Keep your mission-critical data safe while you're on the go with the 1TB Aegis Fortress L3 FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Encrypted Portable Hard Drive from Apricorn. This portable 1TB hard drive comes equipped with a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Micro-B interface as well as an aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum-alloy shell and an integrated, wear-resistant 10-digit keyboard for entering a programmable PIN. USB Type-A and Type-C cables are included.

Designed to meet FIPS 140-2 Level 3 standards, the drive protects your data with real-time AES-XTS 256-bit encryption. Forced enrollment helps to ensure that the drive can't be used without programming a PIN, while an auto-lock feature automatically locks the drive after it's left unattended for a predetermined period of time. The drive is also designed to wipe itself after a set number of incorrect PIN entry attempts.

The hard drive, electronics, external fasteners, and the enclosure itself are all included within this elevated FIPS validation boundary. The tamper-resistant enclosure is milled from a solid block of aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum alloy. Also included are snap-off uni-directional security fasteners and a membrane-style keypad.

Featuring AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption, the Aegis Fortress L3 seamlessly encrypts all data as it's being written to the drive on the fly and it's designed to protect your data even if the hard drive is extracted from its enclosure.

The Aegis Fortress L3 is ready to use right out of the box; no software, drivers, or updates needed. The drive is compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, or most mass storage-compliant systems with a powered USB port.

The Fortress L3 has no factory-preset default PIN. With forced enrollment, the administrator is required to establish a sufficiently complex PIN before the device can be set up or used.

Create custom profiles and mass configure multiple Aegis devices at once with Apricorn's Aegis Configurator (sold separately).

All PIN entries are performed on the device's keypad, making it compatible with systems without keyboards. The drive shares no critical security parameters with its host computer.

The Fortress L3 is designated for specific cases in which the drive needs to remain unlocked, such as during reboot, passing the drive through a virtual machine, or other situations that would normally prompt the drive to automatically lock. When enabled, lock-override mode allows the L3 to remain unlocked through USB port re-enumeration and will not re-lock until USB power is interrupted or the lock button is pressed.

Particularly important in forensics, read-only mode is ideal for applications that require data to be preserved in its original, unaltered state and can't be overwritten or modified. The Fortress has two read-only modes. The first is set within the administrator mode and can only be enabled or disabled with the administrator PIN. The second read-only mode can be set and disabled by anyone with a valid PIN.

In the case of lost or forgotten user PINs, up to four single-use data recovery PINs can be programmed and used to restore access to the data on the drive.

After a predetermined number of consecutive incorrect PIN entry attempts (programmable, up to 20), the L3 will conclude that it is under brute-force attack and will respond by performing a crypto-erase, deleting the encryption key and thus rendering all the drive's data useless.

Designed with protection in mind, the Aegis Fortress L3's keypad is resistant to dust, grit, and water. The buttons coated with a durable polymer that defends against surface wear, ideal for preventing hackers from guessing the drive's most frequently used buttons.

For added PIN length and enhanced security, the minimum PIN length requirement can be increased from 7 characters up to 16.

Indicates positive button entry with visual LED confirmation.

Automatically locks after a predetermined amount of time or interruption of USB hub power.

Offers an infinite number of resets and performs a crypto-erase with new encryption key regeneration.

Q: 1. I plan on using this drive as a second drive in a Thinkpad W510, which has the SATA HD Bay Adapter III (43N3412). This is the thin model drive bay, and I just want to make sure that the WD drive will fit into it. It seems that it should, but I don't want to assume anything. The model number listed above is the thin version, with an approx. total height of 9mm, and made to hold a 7mm hard drive. Will this drive work?

A: If the Lenovo Bay Adapter can accommodate drives up to 9mm thick, then this WD drive will work just fine.

Works fine out of the box, just like it should. But best of all, there's no software or other junk included -- just a plain formatted (GPT) drive. Quiet and (so far) seemingly dependable.

I got this for a client that needed a backup of a ton of files. I was able to reformat it quickly for a Mac and transferred the files in a snap. Was exactly what I needed.

I was getting close to filling up two one terabyte external hard drives that I used for primary and backup storage of my photo files. I found these four terabyte drives at B&H for a very competitive price, along with free expedited next day shipping. I couldn't pass that up. I got the drives the next day and installation was a simple plug-and-play, with no need for formatting or installing any software. The drives are fast and take up much less room on my desk than the drives that they replaced.

I divided this into two partitions, the regular exFAT and encrypted one to use both interchangeably under Win10 and Linux.

NTFS has some nusty quirks you know.

exFAT is what you need to make it working everywhere.
