Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I am hoping to combo this head with a pair of Gitzo sticks. If I get the 100mm half ball adapter and combine it with the Gitzo Series 3 legs, will the 509 mount correctly?(Below are the exact products that Im looking at combining it with) Gitzo Series 3 6X Systematic Carbon Fiber Tripod (X-Long) Gitzo Systematic 100mm Half-Bowl Video Head Adapter Series 5

A: I think the 100mm half ball is an universal system. I use my 509 head with a Benro tripod.Regards,Leif Rune Sundli

Q: 2. I have read in forums that Manfrotto fluid heads created in the last few years were not designed to be real fluid heads, instead I have been told that they are friction heads. Does the new fluid technology mentioned in the Manfrotto Nitrotech 608 and 612 mean that the heads use actual fluid for smoother panning along with a better counter balance system with the nitrogen piston technology?

A: Yes, this head does have fluid in it. Manfrotto has informed us that this head does use fluid and that the viscosity of the fluid is one of the things they have improved. This leads to it working much better in lower temperatures.

Q: 3. Has anyone used this fluid head for at least a year regularly (say once a week) and can speak to its long-term performance?

A: On the sales floor at our NYC Superstore we have this model on display in the Pro Video department. Though this may not have been a production application, I have handled this model almost once a week to demonstarte to customers when this model was first released, and a lot of times customers handling it themselves exploring the Nitrotech feature of the head and it is still kicking strong.

Q: 4. Is the N8 head compatable with the Manfrotto carbon legs 755CX3? N8 flat plate is 75mm diameter and the legs have a 50mm top plate. N8 will screw on OK, but ....

A: Yes, this head will work with the Manfrotto 755CX3 legs. Those legs have a 3/8"-16 Stud which will allow this head to connect to it.

Q: 5. Will this still work if my camera weighs slightly under 4kg? Sometimes my rig weighs around 2.5 - 3.5kg

A: It will not. The load needs to be between 8.8 to 26.4 lb / 4 to 12 kg for the camera to properly balance. The only way you'd be able to use the head would be with it locked down, making it so you cannot pan and tilt for a shot.

Q: 6. Is the 509HD a friction head or a fluid head?

A: Perfect fluid heaad

Q: 7. The pay load of 509 hd head is 13.5kg and it has a maximum counter balance of 12 kg,so can i use ursa of 7.5 kg,cannon lens of 4 .5 kg and battery ,view finder of 2 kg,(total of 15 kg) ,on this head? Manfrotto repreaentative says it is compatable to upto 25 kg,plse reply, regards dr asok

A: The 509HD has a load capacity up to 29 pounds or 13.1kg. A total of 15kg is above the load capacity. You would need to look at the Manfrotto 526 instead, which has a load capacity of 35 lbs or 16kg.https://bhpho.to/2NbClNJ

Q: 8. What is the height of this head?

A: This head is 5.9" / 15 cm tall.

Q: 9. Hi, just double check if this head compatible with the 501PL quick release plate? Thanks

A: The short answer to your question is no; the509HD head is not compatible with the 501PL quick release. You may want to consider getting a 504PLONG quick release plate instead. -- B. L. S.

Q: 10. I want to replace my 504HD head (which is broken) with this head. Is it possible to remove the half-ball from the 504 and put on the N8?

A: The ball base on the 504HD is not removable. To get the Nitrotech onto your 75mm tripod, you can use this: Manfrotto 520BALLSH 75mm Short Half-Ball B&H # MA520BSH

Well built and feels durable. Pan and tilt is smooth, counterbalance works great with my 12lb setup. I use it on a dolly and on various tripods

I got this head for heavier camera setups like my Red. I also own the 504x and you can really feel the difference in the continuous counter balance system like this one vs the 4 step counterbalance system from the 504x. So far I'm very happy with the build quality of this head.

I love this video head. Now that I have one, I'm going to replace my other 2 with the N12. Very nice and smooth, and easy to operate.

My old Manfrotto head is still doing well, over 20 years, but when I saw this on Youtube .... The fact that I can walk away and not have to worry about the rig falling forward when I forget to tighten was the only selling point I needed... But man is it smooth... My only complaint is its a little tricky when removing the plate from the base... I'm sure I will get used to it, and it's probably good there is two levers to operate to remove as a safety... zero regrets...

I got this head because of the side-swinging latch. most of the other manfrotto tripods have the spinning latch that can be a pain with certain camera setups. So far this one has been really great to use. the adjustable counterbalance system gives some amazingly smooth tilting motion. feels very sturdy.

This is an amazing fluid head. Easy to balance. Smoothest operation I’ve ever experienced. Definitely the best fluid head I have ever owned. The light for the bubble level is nice. It’s positioning would make it yard to see the bubble without the light in many circumstances. The counter balance system is very granular and can be adjusted in the smallest of increments. I am using it on a peak design tripod with the peak design gn flat base adapter.

This has been a workhorse for me. Ive used it in studio with some Benro CF legs and a half bowl and it hasnt let me down yet. Ive even taken it camping and lugged it around to get some awesome panning landscape shots. Everything is pretty smooth, and using the rubber band trick is even smoother if you dont have the steadiest of hands for some reason. I also like that it doesnt have a minimum weight requirement. A lot of the higher end heads seem to require quite a bit of weight, so having something with adjustable tension that can also take a GH5 with only a lens attached is pretty handy. You dont always need a cage or monitor to have it on a tripod.
