Optimized for notable image clarity at close working distances, the Leica L-mount 70mm f/2.8 DG Macro Art Lens from Sigma is a true 1:1, life-size macro lens well-suited for close-up and macro subjects. As a member of the esteemed Art series of lenses, this short-telephoto prime is also distinguished by its sophisticated optical design that makes use of two FLD elements, two SLD elements, one anomalous partial dispersion/high refractive index element, and two aspherical elements to limit both chromatic and spherical aberrations for high clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A Super Multi-Layer Coating also enhances image quality by suppressing lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Benefitting the imaging assets is a coreless DC motor that offers quick and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments, and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.

Short-telephoto prime, this lens is designed for full-frame Leica L-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 105mm equivalent focal length.

Two F Low Dispersion (FLD) elements, two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements, and one anomalous partial dispersion/high refractive index element are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.

Two aspherical elements are used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contribute to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.

True macro design affords a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a 10.2" minimum focusing distance to suit working with close-up subjects.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.

Nine-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

Coreless DC motor is used for quick and accurate autofocus performance. Additionally, an updated focusing algorithm, full-time manual focus override, large angle of rotation, and focus-by-wire system enable increased and controllable focus adjustment.

The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.

The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.

Compatible with optional EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash when used in conjunction with the separate 65mm Macro Flash Adapter for even lighting as close working distances.

Compatible with optional TC-1401 and TC-2001 Teleconverters to extend the effective focal length of the lens while retaining autofocus functionality.

Q: 1. Can I use this lens (Sigma 70mm f/2.8 DG Macro Art Lens for Sigma SA) on an SD Quattro even though it is a DG lens instead of DC??

A: Yes, you can certainly use it on the Quattro. The cropped sensor will utilize the sweet spot of the full frame 70mm lens.

Q: 2. When this lens is used more for general purpose (such as portraits) is the lens barrel mostly retracted?... and only begins to extend as you truly use it as a macro?

A: Correct the barrel of the lens begins to extend substantially only when focusing on something very close.

Q: 3. Does it focus fast enough for basket ball?

A: Being that this is a macro lens, the focusing would be only be fast enough for slow moving subjects, particularly when you need closer detail. A: This is ideal for macro photos or portraits due to its short focusing distance and telephoto range. A better lens for landscapes would be the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF, B&H # SI2414DGC which is a wide angle prime. https://bhpho.to/2UT1oa8

Q: 6. How is this lens for flat-field art reproduction? Is it sharp, corner to corner? Is there any chromatic aberration to deal with?

A: Very good, this is a flat field lens and is ideal for your purpose.

Q: 7. Would this work on a Canon R5 with the EF-to-RF adapter? If so, would the autofocus work, or just manual focus?

A: Yes, this will work with the EF-to-RF adapter and will autofocus near seamlessly!

This lens is very clean, doesn't allow much light damage to the image, and it carries f/2.8 throughout the focal range!!!!

Excellent lens that rivals the 24-70 f2.8 gm for less than half the price. The only possible downside to this lens is the size and weight but when you consider you are getting a pro lens for $1100 I think it is a tradeoff that is liveable.

When I wanted a standard zoom for my A7 r4, i tried both the Tamron 28-75 and the Sigma 24-70. Both are really excellent lenses but I went with the Sigma because I need the 24mm (makes a big difference) and find the extra controls on the lens very useful (specially the custom button - there is never enough custom controls on the A7 r4).
Only downside of the Sigma (compared to the Tamron) are the extra weight and the price. Both worth it in my case.

Half the price of the GMaster makes this a no-brainer
