The EOS C300 Mark III features Canon's next-generation Super 35mm Dual Gain Output (DGO) Sensor. This new sensor is capable of dynamic ranges in excess of 16 stops and is compatible with Canon's exclusive Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus technology. The DGO Sensor is a newly developed imaging system that generates high dynamic range and maintains low-noise levels by reading out each pixel with different gains. It combines images using pixels shot with a saturation-prioritizing amplifier for bright areas, and a lower-noise, noise-prioritizing amplifier for darker areas.

The EOS C300 Mark III features Canon's DIG!C DV7 image processor that takes the extensive raw information captured from the imaging sensor and processes it for output. DiG!C is also the engine behind features such as high frame rate recording, Dual Gain Output (DGO) Sensor, Dual Pixel Autofocus, Cinema Raw Light Recording, HDR (PQ) output, Electronic Image Stabilization, and proxy recording.

The Cinema EOS C300 Mark III features Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology. For DAF, each pixel in the camera's CMOS sensor is configured with two photodiodes. Two independent image signals can then be detected at each photosite and compared using phase difference to provide autofocus with compatible lenses. DAF can survey the scene and recognize not only whether the subject is in focus or not, but in which direction (near or far), and by how much. DAF also powers the intuitive Focus Guide for users who prefer to focus manually but enjoy the positive feedback DAF provides through the guide interface.

The EOS C300 Mark III is capable of ultra-high frame rates with its new chip design and DiG!C DV7 processor. Frame rates up to 120 fps can be obtained in 4K, while 2K CROP mode provides even greater flexibility with speeds up to 180 fps.

The EOS C300 Mark III supports both Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3 gamma. In post-production, Canon Log is designed to reproduce the entire tonal range that the CMOS image sensor is capable of. Log workflows provide the user with a higher dynamic range, more highlight and shadow retention, and more flexibility in grading.

Canon Log 2 provides the largest dynamic range and image detail. While Canon Log 2 provides the most post-production flexibility and full dynamic range of the sensor, it typically requires more time in color correction.

For users looking for most of the benefits of Log workflow, but with shorter turnaround times, Canon Log 3 provides an alternative with only a slightly reduced dynamic range of 14 stops.

A new modular design allows productions to optimize and customize the EOS C300 Mark III to specific shooting needs. Accessories and expansion units can be easily attached to provide different levels of functionality. The camera is equally at home fully rigged with a large zoom lens, FIZ unit, audio accessories, and rangefinder as it is stripped down flying on a drone.

Thanks to the powerful DIG!C DV7 image processing platform, the EOS C300 Mark III can record Cinema RAW Light directly to two onboard CFexpress cards. Cinema RAW Light offers plenty of freedom for grading with a dynamic range that can exceed 16 stops with Dual Gain Output (DGO) technology while maintaining file sizes that are about 1/3 to 1/5 the size of Canon Cinema RAW. Canon Cinema RAW Light offers a great combination of codec efficiency and quality.

In addition to the conventional Intra-based XF-AVC codecs, a 4:2:2 10-bit Long GOP-based codec has been added with consideration for a balance of quality and data rates. This new Long GOP-based codec has a data rate that is less than half that of the conventional Intra codecs. This new lightweight codec makes it easier for users to reduce media costs and work with cloud-based infrastructures.

The EOS C300 Mark III Digital Cinema Camera incorporates the new Canon XF-AVC codec that allows 4K and 2K image data to be recorded internally onto CFexpress cards in workflow-efficient file sizes using advanced video compression. Using the XF-AVC codec, the EOS C300 Mark III can record a variety of frame fates up to 4K 120 fps and 2K up to 180 fps.

The LM-V2 4.3" LCD Monitor is an easy-to-view touch panel with approximately 2.76 million dots. The monitor easily attaches to the EOS C300 Mark III using included accessories and can be adjusted to different viewing positions. The LCD monitor is capable of displaying both image framing and visual confirmation of camera settings. Additionally, the display has a control interface to make it easy to access and change camera settings.

The EOS C300 Mark III supports up to 4-channel audio recording. Audio input from the camera's internal microphone, mini mic port, and XLR ports can be assigned to the four different audio channels. With the Expansion Unit EU-V2, a total of four XLR ports are supported. This flexibility allows for a wide range of audio devices to be connected and mixed directly on the camera.

Users can upload and apply custom LUTs to the EOS C300 Mark III. LUTs can be assigned to specific output terminals, LCD, and viewfinder. Clients can be viewing one LUT, while production works from another, giving different production roles the ability to customize the look of the image to their needs.

User-interchangeable lens mounts and an available B4 mount adapter gives operators the freedom to make bold creative choices based on the subject matter. The EOS C300 Mark III ships with an EF mount that can be user-swapped to an optional Locking EF (EF-C) or PL mount. Each mount swaps easily by simply removing four M3 hex screws. A shim set is provided with each mount kit in order to adjust back focus for the precision in focusing accuracy that professionals rely on.

The EOS C300 Mark III offers cinematographers support for the use of both 2.0 and 1.33 anamorphic lens types. Users can achieve the wide cinematic looks, oval bokeh, and striking flares particular to anamorphic glass. It is a distinctly cinematic palette that is within reach for your next project.

Higher resolution, greater bit depths, and faster frame rates provide versatility and greater image quality but come at the cost of much larger file sizes. Proxy files can greatly speed up the editorial process by providing a lower bandwidth alternative for initial file sharing and rough cutting.

Canon's powerful high-speed DIGIC DV7 image processor makes it possible for the EOS C300 Mark III to simultaneously record 2K Proxy files. Cinema RAW Light can be recorded to the internal CFexpress card, while an XF-AVC 2K 4:2:0 8-bit proxy can be recorded directly to an internal SD card. The C300 Mark III can also apply LUTs to Proxy recording.

The EOS C300 Mark III includes the same built-in five-axis electronic IS introduced with the EOS C500 Mark II that works with almost any lens, including anamorphic.

Support for 12G-SDI allows for the EOS C300 Mark III to output 4K resolution up to 60p over a single BNC cable.

The EOS C300 Mark III body has a remote A terminal (LANC) on the body and supports remote B (RS-422) in both expansion unit EU-V1 and EU-V2. Through these connectors, the EOS C300 Mark III can be completely remote-operated either by a standard LANC compatible cable or over longer distances through the use of a serial connection.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Reviews mention it can shoot 4K 120fps. But the specs here on B&H say only goes up to 59.94fps. Does it shoot 120fps in 4K, and if so what codecs (RAW, 4:2:2, or 4:2:0)?

A: The Canon C300 Mark III can record in 4K 120fps in both Cinema RAW Light and the XF-AVC codec. https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/cinema-eos/eos-c300-mark-iii-digital-cinema-camera

Q: 2. What's most different between this & the mark 2 ?

A: the biggest differences are the sensor resolution and dual grain structure on the 2 camera. the c300mIII is also a new body type. it's essentially the same body as the c500Mii

Q: 3. What is the native ISO on the camera? It isn't dual native, correct?

A: The native ISO of the camera is 800, however, when you turn on the DGO mode (Dual Gain Output), the camera is able to maintain low-noise levels at higher ISO numbers.

Q: 4. How long does a BP-A60 battery last on this camera?

A: Some users have reported run times of 4-5 hours, but we lean toward the more conservative 3-4 hours to account for differences in usage. Some people will operate many of the camera functions (especially if shooting sports) more frequently than others (interviews or blocked narrative filmmaking), thus we like to account for those differences and stay on the safe side of approximation.

This image is certainly not the greatest composition; so why send it out?

Many years ago now, when I started back to photography and specifically digital cameras; I did a fair amount of reading. One accomplished photographer (Arthur Morris, Birds as Art) had a quote that stuck with me. Paraphrased, “Get the Eye Sharp and everything else will be forgiven.”

This year, Canon began to ship their latest high end camera; The EOS 1DX Mk III. The brag sheet claims that interested me was a better focusing system and new sensor.

I have owned every top of the EOS line cameras for the past 15 years. I have taken and viewed hundreds of thousands of images taken all over the world. Cutting to the chase and sparing you the long story; this camera is absolutely amazing. This image was taken from a rocking boat with lots of lens that doesn’t usually deliver the sharpest image. Zoom in on the eye if you are interested and see what this camera can do. Below are some of the details of my settings:

600mm lens with a 1.4 Tele Converter (840mm)
ISO 800
F8
1/1250th shutter speed

Not all of you are Canon shooters and I apologize for the intrusion. I am sure the new D6 from Nikon will be good too.

However, this new Canon is the best I have ever experienced!

I am not a pro shooter. I have been shooting with 1D Mark IV for several years so there is a big learning curve. The image quality is outstanding. I am still going through many of the features, but to date nothing has disappointed. This camera is well worth the money if you have it to spend.

As a current owner of the 1Dx, 1Dx Mark ii, and now 1Dx Mark iii, I have paid B&H enough for a small house! Ok, maybe a small car. Regardless, this flagship camera from Canon is what I believe to be the very top of the line, especially for shooters looking to capture wild life and sports. That’s not to say this camera is anything but stellar for portraits and landscapes, etc. but I think the 1Dx Mark iii really excels at capturing fast action shots, even in low light.

While I could go on about camera build, how it feels in my hands, and the fact Canon kept most of the controls in line with past versions of the 1Dx, (making the learning curve easier) the real gem is it’s auto focus system. Lightning fast and adapts to a number of different scenarios, auto learning and face/head tracking. This is incredible in helping assure that once you’ve gotten focus lock, you’ll likely keep it. For those who specialize in tracking athletes, you can imagine how wonderful it is to increase your ability to capture the moment of peak action! By the way, the 16 to 20 frames per second helps.

If you are debating whether or not to make the jump into this camera, try it. It is a fantastic piece of technology. Well done, Canon....and many thanks to B&H for their exceptional ability to deliver this to me in February, 2020. Thanks to you, I was able to shoot the tail end of college basketball season and even a couple of baseball games prior to the current and unfortunate shut down. Stay safe and well everyone!

Approaching the 1 month mark since having this camera. I upgraded from 5D Mark IV and EOS R. Both great cameras don’t get me wrong. So far I’ve shot a parade in South Florida down pouring rain, shot ATV beach and back country Jamaica and took the camera for an in water white river tubing shoot.

Buttons perform without a hitch in all conditions. Shots were incredible. When people see this behemoth they immediately want their pictures taken because a camera like this just attracts.

Lightening fast, unparalleled performance, all weather workability. Auto focus is crazy! CF Express card 64GB has all I’ve been using with 24-70mm. I’m not a quote on quote pro but I enjoy the art of taking phenomenal pics. It’s truly fun using this and I actually enjoy carrying it around. Thank you to the guys at B&H Photo for a great purchasing experience and being very informative about the product and every step of the way. Honest team of professionals at B&H and

I have shot a few athletic events since mine arrived a couple of weeks ago. AF is even more responsive than the excellent 1DX II and detail/noise is obviously better at higher ISO when shooting indoor sports. I will continue to use my 1DX II as a second body at sports events with my 1DX becoming semi retired. A great family of cameras.

I own the Mark I, II and now the III and I have to say it is fantastic! Tracking is finally up to par for BIF, it's not miles ahead of the Mark II but it definitely shows improvement in holding onto subjects moving in front of busy backgrounds such as trees. Once you lock on, you have it.
Picture quality is also better for jpegs (haven't tried the Heif yet), and Raw pictures which I am currently using Canon's own software DPP (easily downloaded from their site; third party software is still not up to this latest version of raw other than Lightroom and Photoshop and Canon's software).
I haven't mastered the smart controller on the rear yet due to the cold New England weather, but on the few occasions that I have used it I know that it will become very useful in focus point selection (it can be very sensitive as I needed to turn down the sensitivity of the control in the menu).
Going from the Mark II to the Mark III I have noticed the increase of frame rates immediately (even though it is only 2fps), this camera is fast. I tried using the live view functionality but given that most of my shooting is outdoors it was difficult to follow the subject on the LCD, but the tracking and frame rate hit was excellent. I cannot comment on the video capabilities as I rarely take videos, I'm more into still photography.
All in all this is a great camera and I have a lot more to take advantage of on this camera to realize it's full potential.

Mark II to Mark III was worth the upgrade. Primary use for photography - burst in RAW with crazy write speeds. Video capabilities impressive. Worth the size and weight difference compared to EOS R.

The auto focus is far improved as is resolution and image quality. The shutter is quieter and setting focal points is great, sliding your thumb on the 'AF-ON' button. The one disappointment was that the SanDisk reader didn't work.
