Taking design cues from their venerable CEM line of EQ mounts, the iOptron GEM45 Equatorial GoTo Mount strips out a lot of the bulk and retains the exceptional functionality to produce a highly portable and competent platform for astronomical observation and photography.

A precision synchronous belt transmission reduces vibration while improving tracking accuracy with a Permanent Periodic Error Correction (PPEC) system that makes the system more precise the more it is used and trained. The mount boasts a payload capacity of 45 pounds, without the included 11-pound counterweight, to handle most optical tube assemblies (OTAs) and accessories, including heavier photo rigs and filter wheels. iOptron's Universal Self-Centering Saddle (USCS) accepts both Losmandy and Vixen-style dovetail plates, so it can handle just about any configuration of optical tube and gear you have. This version of the GEM45 includes the motorized mount, the Go2Nova 8407+ computer hand controller, a iPolar electronic polar finder, the rock-steady LiteRoc stainless steel tripod, and a hard carrying case to safely transport and store the mount head and accessories like cables and the controller.

The center-balanced design of the mount head places most of the optical tube's weight over the mount's center of gravity, resulting in greater stability, smoother movement, and quieter running versus standard designs. An included 32-channel GPS receiver transmits accurate date, location, and time to the hand controller, so when you change your position, the telescope can be set up quickly with accurate information and little input from you.

The mount is controlled by the Go2Nova hand controller. This system has an internal database of over 212,000 celestial objects, multiple assisted alignment procedures, and updatable firmware through the built-in serial port. With nine slew speeds and automatic tracking capabilities, finding and keeping objects centered in the field of view is easy whether you're viewing the fast-moving moon or much slower deep-space subjects.

  • Synchronous belt transmission improves tracking accuracy, with reduced vibration, especially with heavy loads
  • RA and declination gear switches release the gears for balancing OTA
  • Precise 0.08 arcsec (200 pulse/sec) motor resolution
  • Low-power consumption: 0.6A (tracking), 0.9A (using GoTo)
  • Runs on included 12 VDC 5A power adapter; plugs into a standard 110-240 VAC North American outlet

  • 212,000+ object database includes the moon, sun, planets, stars, comets, asteroids, and constellations
  • Multiple assisted alignment procedures use the built-in GPS module and iPolar electronic polar finder
  • Slew speeds: 1x, 2x, 8x, 16x, 64x, 128x, 256x, 512x, MAX (4.5°/sec)
  • Permanent periodic error correction eliminates tracking errors for long-exposure astrophotography
  • Tracking rates: Sidereal, Lunar, Solar, King's, user-defined from 0.99x to 1.01x of Sidereal
  • Star Identification function will tell user what star the mount is pointed at after proper alignment
  • Computer control with planetarium software via integrated autoguiding port
  • Control for optional electronic focuser
  • Control optional illuminated polar scope light intensity

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can the Skywatcher AZ-EQ5 carry this OTA?

A: Yes this OTA will work on the Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 MULTI-PURPOSE GOTO MOUNT. The Load Capacity on the Mount is 30 lbs, and the OTA weigh's 27.5 lbs.

Q: 2. will this work with my sky-watcher classic 250p, the 10' dob?

A: Unfortunately due to the size of a Dobsonian telescope they cannot be supported by the Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro Equatorial GoTo Mount with Tripod Kit. No EQ mount will be compatible with a Dobsonian style telescope.

Q: 3. Is the iPolar required the laptop to be connected all the time? Or after the polar-align with the laptop, the laptop is not needed anymore?

A: Yes it is needed for alignment only and once aligned, a computer is no longer needed.

Q: 4. If Payload Capacity is 44 lb / 19.96 kg (without Counterweight) does that mean I can add to payload capacity by installing the counterweight?

A: So the Counterweight is meant for balancing, so it can move smoothly and track accurately without unwanted vibration or putting additional wear and tear on the motors. It does not add on extra Payload for more weight to the Mount/Tripod.

Q: 5. can I attach a Celestron Evolution 6" to this mount?

A: Yes, you can

Q: 6. is this a used telescope or brand new one?
