Q: 8. Hi.I own an old Davis & Sanford Carbonlite Transporter with a Z10 head.I am wondering if the Z1 would fit on my tripod (instead of my current Z10) and if so which screw I should choose (1/4 -20 or 3/8 )?Actually, I wish I could get the Z1 head with the Wimberley C-12 Quick Release Clamp in order to add a P-30 QR Plate, but all of that without having to buy a new tripod. Thanks a lot for your forthcoming answer.

A: Your helpful answers were exactly what I needed. Thanks a lot to you all.

Q: 9. Hi! I just bought this AS Monoball Z1 sp w flat disc, assuming I could remove the disc and install an RRS QR system, however read conflicting article that it will not be user replaceable. I will send it back if thats the case. Can I remove the flat disc or not? I don't want to screw the RRS QR plate on top of the disc. Thanks

A: I bought the Arca Monoball Z1 sp with the flat disc in 2014, and proceeded to do exactly as you intendremove the flat disk and install the RRS QR clamp. My procedure was to firmly clamp a 3/8 bolt into my vise and then mount the Z1 to that bolt. Then I positioned the flat plate into the Z1 vertical slot (the 90 degrees slot) and firmly tightened all the Z1 controls. Then fit an appropriate socket to the hex-head attaching screw and apply CCW force (the screw is a common right-hand-thread). The relief around the hex-head attaching screw is tight, so it may be necessary to fit a thin-wall socket. In any case, be certain the socket gets fully inserted on the hex to avoid rounding off the hex. I used a long handled ratchet on my 3/8-drive socket to allow me to apply the necessary torque (around 20 to 30 foot-pounds).In late 2013 the photo press mentioned that Arca had replaced their thread sealant with a more permanent epoxy type, which was impossible to remove. I purchased my Z1 in mid 2014, and the flat plate was easily removed with moderate torque. However, if your later-issue Z1 proves recalcitrant, try applying pinpoint heat to the hex-head attaching screw immediately prior to applying removal torque a few seconds with a propane torch should add the necessary heat. Or simply send the Z1 to their US repair facility (Precision Camera) and let them do it for a few dollars. Turn-around time is usually very fast, and it will be money well spent.Ive used a selection of ball heads, and I feel the Z1 to be one of the best. Coupled with an RRS clamp, this is an excellent platform.

This is a great product. The adjust nob requires little movement to lock the ball. Another great benefit is the aspherical ball that creates more tension as the ball rotates downward. This restricts the camera from flopping down as long as there is some tension on the ball. I also have the RRS BH-55 ballhead. It is a well machined piece of equipment. With heavy gear, attached, the ballhead will drift as it is being tightened. Very frustrating if you are trying to make precise adjustments. The Monoball Z1 is superior to the RRS BH-55. I am not knocking RRS - my primary tripod is a RRS and all of my clamps and L-brackets are from RRS. They are a great company with great products. The Monoball Z1 is a superior product. I purchased a RRS lever release clamp B2 AS II with M6 screw. The ballhead with this clamp is ideal.

I tried a Vanguard SBH 300.......as others have complained, when you get your camera positioned, and then tighten the knob, the camera moves......NOT GOOD. I tried two models of Acratech heads.........nice and light weight, but not firm enough on the lockdown. I have had the Arca-Swiss for over a year now, and have had NO problem, just good, solid service. You get what you pay for is still true.

Easily catch a big camera body. Setting is very smooth. I choose no quick release clamp model. Because I will be able to changed to Arca style clamp by kirk or Really Right stuff easily. All system is so great!

The thought of ever spending more than $50 on a tripod just KILLED me. But after years of hearing reputable photographers whose work I admired recommend that investing in a high quality tripod is just as important to amazing and sharp photographs as the camera itself, I buckled down and began researching a tripod assembly. In terms of ballheads, I read countless posts from other photographers on the regrets of spending less $ on a lower quality ballheads only to ditch them to buy an Arca-Swiss. I've been willing to invest in high quality lenses. Thus, I decided to be serious and invest to build a quality tripod support assembly. MyArca Swiss is part of what I called a Dream Team tripod assembly. I paired the Arca Swiss with the Really Right Stuff B2 AS II Clamp with M6 Screw. This combination sits on a Gitzo GT 2531 EX Explorer. I couldn't be happier. I am glad I did not go for the Arca Swiss lever clamp which many people have complained about. The Arca Swiss combined with the Gitzo Explorer essentially allows me to easily position my camera in any position I wish. I highly recommend the Arca Swiss. It is as smooth as everyone claims it to be. It locks into whatever position you set with no slippage or creepage. If you can spend the money, I say jump in with both feet because you won't have any regrets when you start using it.

This MONOBALL Z1 SP differs from pan head that has been used up to now, and is steady surprisingly. I think that I have the function more than cost by this MONOBALL Z1 SP.
