After about a month of research I settled on the Pentax K-X camera. I have always been a dedicated Canon fan but after comparing specs with the Canon T1i I swayed toward the Pentax. The build quality of the Pentax can't be touched by Canon or Nikon, as they are entirely cheap and light plastic bodies. I use my camera outdoors and mostly on the move so something a bit more rigid is an absolute must for me as the chance to drop it is pretty high(as its almost never on a tripod and I HATE camera straps). Another thing that drew me to the K-X is the chance for HD video recording. Its slowlt becoming the norm for mid-range DSLRs (like the Canon T1i). When you start comparing the price its nearly impossible to turn down the Pentax. The Canon with similar features will run around $799 with only the 18-55mm kit lens. Its just over $700 for the Pentax with the 18-55mm and the 55-300mm! There are some great features and fun in camera image editing features in the Pentax. Another HUGE plus is the ability to use almost 40 years worth of lenses on this camera. Many of which you can find at great prices almost anywhere. The high ISO settings work great for some of my low light action shots (I shoot mostly action sports). There are really too many great features and too much value to list. Take the time to compare the Pentax with anything from Canon or Nikon and you'll quickly see that you get way more bang for your buck with the K-X.

My first DSLR after switching from film SLRs. This camera is great for low light photos without using flash. Super in restaraunts and other public places for non-flash photoshooting. Works great for MACRO photography even with the kit lens. Takes excellent images in the full auto modes as well as the manual modes with manual lenses. This camera is an all around excellent buy. Super bang for the buck.

This camera is as advertised, easy to use for the novice, but allows new techniques to enhance creativity in photography. I have been a Pentax owner for years and have been waiting for this product for a long time. It is making my transition to digital very simple.

So, I got this kit for my birthday. It was purchased to replace my aging point and shoot. A couple weeks ago, I got to borrow my brother's Nikon D5000. Anyway, the image quality is outstanding, my wife loves the fact that it is more compact than other dSLR's we looked at, and the 300mm lens is perfect for long distance sports shots. I also love the digital filters, especially toy camera. In addition, I have taken 1700 pictures, with a sprinkling of flash, and the original Energizer lithium AA's are still full on the battery indicator. As far as what I don't like, the 18-55mm lens doesn't shoot great portraits, and doesn't focus very fast. Also, the 4.7 fps spec for continuous shooting doesn't apply when lens correction or lateral chromatic abberation correction are turned on. It drops to about 2 fps. Finally, a 50mm 1.4 portrait lens costs $360, there are no cheaper alternatives like with Canon or Nikon. All in all, I am incredibly pleased with the kit. My horrible photos have become way less horrible.

I use the KX for Landscape and IR photography. Teamed up with my old 50mm 1.4 K 52mm lens (70's vintage) using a Hoya 720 filter, I can compose and adjust focus on the liveview screen. the igage is dim but usable. i still have to use a tripod at 1/6 sec. to 2 seconds thereabouts, but don't have to take off the filter to set up. Adjusting white balance on a standard green leaf, I just have to reverse color channels and then use levels/white eyedropper an the lightest leaf on the image and viola, an adusted IR image!

Pros:who can complain, your getting every penny's worth And something extra. this is the complete package to get you started into photography. As soon as i opened the box, I snapped in the zoom lens 50-200mm. I was a little hesitant because i didn't know if these were Auto or manual lenses. and what i got my self into. But as it turns out I stuck the gold mine. Both fully automatic focusing. added the battery's and sdhc card, started shooting away at the most random things in my room. for a entry level camera its easy to use and Pentax knows how to blow you away. Its Weather proof frame tells you how well this product is made. I took the kx to NYC, its snowing like crazy and its was like 28 degrees and the camera worked perfect.Cons:Pentax Is different from everyone else yet a little behind in the technology but Perfection and quality Made to fit in the palm of your hand. The 720p Video quality Has to be one of the Nicest new features added to Pentax cameras. but the *.AVI files are Very large a 4gb card can fit 11min of 720p HD. and uploading them on you tube could take all night. but that's what Blue Ray is for. you can always lower the quality. but the quality is amazing at 720. I was a little disappointed that they took away the Bulb feature and its now part of the Tv shutter feature but its something new to learn and fully adjustable. The software that Pentax has isn't all that great. probably never will use it. Oh I was disappointed that the lens didn't come with lens hoods. they do serve a purpose other than looking really cool and like your a pro. they do provide a bit of protection for the lens/glass it self if you accidentally drop it. But thats all minor stuff I Love Pentax ...

I own a Pentax K10D and it is a great camera, but this little White K-x is fantastic!!!! Just attended Digital Days presented by Popular Photography and Sony. Did model shoot with 6 pro models and this camera did a superb job at open Ap and ISO of 800. Pictures are great!!!!! Easily kept up with my other workshop mates, Canons and Nikons! I am anxious to take it to Europe later this year.

The K-x was my second Pentax Digital SLR I have purchased. My first Pentax SLR was the K100d. I bought this camera for the additional megapixel resolution, the antishake features, and the movie recording capacity. Again, I am quite pleased. Pentax has kept alive the tradition of keeping old K type lenses functional in their new cameras. The K-x is easy to hold and has easily accessable controls, and connection ports. It feels well built and robust. The camera is responsive. The K-x holds four AA batteries, and I have used rechargable hybrid type batteries. I have been able to take multiple series of shots as well as use movie mode without needing to change the batteries. The color quality is quite pleasing. It is easy to focus in low light. The camera has multiple modes of operation allowing one to customize. The only slightly odd feature is that the picture delete feature is a shared button with the pop up flash, this is not a problem, but it operation is not intuitive. The instruction manual is well organized and easy to understand.

This camera replaces my K100D and was definitely worth the upgrade. The compact size and lighter weight, higher resolution, DNG RAW, faster continuous shooting, orientation sensor, all add up to worthwhile features for upgrading. As always, Pentax manages to make a solid and substantial camera as opposed to other manufacturers' plasticy budget models. As an experienced photographer, I feel this model is not just for beginners. My only negative is the loss of the top data LCD (instead have to use the rear LCD). In addition, the 55-300mm Lens seems to be a good deal. It replaces my older 50-200mm lens with 100m more reach and is faster to boot. The only downside is the greater size and weight. I sold the 18-55mm with my K100D, so I don't have an opinion on it.
