The Canon 14mm Sumire Prime T3.1 is an ultra wide-angle, manual focus prime lens that covers full frame and Super 35 sensor formats providing center-to-edge resolution that supports 4K production. It features a PL mount and has focus scales marked in feet. The Sumire lens series is designed with the goal of creating pleasing facial close-ups across all ages, genders, and ethnicities. This effect is increased as the lens approaches its widest aperture. The 14mm offers a maximum T-stop of 3.1 and has an 11-blade iris that provides round natural-looking, out-of-focus highlights for a pleasing bokeh. The lens barrel features 300° smooth rotation from close focus to infinity, giving you a high degree of precision and consistent focus.

The lens is designed to minimize focus breathing. It offers focus distance markings on both sides of the barrel with the rear markings on an angled surface, making it readable from either side of the camera. Some of the markings are done in phosphorescent paint, making them easier to see them in dim conditions. All lenses in the Sumire series share the same 114mm front barrel diameter, focus rotation, and focus and iris gear positions, allowing for easier lens swaps.

The Sumire Prime Lens series features a nuanced look as the lens aperture approaches its maximum setting. This subtly modifies the textural renderings of the human facial close-up and a pleasing bokeh.

The lens features a large-diameter aspheric lens and anomalous dispersion glass, for high-resolution image reproduction from image center to image edge. The lens produces warm color tones that help to softly capture facial expressions, and shares a unified color balance with other Canon Cinema lenses.

The 11-blade clickless iris produces artistic and beautiful out-of-focus areas, creating a more three-dimensional bokeh. The use of an odd number of blades helps reduce flaring of specular highlights.

The Sumire Prime Lens series features a unified front diameter (114mm), rotation angle (300°) and gear position on the focus and iris rings.

The focus and iris rings are designed to maintain a consistent amount of resistance and operating torque in order to help provide the camera operator or assistant with predictable lens operation.

Lens markings are displayed on both sides of the lens. To improve visibility in dim light conditions, indicator markings with phosphorescent paint have been adopted for the front barrel for right-side viewing.

All lenses in the series except the 14mm accept a 105mm diameter threaded filter in the front of the lens.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a filter solution for this lens?

A: You can use a mattebox with this lens to be able to use filters with it.

Q: 2. Are the lens optics, coatings and build quality of the Samyang 14mm T3.1 VDSLRII identical to the Rokionon 14mm T3.1 DS lens?

A: The lenses are made in the same factory by the same people. If there are significant differences between the two lenses, they have yet to come to light.

Q: 3. Other than brand marking, is the Samyang 14mm T3.1 VDSLRII identical to the Rokinon 14mm T3.1 DS lens? The Rokinon costs more, so I'm wondering if the build quality and/or coatings are different.

A: They are the same lens, different branding.

Q: 4. what is diferent about mark II and mark I lens?

A: The Mark II (Mk 2) versions feature revised placement of the focus and aperture gearing so that they are consistent with the other cine lenses made by the manufacturer.

Q: 5. Is there any way I can use Tilta Mirage matte box with this lens? The petal hood is built-in it cannot be removed.

A: The Rokinon 14mm T3.1 DSX Ultra Wide-Angle Cine Lens (EF Mount) will not be compatible in any way. I suggest using a mattebox with a sock, like the Camtree Camshade Video Matte Box.

Q: 6. Does this lens support 6k resolution? Can i put a circular ND filter & is there a 114mm circular ND filter?

A: This lens is capable of full 4K-Resolution performance. You can use 105mm screw in filters on all the Canon Cinema Prime Lenses. Here are three suggestions in good-better-best order: Tiffen 105mm Coarse Thread UV Protector Filter B&H # TIUVP105, B+W 105mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter B&H # BWUVMC105, Sigma 105mm WR UV Filter B&H # SIUV105Q.

Q: 7. What kind of horizontal distortion does this lens render on full frame around the top and bottom of the frame? Does it have barrel distortion, bulge distortion, pincushion distortion, or wave/ wiggle distortion? Do lines stay straight horizontally?

A: All extreme wide lenses exhibit some level of barrel, chromatic, and rectilinear distortion. If you wish to avoid these negatives while using wide lenses, do not get too close to your subject and cause barrel distortion or tilt and cause leaning lines. That being said, rarely are there any wide lenses that are truly bad otherwise lens manufacturers would not make any money. Getting on to your question, this Xeen 14mm lens' performance is not known at this time. However, it is based on the Rokinon 14mm and we know that to be very good, especially in light of its low price. Final note: Wide and tele lenses have characteristics unique unto themselves. In the beginning of their camera career, people often look at these characteristics as negatives to be overcome. In time, the user knows what to look for and then exploits these characteristics to storytelling advantage.

Q: 8. If you had to choose one cinema lense for a short film with the C100 Mark II, is this lense a good option?

A: No, this is an ultra-wide lens and if you are shooting an entire film with one prime lens, a 35mm or 50mm would be much better. The Canon 24-105 L series zoom works perfectly with the C100 and can provide image stabilization and auto-focus as well as lens distortion correction in one compact package.

Q: 9. Is this lens compatible with Canon T3i ?

A: Yes it is

Q: 10. Can this lens work on aps-c sensor? I have an A6400 but I am curious if there will be crop on the image or if adapter is needed.

A: Yes, the Rokinon 14mm T3.1 DSX Ultra Wide-Angle Cine Lens (Sony E Mount), and all other full-frame lenses, can be used on an APS-C camera.

Wow, with all the new tech thats available, im so ecstatic to say that the rokinon lens i got was a great buy. The lens is tact sharp at all apertures, and obliviously gets sharper when stopped all the way up. I used this lens as a walk around lens for Halloween and boy i caught all the action with it. Im Glad i dove in and bought it! 5 stars!

I use this lens as a general purpose wide angle lens with an emphasis on landscape and night sky photography. The lens works well on my Canon 70D and has proved to be a sharp lens. Being an old film and manual camera guy I actually kind of enjoy going full manual when I have this lens mounted to teh camera. The only thing I miss on this lens is the ability to add a polarizing filter but I knew that before I bought it so I don't really consider it a negative.

I caught this baby on sale during Black Friday and it's worth every penny. I'm very happy with how sharp my copy is and please make sure you a comfortable with shooting manually. I believe many people are attracted to the price and how wide this is, but not equipped with the practice to shoot manual. That is one reason why someone would give this lens a low rating. You have to be willing to learn if you're coming from straight autofocus (AF) every time you shoot. Great lens, and great price. I highly recommend this lens if you cannot afford the Canon version. Use this as a practice lens before deciding to buy the Canon version.

I pretty much have this lens attached to my 5D Mark ii 90% of the time. I use it for street shooting, landscapes, general walk arounds and Light painting. I love the ability to control the f stop directly on the lens. I tend to keep my pictures to -1 on the view finder meter, I tend to find it's better to shoot lower and boost what I need in lightroom. This lens makes my camera feel much light as opposed to my 24-105 and even when I used the 24-70. The night shots are amazing. I bought this lens for milky way photos and It was so easy to use and the sharpness is crisp. It does have the distortion folks talk about but it's easy to get rid of in post. I'm not thinking of selling some Canon lenses I don't use for more Rokinons. Possibly the 35mm. I was skeptical to buy this lens but I'm super glad I did. - One note, do some focus tests. I learned that on my copy infinity is actually on 3, not the infinity mark, but that doesn't bother me. Only down side I can think of is no affordable filters. The new Lee Filters system is pretty pricey if you aren't making the money to really counter it. It would be nice if Lee could sell you a packaged deal instead of, $ for the holder, $ for the ring, $ for the filters. (not actual prices)

I very much enjoy this lens. It is very wide and not for everyone, but I have found a lot of different oppotunities where it works. It does have a bit of complex distortion, but LR will easily correct most of it. It is unbeatable at this price. A word of advice, mind your toes or you will see them in the frame.

If you like wide angles, this is a great lens. For an ASP-C, angle is right at 90 degrees. Great for nighttime shooting. Sturdy lens. Keep in mind this is fully manual, so don't be surprised by that, lean into it. It is easier to get the sharpest focus when you use the screen on your camera rather than the viewfinder.

I ordered this lens on the advice of a local photographer and I absolutely love it! It is perfect for dark sky photography and also as an overall wide angle lens! Not sure if it will ever come off my camera.

I primarily use it for shooting northern lights and the Milky Way and it is really sharp for the price and it's focal lenght. I use it on a Sony a7 and I didn't found any problems most people seems to talk about, at least on my copy. The infinity mark is spot-on and there's no signs of decentering. I really like it!
