Keep your hands and fingers warm and dry even in the harshest conditions with these Heat 3 Smart Mittens/Gloves, in tarmac green, from The Heat Company. When you're out in the cold, conserve heat by using the outer mitten, and then when you need to do some work, get a drink, snap a selfie, or perform any task that requires dexterity, just fold the mitten and thumb back to expose your liner-gloved fingers. The integrated inner lining allows full use of your hands, yet still helps keep your fingers warm.

Your first layer of protection from the elements is a wind- and water-resistant mitten shell with Primaloft Gold synthetic down insulation. The back of the mitten has a zippered pocket that can hold a disposable hand warmer, your car keys, a credit card, or cash. The palm is reinforced with soft and durable goatskin which is naturally water and wear resistant. Extra-long cuffs with drawstrings keep heat in and snow or wind out. When it's time to get to work, flaps on the fingers and thumb fold back and are held out of the way with simple magnets. Heat 3 Smart built-in glove liners are located beneath the flaps, featuring synthetic fabric that is breathable and wicks moisture away from your skin. Even when wet, the liner's insulation properties protect your fingertips from cold. For added usability the thumb, fore, and middle fingers have special material on the tips that allow you to use the touchscreen on your phone, camera, or sports watch.

Q: 1. Screw versus lever release - comparing durability, security, and ease of use. Wondering which bh-40 to get. I've only had lever release heads before and while theoretically they're quick release, I've had them "stick" on me. As I'm getting this head for my heaviest, most expensive gear, I'm in some ways more interested in what clamp style keeps that gear from falling OFF the head than in being able to get the gear off the head fast. Any thoughts from experienced users who have used both clamp types?

A: While I have only examined and not used these outstandingly designed and manufactured ball heads, the fact is I was a motion picture camera assistant who mounted $500,000 movie cameras in precarious positions, and therefore I do have an opinion. The knob/lever decision comes down to exactly the point you elucidate, to wit: security vs. convenience. If you require 100% security assurance, get the knob. If you can live with 99% assurance, get the lever.

Q: 2. Has anyone had specific experience using the Lever-Release on the BH-40 ballhead with Markins and Sunway L-brackets and Kirk replacement tripod foot for Canon 100-400? They work with my Markins Lever Release ballhead, and I'm now looking for an additional lever-release ballhead. RRS website says to use knob release for non-RRS plates. (Yes, I know B&H sells Markins ballheads, but apparently only the knob release, and not the lever release heads. Thanks in advance.

A: RRS as well as many other manufacturers use the Arca style system which is a standard and allows for interchangeability of brands.

Q: 3. I am really confused as to what is needed to use this ballhead. I just bought the tripod, about to purchase a ballhead_but it doesnt come with a camera mounting plate? I look for wat I think is a mounting plate to use with my R5 and I'm not sure what I am looking at and what I am looking for. Can't find anything on the website that resembles other sites for comparison. Help

A: RRS heads do not come with plates, and they primarily recommend dedicated plates that fit your camera exactly that work with the BH55, such as these ones: https://bhpho.to/2T8XHjW https://bhpho.to/3rNsilf

Q: 4. Will this work with Li-ion/IMR: 1. EBL 14500 2. Garberiel 18650 3.Ni MH AA Panasonic Eneloop Pro?

A: Yes. The following is Compatibility with all batts mentioned 1.2V Ni-Cd, Ni-MH: A, AA, AAA, AAAA, C, D, Sub-C (SC) 3.6V/3.7V Li-ion/IMR/INR/ICR: 10340, 10350, 10440, 10500 (R25), 12500, 12340, 12650, 13450, 13500, 13650, 14350, 14430, 14500, 14650, 16340, 16500, 16650, 17350, 17500, 17650, 17670, 18350, 18490, 18500, 18650, 18700, 20700, 21700, 22500, 22650, 25500, 26500, 26650, 32650

Q: 5. Can the head be changed ?

A: Unfortunately, the JOBY RangePod Smart Tripod does not offer a removable head.

Q: 6. Will this work with a Kirk bracket?

A: Affirmative, the Kirk Replacement Foot on my, Nikon 70-200 f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens works perfectly on my, RRS BH-40 Ball Head with Full-Size Lever-Release Clamp. The clamping pressure and fit is same as the, RRS LCF-15 Foot for my, Nikon 200 f/2 VRII Lens. And consistent with the, RRS BD5-L: L Plate on my, Nikon D5.

Q: 7. If I order the RRS l-bracket, will I need to order a quick release plate as well, or does the l-bracket take the place of the QR plate?

A: You do not need to order the plate, the bracket has the plate built in.

Q: 8. Mainly taking it for backpacking. Does it support d850 and 14-24/70-200 lens along with RRS 1 series tripod.

A: Yes, it will work fine with your gear. Good little ball head with good load capacity.

Q: 9. Does the lever in the lever release clamp have a safety switch so that I won't accidentally flip it open...??

A: I have read the other responses and agree with them all. Now for an engineering answer. The lever uses a design called an offset cam. The first 10-15 degrees of rotation require a lot of force. After that it becomes continually easier as the cam rotates increasing the lever arm length and the mechanical advantage. This feedback works in reverse when you close the head with the last few degrees of rotation being very hard. You know that the camera is locked without looking.

Q: 10. I just bought 1 and received it today, I absolutely love it. My question is that I find the lever clamp stiff and hard to close after I install a plate, I put such much force that I have to hold the entire unit firmly or tighten the pan dial till it stops turning, is that normal?

A: Yes, you are correct, basically all arca compatible plates vary in width by mm's, just enough to cause an issue. RRS plates or brackets are best to be used in RRS heads or ones that specifically say compatible with RRS.
