Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. I just got this lens for an Olympus EM1-ii. Can't seem to get the focus peaking to work. Works fine with the one other manual focus lens I have. Is there some limitation with being 400mm or f/8?
A: According to Olympus, they state this must be an isolated lens issue. There is no in-camera reason for lack of focus peaking. You simply need to customize a button to focus peaking usage. Tap the selected customized button to turn on focus peaking, and tap the button again to turn off the focus peaking feature. If there is still no focus peaking, then it is really a lens issue as focus peaking depends on contrast to work; no electrical lens contacts are needed.
Q: 2. Is it necessary to post-produce a lot (sharpening, contrast, etc) your original file from this lens to get something good ?
A: It would really depend on how the focus and exposure was done in camera.
Q: 3. Have a Nikon D3100. Would this one work for it? Do I need something else? Additionally, is this one better than the vivitar 500mm? Which one is better for landscape photos, or moon photos? or wildlife (say, birds) from afar?
A: To use this lens on the Nikon D3100 in order to shoot subjects that are very far, the Vello T-Mount Lens to Nikon F-Mount Camera Lens Adapter, BH # VELANFT is needed. Although the optical quality is better on this lens, it would offer less range versus a Vivitar 500mm T-mount lens. https://bhpho.to/2KGl6ow
Q: 4. Could you use this for photographing the moon, or non-moving wildlife?
A: Yes, you will have to bump up your iso to compensate for the small aperture of f/8.
Q: 5. Has anyone used this lens on a 90D or another camera that doesn't have focus peaking or vibration control? If so, were you able to get reasonably sharp photos without camera shake being an issue?
A: It's definitely going to be a bit more difficult focusing with a 90D or DSLR that doesn't have stabilization or focus peaking. I would recommend using a tripod and a shutter remote to maximize stability. Even with focus peaking and stabilization, the lens still requires critical focusing.
Q: 6. I have the M50 therefore this would require the adapter it comes with plus the ef to m adapter. Would this work?
A: Yes, this comes with the EF adapter, thus you'd just need the EF to EF-M adapter to get it on to your Canon EOS M50.
Q: 7. If I use this lens on a D500 that has a cropped sensor, will the true focal length be somewhere around 600MM ?
A: The angle of view of the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens for Nikon F on the D500's crop sensor would be roughly equal to the angle of view of a 600mm lens on a full-frame image sensor.
Q: 8. Last question, I think. I currently use, for "distance" photo, a 55-200 Nikkor. Going from this to this 400mm, is it too much of a difference regarding quality and distance? (not sure how much difference there is between 200 and 400mm). Additionally, in image the lens seems "small", when comparing to vivitar 500mm. Is it that size or you have to "open" it?
A: This lens would be double the magnification of your 55-200mm at the 200mm end. This lens would be more compact that the Vivitar 500mm lens. Please feel free to reach out to us directly via Live Chat or e-mail to askbh@bhphoto.com with any other questions you may have.
Q: 9. Is this apse or full frame? Listing says both.
A: Hi, this is a Full Frame lens.
Q: 10. I already have T adapters for several cameras (e.g., Canon 5DIV and RF). Will this lens work with those adapters or only with Tokina's adapter?
A: This would be compatible with the T adapters that you already have.
