Bright and versatile, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S from Nikon is a workhorse standard zoom, covering wide-angle to portrait-length fields of view. Characterized by its bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture, this lens is suitable for working in a variety of lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus. The optical design incorporates a pair of extra-low dispersion elements along with four aspherical elements, which help to control chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and sharpness. Additionally, ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats, as well as a Super Integrated Coating, have been applied to suppress flare, ghosting, and surface reflections for improved contrast and color fidelity.
Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. The lens also has a unique physical design, which incorporates a top OLED information panel that can be used to quickly confirm aperture and focus settings, and an assignable L.Fn button permits making exposure and settings adjustments via the lens. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Standard zoom covers a wide-angle to portrait-length range and is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.
Four aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction. A Super Integrated Coating is also featured on multiple elements to help ensure consistently accurate colors.
Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera based Fn buttons to provide a seamless point for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Q: 1. I have noticed that the newer version of this lens has VR. It seems that this lens is a bit heavy. Does anyone feel that the VR is needed? It would be out of my price range to buy the VR, but I do not want to waste my money on the non-vr and regret it either.
A: I just got it , up grading from an 18-105 kit lens, it is a huge improvement. I spent Saturday doing a Christmas photo shoot, over 700 images. It was a dark cloudy day. I am super happy with it , sharp images and we shot until nearly dark with even some of those being keepers. I did not find it heavy at all but I normally shoot a200-500 hand held. I am keeping the lens.
Q: 2. This seems to be the only Pro Level Nikon lens w/o vibration reduction. Do you know if they intend to bring out a model with vibration reduction in the near future? Seems this is the lens where it is most important as it is generally used hand held.
A: This focal range, while being of those most commonly used, falls with a focal range where stabilization is less of an issue until you get to slower shutterspeeds. In photography, the general rule of effectively hand-holding lenses dictates that the shutterspeed should match (or closely match) the focal length. As an example when using a 50mm lens, the slowest shutterspeed one should shoot handheld (without flash or tripod) would be 1/50th or more commonly 1/60th of a second. (Since focal lengths and shutter speeds dont always match up, round up to the next highest shutterspeed). With a 24-70mm lens one should effectively be able to take shots at 1/30th of a second at 24mm and 1/125th of a second at 70mm. With that said, with practice and experience it is possible to shoot at speeds slower than the rule above dictatesthe rule is more of a guide. For what its worth, Canon does not offer IS in their version of the 24-70mm f2.8 lens they offer. Including stabilization would make a lens like this increase in cost and also size and I think for marketability purposes the vibration reduction is not included for that reason. As for the future, anything is possible; unfortunately manufacturers do not inform us of their future intentions. We just have to wait for them to make an official announcement.
Q: 3. is it made in Japan?
A: The Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G is manufactured in China and Japan.
Q: 4. I am trying to choose between the 24-70mm 2.8 and the VR version. I have heard that the sharpness in the center on the VR is softer than the old version but the sharpness on the edge is better. Has anyone used both?
A: Hi Bonnie. I have never used the VR version so I can't directly answer your question. However, I am so very happy with my choice. I have never once thought... maybe I should have bought the VR lens! I shoot it on a D810 and my pictures are crisp and sharp and I have not seen any softness on the edges. Hope this helps! Joe
Q: 5. If I put an ftz adapter on this lens, will it work on the z series well? If so, how good will the image sharpness be compared to the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens on a z series camera (let's say a z7)?
A: Nikon designed the FTZ adapter and the Z series cameras to work with their native lenses, so this lens would work well on the Z cameras adapted with the FTZ adapter. The S version of the lens is the sharpest version of the 24-70 that Nikon has produced to date, so it will be a better performer.
Q: 6. Will this lens perform well when use on Nikon D610?
A: Yes, this is one of Nikon's top tier professional lenses and will perform wonderfully on the D610 camera.
Q: 7. I don't have a full frame camera its a D5600, but can I use this lens without any problems?
A: Yes, the D5600 can use either a crop frame or a full frame lens. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED is fully compatible with the D5600.
Q: 8. Your site says it's a 5 year factory warranty, but the nikon site says 1 year. which is it? thanks
A: The Nikon USA 24-70mm f/2.8 would come with a 5-year warranty from Nikon USA: the first year being international, and the remaining 4-years USA only. For this you would need to register the lens with Nikon USA. The Imported 24-70mm f/2.8 would come with a one-year warranty from B&H.
Q: 9. I have a Nikon D5500, I am looking for a fast sharp lense with zoom to capture landscapes, architecture and portraits with shallow DOF. More or less an excellent all purpose lense. Will 24-70mm work with D5500 and what are the recommendations if not?
A: this is a full frame lens .It would be 36- 105 on your camera.Alot of money too .If you're planning to move up to full frame ok but if not I wound do it .TThere are several alternatives in the 17-55 f2.8 .Tamron ,this would be approx 24-70 .the nikon 17 55 is pro but big dollars .With your camera I would look Tamron 17 55 ,a dx lens good reputation .If you want nikon 17-55 is large but great .
Q: 10. What noises (if any) are typical for this lens? I just purchased my first DSLR along with this lens, and the lens is noisier than I expected when auto-focus is in use. However, I've only used point-and-shoots until now, so I don't have any experience with anything that doesn't have an entirely digital zoom. I've only had mine for about 1.5 months, and I want to be sure I address any potential issues with the lens while it's still within warranty. Thanks in advance for any info!
A: it shouldn't be too loud. mine is very quiet. loud focus motors can indicate damage or faulty parts
