Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I'd like to hang it from my belt or drape it from a monopod. What cases or pouches will afford access to controls?

A: The Zoom PodTrak P4 Portable Multitrack Podcast Recorder is intended to be used while placed flat on a tabletop. The cases that we have are for storage. The audio bags that we have would not provide easy access to the controls while the P4 is in use. You could place it in a small audio bag like the ORCA OR-27 Small Sound Bag (B&H # OR27) which would provide exits for the microphone and headphone cable to pass through.

Q: 2. Does the Zoom PodTrak come with an SD card? If not, which SD card make and model do you recommend?

A: No, the PodTrak P4 does not include an SD card. We recommend SanDisk brand SD cards class 10 or higher.

Q: 3. My P4 isn't recording for longer than ~12 minutes, even though the display *showed* it had recorded for 45 minutes before I stopped recording. The first recording it just shut off at 12 minutes (figured batteries died). For the 2nd recording it was on an AC adapter and showed it had recorded the whole time, but the Mic1 and Mic2 files only have 12 min 30 sec of audio and the stereo file is empty. Has anyone encountered this issue?

A: Unfortunately it seems this uinit may be defective, I have not heard of this problem before.

Q: 4. I understand the advantage of having 4 individual outs for headphones, but does it have the ability to have all the recording channels go to only one headphone output? So one person can hear all participants?

A: Unfortunately not , that feature is not available.

Q: 5. Can I use this device to conect a camcorder or cell phone who use to record or stream a Podcast? Thanks

A: Yes, connections below: Host Connection 1 x USB Type-C (I/O) 1 x USB Type-C (Bus-Power Only) Connectivity Analog I/O 4 x XLR 3-Pin Female Balanced Mic Input 4 x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRS Female Unbalanced Headphone Output 1 x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRRS Female Unbalanced Aux Input 1 x 2.5 mm TRRS Female Unbalanced Remote Input

Q: 6. Can you record to the SD card and send a signal to a computer over USB at the same time? (To create a reference track in OBS; I'm finding OBS unreliable by itself and want a solid hardware solution).

A: Yes, it is possible to record audio to both the SD card as well as to your computer via USB at the same time using the PodTrack P4 or P8.

Q: 7. I'd like to couple this with an Ipad to record 3-4 mics while recording video on the Ipad. I have an adapter that allows external mic and power supply to connect through the Ipad lightining connector. Does this sound plausible, and if so, any watchouts?

A: In order to send an audio signal to an iPad, I would recommend to come out of one of the four headphone output's of the Zoom Pod Trak P4, with a Kopul ACDR-35 Line-to-Mic Attenuator Cable, BH #KOACDR35. This cable will bring the line level signal down to a mic level, which the iPad requires. Then you would need to adapt to TRRS with a Rode SC4 3.5mm TRS Female to 3.5mm Right-Angle TRRS Male Adapter Cable for Smartphones, BH #ROSC4, and finally the Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter, BH #APLAADAP to get into the lightning connection of the iPad.

Q: 8. Does the p4 record each track in a separate file?

A: The P4 records separate tracks (and a stereo mix) when recording to a SD card; if you are using it as an audio interface into a computer it only records in stereo on the computer.

Q: 9. Which AC power cable pairs with the Zoom PodTrak P4 Recorder?

A: The Zoom PodTrak P4 Portable Multitrack Podcast Recorder can be powered via AC with the implementation of the Zoom AD-17 AC Adapter (BH #ZOAD17) and a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable.

Q: 10. How does this compare to the H4N pro ?

A: The Zoom PodTrak P4 Portable Multitrack Podcast Recorder has a feature set that is ideal for portable podcasting. It has 4 microphone inputs and 4 individual headphone outputs where the Zoom H4n Pro has two microphone inputs and one headphone output. The H4n Pro has onboard microphones where the Podtrak P4 does not. The Podtrak P4 also has pads for triggering sound effects as well as the ability to loop in phone calls in several ways.
