An apt telephoto prime for portraiture and other selective compositions, the Micro Four Thirds-mount 85mm f/1.4 WS Mk2 Lens from Samyang is characterized by its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture to suit working in low-light conditions and for controlling depth of field. The optical design incorporates one hybrid aspherical element that helps to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering. An Ultra Multi-Coating has also been applied to reduce flare and ghosting in order to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity. The manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 3.6' away and a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes a pleasing bokeh quality.

Telephoto prime is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 170mm equivalent focal length.

Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture offers a high degree of control over depth of field for working with selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques. Additionally, it also benefits working in low-light conditions with shorter shutter speeds.

One hybrid aspherical element is featured in the optical design to control spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness throughout the aperture range.

An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for increased contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.

Manual focus operation permits working with subjects as close as 3.6' away and an internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during use.

The aperture ring de-click function allows the aperture ring not to be stopped at every f-stop in the way cine lenses do. This selectable function will allow brightness to be adjusted continuously and smoothly with much more details between the stops.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

Weather-sealed design suits working in inclement weather conditions.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Would this work on a Canon T7?

A: Yes it is compatible with the Canon T7.

Q: 2. Is there an additional piece that increases the length to mount to sony or is the photo as is to sony e mount?

A: Unfortunately this lens can not take a teleconverter so there is not an easy way to get more length out of this lens other than cropping.

Q: 3. Is this Nikon version an IF (internal focus) lens?

A: Just check the Samyang website: The Samyang 85mm is designed with internal focusing (IF) meaning the lens does not increase in size when focusing. A further positive aspect to internal focusing is that the lens is much less likely to get dust inside.

Q: 4. The length of the lens listed in the specs seems like it includes the hood. How long is the lens without the hood.

A: The dimensions (3.07 x 3.96" / 78 x 100.7 mm) of the Samyang MF 85mm f/1.4 WS Mk2 Lens for Sony E is without the hood.

Q: 5. Does it work with d5300?

A: Yes, the Samyang MF 85mm f/1.4 WS Mk2 Lens for Nikon F is compatible with the Nikon D5300.

Q: 6. I understand that this particular item comes with the chip for auto exposure, but is the chip already installed on the lens mount or do I have to mount it myself?

A: I'm using the lens on a 5300 which isn't a full frame camera there is no auto focus but there is an indicator light as part of the Nikon system that confirms focus. So as I'm currently using the lens it's a 135 excellent lens

Q: 7. Hi, I just ordered this lens upon seeing it but I can't find info about this anywhere other than B&H photo, not even on the Samyang site. Just wanted to make sure this is an actual product that will ship in 7-14 days like your website says. :)Thank you, Ali

A: Yes. The Samyang 85mm f/1.4 is a manual aperture/manual focus lens, designed to fit on the X-mount Fuji cameras. It is estimated to ship in 7-14 days, and you will receive a shipping confirmation and tracking number once it does.

Q: 8. Is the UMC version? What's the difference between Samyang version and Rokinon version?

A: Both the Samyang and Rokinon 85mm lenses will have a UMC coating. In terms of specs, build, and price, there is relatively no difference between the two models.

Q: 9. When Zachariah answered Matthew (the very first question), Zach didn't understand the question. Matthew is asking if the photos here at B&H are showing the actual version of the lens that mounts to E mount because an adapter is needed to mount DSLR lenses to Sony or the adapter is built-in to the lens such that a lens for Sony e-mount is longer than a lens for Nikon or Canon DSLR. Matthew is not asking about a teleconverter. Is the lens shown here at B&H actually the Sony E mount version? I don't see how that is possible. So is the 4" dimension listed in the specs for the Sony version or SLR version of the lens? B&H lists the length of the lens as 3.96" for both the Sony E mount and the Canon EF version, and I don't see how that is possible.

A: The lens shown is the Sony version, this lens will mount directly to any Sony E mount camera. This lens and the Canon are same size as well. The Canon option is the EF-M version which would be for the crop sensor Canon mirrorless, not any of the DSLRs.

Q: 10. Does the aperture ring click when adjusted?

A: Yes, though its not a particularly loud click.
