Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Just received this lens yesterday and seems the first few shots are underexposed nearly a full stop. Shooting in AV (8.0), Auto ISO and 400mm on Canon 5D III. Has anyone else experienced this under-exposure? Will do much more experimenting today.

A: I use the same settings on the same body and haven't seen this issue. Sometimes it looks underexposed in the viewfinder but turns out to be the viewfinder rather than the image itself - check the image on a computer too.

Q: 2. Would this lens work well with a canon T4i ?

A: Yes it does work with Canon T4i

Q: 3. How well does this lens work with shooting video? That is i want to also purchase the new 1Dx2 to use mainly for video production. Should i buy this telephoto or is there a better lens for video use? Thanks

A: I have used this for video - long range // I use the 70-200 more often

Q: 4. I have a Rebel T6 and my girlfriend a T5. Is the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS 2 USM Lens compatible with both bodies?

A: Yes! This lens will work on any Canon with an EF mount which includes the Rebel series. It is a teriffic lens, by the way.

Q: 5. Does this lens have internal focusing or does the lens barrel extend ?

A: It has internal focusing. The barrel only extends if you are zooming out.

Q: 6. It appears this lens comes in Canon's off white color finish but I was told it now comes in a gray tone similar to 17% gray card. Can anyone share with me what color the body of the lens truly is. Not that the color will prevent me from buying this lens.Next question are they made in the states or Japan?

A: It is off white. I don't think it is 17% gray. Also, the lens is made in Japan.

Q: 7. Is there any way to lock this lens (in the closed 100mm position) to avoid creep and wear during travel? Isn't this a necessary design oversight?

A: Yes. It can lock at any focal length.

Q: 8. Will the Canon 1.4x ii extender work as well as the Canon 1.4x iii with this lens? I have a 7D ii and am aware of the limitations with the 1.4x iii. Thank you.

A: Yes, both 1.4X II & III will work with this lens. Ver III is slightly faster to focus. Use the central point focus of the 7D MkII with the 1.4X.

Q: 9. Can the tripod bracket be securely attached to a Black Rapid strap?

A: Yes in the bottom of the caller there is a 1/4-20 screw and that's how you attach the strap to this lens

Q: 10. Is the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens compatable with EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters?

A: Yes, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens would be compatible for use with both the Canon Extender EF 1.4X III, B&H # CA14XEF3, and the Canon Extender EF 2X III, B&H # CA2XEF3. However, do note that while you should retain automatic metering and automatic exposure with both teleconverters with all Canon EOS DSLR cameras, it will depend on the model camera you own as to if you will retain automatic focus when using the teleconverters on the above lens.

Nature and Wildlife Photography (semi-pro) Super sharp and fast focus - Perfect for anything from bugs to large animals. Great carry around lens for wildlife photography. Wish it were a bit lighter in weight.

I've now had a chance to shoot a few hundred photos with this lens and it's really sharp. My previous zoom was the 70-200 2.8 which is a wonderful lens. This one is nearly as sharp so far as I can tell. However, due to the extra focal length care must be taken to hold it steady. A monopod is in order. Great for sports, wildlife. Gets up close for some candid portraits as well.

This is a big piece of equipment, but worth carrying. Coupled with the new 50 mPixel EOS 5 one can pick up details in a photo that would be hard to see with binoculars. I found a way to carry it, one shoulder strap across the body where it can be brought into use quickly, hanging from the slot at the end of the tripod adaptor. Trying to carry this by the camera strap didn't work at all. But a really clear telephoto.

I use to own the 70-200 2.8 and was going to upgrade to the MkII version of the same lens. Then I found the 100-400 MkII and read a few complete test reviews on the web. Well I can tell you I am very happy now. This may be in the top 5 of All Time Canon Lens. Fast focus and incredibly sharp. It's insane. Get it! You wont be sorry.

This lens takes beautiful, clear, sharp images when I can hold it steady. Which is my only problem these days. thinking about a mnopod for lens. but images are beautiful. Catching litle birds far away, nicely focused most of the time.

This lens replaces the 100400 I've had for eight years. I find the images to be sharper than from the old one. I normally shoot from a tripod, but have tried to hand-hold with the IS on and find it to be quite satisfactory for sharpness. The smoothness of the zoom and precise focal length I desire to use is much easier than the older version.

I really am happy with this lens, its super clear. you can crop even further and because the image is so clear the results are great. The focus is very accurate and its fast. You couldn't ask for anything more, its a little expensive but you get what you pay for.

I use this lens in still and video imaging. The improvement, especially at full zoom, over the version I of this lens, is incredible. There are times I forget I have this zoom mounted, instead of a prime lens. The revised rotating zoom instead of the push-pull, allows use of servo-motor zooming.

I purchased this lens to expand my telephoto coverage at a relatively low cost, providing the flexibility of focal length without the higher cost of multiple prime lenses. The 100-400mm range combined with the great amount of light available in the viewfinder complimented my other lenses in the lower ranges. The ability of this lens to accept an extender in the future allows further expansion. An unexpected benefit was the ability in the manual focus mode for my system to signal optimum focus, allowing a confirmation to what I can view. The lens is somewhat heavy, but well worth the extra weight.
