This 3-stop, 77mm Wolverine Reverse-Graduated ND Filter with Magnetic Ring from Kase can be applied to darken bright skies, specifically during a sunrise or sunset, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. The filter achieves its effect with a 0.9 band of density above its center region, which provides up to a 3-stop reduction in light from entering a lens. This band extends in both vertical directions and tapers to approximately a 0.3 density and a 1-stop reduction in light at the edge above it. Directly below the 0.9 band of density, it tapers to clear, with a hard-edged line of transition before the clear area.

The placement of a 0.9 band of density with a clear area directly below allows this 77mm reverse-graduated ND 0.9 filter to match the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above, the horizon. In such instances, the sun can appear closer to the center of an image as opposed to the upper edge, and an increase in brightness is created that is more prominent on both sides of the sun than above it. This pattern of brightness corresponds to the density pattern on the filter design. The hard-edged line of transition in this reverse-graduated neutral density filter is useful for hard transitions between the sky and land, while the 3-stop to approximately 1-stop gradation is applicable to multiple regions of brightness within the sky.

This Kase reverse-graduated ND filter features SCHOTT B270 Superwhite glass for enhanced clarity and color fidelity. Each glass surface includes multiple layers of antireflective coatings to prevent internal ghosting and reflections. These coatings also offer greater protection to the filter substrate and help it stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters.

  • Wolverine magnetic adapter ring allows filters to be quickly interchanged and securely held in place
  • Effectively darkens bright skies, specifically during a sunrise or sunset, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image
  • 3-stop band of density tapers to approximately a 1-stop density at the edge above it, while directly above a clear area
  • Creates a neutral density pattern that matches the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above, the horizon
  • Density pattern corresponds to the brightness pattern of the sun when it appears at or is closer to the horizon as opposed to a higher angle, which creates an increase in brightness that is more prominent on both sides of the sun than above it
  • Hard-edged line of transition between the 3-stop band of density and the clear area below it is useful for hard transitions between the sky and land
  • 3-stop to approximately 1-stop gradation applicable to multiple regions of brightness within the sky
  • Filter does not affect the overall coloration of the image
  • SCHOTT B270 Superwhite glass for enhanced clarity and color fidelity
  • Multicoated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections
  • Scratch-resistant, mold-resistant, and hydrophobic coatings on each glass surface protect the filter substrate and result in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency
  • Aluminum alloy filter ring assembly is durable while remaining lightweight
  • Rotating design allows for gradation positioning along the horizon line
  • Plastic filter case for storage and transport

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the actuall height of the stand? Specs say 2.7m, but when covert inch to m, it only around 2.2m?

A: Sorry conversion incorrect 89 should be 226. cm or 2.26 m

Q: 2. Same quality than the Manfrotto 5001B Nano one? thank you

A: I have not compared them side by side but I can say that the light stand in question is very good quality.

Q: 3. Would this stand have trouble on grass, since the legs lie parallel to the ground? I wonder if it should stick to a stand with traditional tripod legs because they may grip the ground better on uneven terrain.

A: You can actually adjusted the legs however you want to. You can have the stand sit as a tripod, or lay all three legs flat.I've actually set the legs out as a tripod and pushed them into the ground to get a bit of extra support.

Q: 4. Will this work with Super 8 negative film? Or is it reversal only?

A: It is designed to work with positive (reversal) film. Keep in mind that it digitizes at a rate of about 2 frames per second. A 30 fps .mp4 file is created by it, so you must use software to adjust the 30 fps .mp4 file down to 18 fps for Super 8 and 16 fps for regular 8 film. If you digitize negative film, you will have to figure out how to invert the picture and do color balance to get the colors right.

Q: 5. Is this the correct reverse mount for the Lumix Vario G 1:3.5-5.6/14-42 mm MFT lens?

A: Yes this is the correct reverse mount ring to use with the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens.

Q: 6. Can the feet be adjusted to level it on uneven surfaces / rocky terrain?

A: The legs on the Matthews MERF Mini Extendable Reverse Stand move as one and are not adjustable separately to compensate for uneven terrain.

Q: 7. Is possible to get the Super 8 movie with audio using this Wolverine MovieMaker?

A: No, it does not record sound.

Q: 8. What is the actual footprint (circumfrence). of this light stand???

A: Footprint Radius 20 (leg support arms extended to be parallel to floor)) 35 from leg tip to leg tip

Q: 9. How many 50 reels of film can I expect this run before it fails?

A: The unit is warranted for 200 reels, so I would guess at least 200 reels. Time will tell.

Q: 10. How does this stand compare to the Matthews Reverse stand? I can see the MERF packs smaller, and the Reverse Stand holds a little more weight. Neither of those issues are deciding factors for me. Are there any other differences? I'm curious why people picked one over the other? I'm leaning towards getting the MERF because their max weights are so similar, but with the wider base it seems like the Reverse Stand should have more advantage than what the spec shows.

A: It's all about saving space for travel. If you're not worried about cramming into a roller bag for airplane travel, or attaching your stands to a backpack, then by all means buy another stand. I love the fact that I can strap mine to the outside of the case my LED panels travel in. Given the choice between the MERF and the regular reverse stand, I can't understand why anyone would buy the regular reverse stand because both stands have skinny reverse-folding legs. The regular reverse folding stand isn't offering much more weight carrying capacity. If you're concerned about weight capacity and stability more than you are concerned about collapsed size, then just buy a more traditional kit stand. The Matthews Medium Duty kit stand is in the same price range. If you really need extra weight capacity and stability, check out the Matthews Beefy Baby.
