Belying its compact profile, Vocas MB-455 4 Stage Clip-On Matte Box allows you to stack up to four filters, with two rotating filter stages that accept filters up 5.65 x 5.65" in size in a clip-on matte box. The non-rotating filter stage accepts a single filter up to 4 x 5.65" and a compartment in the front of the hood accepts a 4 x 5.65" filter, optional hard matte, or an optional 4 x 5.65" tilted filter frame. Two internal adjustable integrated eyebrows protect your lens from flares alleviating the need for external mattes.

The MB-455 can clamp directly onto lenses with a maximum front side diameter of 143mm and to lenses with smaller diameters via optional step-down adapters. The included top flag (eyebrow) attaches to a lockable hinge along the top of the matte box for precise glare control and similar hinges for optional side flags are built into each side of the matte box hood. An optional swing away bracket can be mounted to the matte box, which makes it quick and easy to change lenses, as you just swing the matte box away and swap lenses, without having to worry about where to put the matte box during the lens exchange.

Please note, it is recommended that this matte box be used with lenses which have fronts that do not rotate when changing focus or zoom. A: This matte box will work with any 4 x 5.65" sized filter. The standard for such a filter is 4mm thick.

A: Yes. I use it with Zacuto's Universal Baseplate and it works great. If you're using shorter lenses, such as CP.2s, CN-Es, Xeens or Rokinon Cine DSs, you may need to buy some shorter 3.5 15mm rods so that you can lower the bottom of the matte box below the rods. This allows you to center the matte box on the lens. I use this setup with a URSA Mini 4.6k, but if you are using a taller camera such as a RED, which has a higher lens mount, you may be OK.

Q: 3. How much vertical adjustment is the matte box capable of? I wanted to use a Hoodman HLVKIT Live View Kit with my D810, which will slightly raise the camera height.

A: According to Cavision this matte box set should have no problem covering the extra height created by the HLVKIT on the D810. It has approximately 2.4cm of height adjustment. The minimum distance from rods center to matte box (ie lens) center is 10.2mm and the maximum is 12.6mm. Also of note: the plate portion at the back of the rods system will elevate the camera approximately 4.2cm above the rods center.

Q: 4. If I buy this along with the Lamparte DSLR Starter Rig B&H # LABSK01, do I need to also buy 2 short rods for the front to mount the matte box?

A: You should be able to get away without it., Unless you are using a really long lens. You will have to adjust the camera to connect to the the matte box. I don't have the extension and it works fine for me with a GH4.

A: That is correct, this system is 15mm LWS.

Q: 7. Is this also compatible with the Panasonic AG-UX180 camera?

A: We do not recommend this system for a Camcorder the size of the UX180. This system is designed to work with DSLR cameras and lenses, which may have a smaller outer diameter. While the lens on the UX180 does not have a large filter thread, the outer diameter of it is what you need to watch out for. A: Currently, there are no add-on filter stages available for this matte box. Thus it can only take two 4x4 filters at one time. The trays themselves may be available from the manufacturer though they are not listed.

Q: 9. Does this have a holder for 4x4” filters?

A: Although the UMB-1 trays are designed for 4x5.65 filters, they will hold 4x4 filters as well, though they will not be matted on the sides. They should cover the viewing area of all but the very widest lenses.

A: The bellows ring included in this kit integrates a 138mm slot for round polarizers. If you are mounting the diopter directly to your lens, you may then use the appropriate clamp-on ring that accommodates the front diameter of the lens.
