16 high-quality, low-noise preamps are on hand right from the device, accepting inputs over XLR, TA3, and TA5 connections. These preamps outperform all previous Sound Devices pres by any measurable spec. All of them provide 3-band EQs, analog limiting, high-pass filters, adjustable delays, and phantom power.
Need 32 channels of Dante in and out? The Scorpio is equipped for that. It also handles AES I/O and gives you 12 analog outputs. Multiple headphone outs are on hand to suit any kind of situation. Even communication headsets can be accommodated.
Use the Scorpio to mix up to 12 individual buses, all in a compact form factor that works equally well in an over-the-shoulder rig or a mobile environment. With an onboard engine that makes use of three FGPA circuits and six ARM processors, the Scorpio can handle complex routing schemes, pushing audio through its 64-bit engine to ensure a high-quality sound for your demanding, in-the-field needs.
The Scorpio boasts a 256GB internal SSD for recording audio straight to the device, though two SD card slots are on hand for redundancy. Simultaneous recording is supported—though that, of course, might be redundant to say.
The accurate, onboard timecode generator boasts its own battery to hold timecode for up to four hours after you power off the device.
Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. If I use two extra mics, and plug them into the mini inputs, is there a way to control the input level on those extra mics? I see only 8 input controls on the face of the unit.
A: The Mix-Pre-10 II has a single 3.5mm menu-selectable input that can be used for microphones with plug-in power, as an unbalanced line level stereo aux input, or for timecode. This aux input can be assigned as an input source for any of the channels which will allow you to use the level control for that channel to control the mic. The other 3.5mm connection next to that is a headphone output.
Q: 2. will this battery kit work on the mix pre 6?
A: Yes, the same battery kit does work with the MixPre-6 II. We do offer the same batteries and accessories packaged together with the MixPre-6 II recorder which is B&H # SOMIXPRE6IIK.
Q: 3. Can the 1/8-inch (3.5mm) mic/line input be used simultaneously with the two xlr inputs? (IE: with a Rode Wireless Go II kit)
A: Yes, the Zoom H4essential 4-Track 32-Bit Float Portable Audio Recorder can be set to 4-track mode, which enables the use of both its 3.5mm stereo mic input and both combo jack inputs at the same time.
Q: 4. Can you recommend windshields that fit this recorder?
A: For the Zoom H1essential 2-Track 32-Bit Float Portable Audio Recorder, I would recommend the Rycote Zoom H1n Mini Windjammer.
Q: 5. Does the Scorpio unit support the Sennheiser Ambeo VR microphone like the Mixpre-10t?
A: At this time, no. There will be a firmware update at some point, but the folks at Sound Devices do not have a time frame. You can link 4 input channels, but the audio will be recorded in 'A' format.
Q: 6. Do both batteries need to be mounted at the same time? The mixpre does not offer an option for a 7.4 watt power source-only the 14. Can I power with one and select that output? Or is it recommended to utilize both? If I can power with one battery at a time, what power setting do you recommend selecting?
A: I am not seeing an option for both batteries to be used at the same time.
Q: 7. Is there any reason to buy Zoom F3 over the Zoom H4 Essential?
A: The Zoom F3 is a field recorder that is much more appropriate for ENG and Film audio, whereas the Zoom H6Essential is a handheld recorder. It really comes down to if you want to have on-board microphones or not, though. The units will operate the same way when used regardless.
Q: 8. Can anyone recommend a wireless system to send audio from the balanced MixPre outputs to a BMPCC 6k Pro?
A: To send audio wirelessly from the balanced outputs on the Sound Devices MixPre-10 II Multitrack Recorder to a Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, you can use the Remote Audio Unbalanced Adapter Cable TA3F to 3.5mm Locking TRS for Sennheiser Transmitters (B&H # RECASENSK1TL) or the Cable Techniques RX-TRSBL Locking 3.5mm Male to TA3F Receiver Cable (B&H # CARXTRSBL) to connect the TA3 (3-pin mini-XLR) output from the MixPre-10 II to a Sennheiser EW series wireless bodypack transmitter or a similar type of wireless bodypack transmitter. For example, you can use a wireless microphone system like the Sennheiser EW 112P G4 Camera-Mount Wireless Omni Lavalier Microphone System which will accept line level input signal. The Sennheiser system has only one channel, so you will need to purchase two of the Sennheiser systems if you want to send wireless audio from both the left and right outputs on the MixPre-10 II to the BMPCC camera. To connect the output from the wireless receiver to the TA3 input on the camera, you can use the Kondor Blue Mini-XLR Male to Locking 3.5mm Stereo Cable for BMPCC 6K & 4K (B&H # KOMINIPLSBK).
Q: 9. Is it possible to use MixPre-10 II as an audio interface with studio monitors? For example, I want to connect MixPre-10 II with a PC via a USB and MixPre-10 II with studio monitors to listen to my editing sound.
A: Yes. You can use the MixPre10ii as just an audio interface. Your studio monitors would need to be attached the main outputs utilizing ta3 to xlr adapters, such as these BH #SOXL2.
Q: 10. Hi! I have TalentCell Rechargeable Lithium Ion 12V Power Bank batteries and Hirose cable connector. Is it possible to power the equipment that way? Will the Phantom Power of all tracks work? And all system functions? Thanks!
A: Hello Eisejuaz. The MixPre-10 II requires 10 to 18 volts of power at the hirose power port, so your 12-volt power bank should work perfectly. The MixPre-10 II should operate normally on 12 volts.
