equalizer is adapted from the NAB/IEC tape equalizer facility found on vintage EMI TG12410 transfer consoles or mastering consoles, and applied with great effect in the TG Microphone. Historically used to compensate for tapes played back on machines of the opposite standard, the repurposed tape equalizer allows the engineer to shape the sound at the source with a choice of five settings (one flat), mitigating the need for downstream processing.

The Dual Tone System modifies the input stage of the TG Microphone and extends the versatility of the microphone to accommodate a greater array of sources. System A is what you'd expect, TG is midrange forward, while the alternate B voicing is more pristine, takes extreme SPLs, and is at home wherever a FET47 would be the choice.

The microphone's specialized low-cut filter is frequency selectable at 50 or 90 Hz. Switches are also provided for a -10 dB pad and cardioid/omnidirectional polar patterns.

Much like tube microphones, the TG Microphone relies on a dedicated PSU. The use of a dedicated PSU, rather than 48V phantom power, is integral to the TG Microphone's sound being larger than typical solid-state mics. The TG Microphone makes use of multiple TG amplifier circuits, however, unlike the heralded REDD Microphone, does not feature an internal preamp.

Q: 10. We are looking to get some microphones for our iPads to be used with 5th grade students. Two questions: 1) How good is it at cancelling out other sound that would be present in a classroom? 2) How durable is the microphone?

A: The microphone does not cancel sounds at all. Its cardioid polar pattern provides a high level of off-axis rejection, optimizing it for use recording speech as well as instruments and vocals. It is a reasonably durable microphone, but it will not sustain rough handling like dropping.
