Available as an electronic download, Audio Modeling SWAM Flutes is a virtual instrument plug-in developed to deliver versatile timbres, expressivity, and convincing realism for composers, producers, and performers in multiple genres. It uses a combination of modeling and sampling technologies to provide complex articulation while imposing a low load on your system resources.

SWAM Flutes offers extensive real-time parameters such as growl, flutter tongue, breath noise, and overblow, which can be adjusted via external MIDI controllers or your DAW. It also features a built-in mixer with reverb and pan controls for enhancing the sound. SWAM Flutes is compatible with macOS and Windows systems and supports AAX, Audio Units, VST, and VST3 plug-in formats.

SWAM Flutes, like all SWAM Engine digitally handcrafted acoustic instruments, are never a simple recording of notes via sample libraries, but rather a set of real virtual instruments based on their traditional counterparts, allowing you to fully control the expression of any virtual acoustic instrument.

SWAM Flutes illustrates how the concept of articulation can be overcome. The physics of the instrument demonstrates that the main expressive elements of the instrument (like expression, vibrato, and flutter tongue) depend on a single factor, the dynamics of the breath.

Choose SWAM Flutes for composing, producing, or performing any musical genre by layering it in sections with no artifacts and simply selecting different timbres for each instance. From jazz to classical, from country to pop music, just adjust any sound and behavioral parameter to get the exact response you want.

Control the following parameters in real time via MIDI controllers or your DAW:

  • Expression (dynamic)
  • Note transitions (staccato/legato/portamento) with no key switches
  • Legato mode (glissando vs expressive)
  • Vibrato depth
  • Vibrato rate
  • Portamento time
  • Harmonic structure
  • Sub-harmonics
  • Growl
  • Flutter tongue
  • Formant
  • Breath noise
  • Key noise
  • Dynamic pitch
  • Overblow
  • Microtuning
  • Main volume
  • Pan pot
  • Reverb mix

Tired of giga-sized libraries of prerecorded flutes and the limitations of traditional samplers? SWAM Flutes is the solution. It was developed by Audio Modeling using SWAM Technology (Synchronous Waves Acoustic Modeling) through a combination of innovative performance techniques and concepts of physical and behavioral modeling with the multivector phase-synchronous sampling technique.

Real-time controllable via MIDI controllers, SWAM Flutes requires only the smallest footprint to create the perfect organic consistency resulting from the endless expressive parameters that are unique of every live performance.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the sync voltage to trigger this flash?

A: I plug the SF-ABRL into the wall socket which is 110 volts. I use a transmitter and receiver set up on the hot shoe of my Nikon. The receiver is connected on my main light. I set the SF-ABRL to receive the flash output from the main light. The sync voltage at this point, after receiving the flash, and setting off the flash of the SF-ABRL would need to be pretty miniscule as it is only a triggering device to make the unit flash, as the flash itself is powered by the 110 volt electric current. I do not know the sync voltage that triggers the switch to fire the flash as it is all electronic, but I'm sure you could find out by calling the manufacturer.

Q: 2. How long is the PC Sync Cord that comes with it?

A: Around 10ft.

Q: 3. What are the specs on the flash tube? I need a replacement.

A: You will need to contact their service Dept and set up a repair as the tube is not field replaceable. It was pretty inexpensive to get fixed, around $20 if I recall.

Q: 4. Will this work with the impact 28 beauty dish?

A: I too don't have any direct experience with that piece. Maybe contact the manufacturer?

Q: 5. Does anyone know what the Guide Number for this unit is? It is not listed in the specs on this page.

A: Guide numbers are measurements of light, measuring the intensity of light from a single flash falling on a subject, and is usually used for hot shoe strobes or flashes built into cameras. Watt-seconds is a measurement of energy, measuring the amount of energy stored and released by the strobe. There is no simple conversion from one source to the other, as the units are not measuring the same thing. Also, guide numbers measured from the same strobe can change, depending on the reflector used or the spread of light (which is why the same strobe with a guide number measurement at a wider focal length will be lower than the exact same strobes guide number measured at a longer telephoto focal length). Watt-second measurements (the amount of energy the strobes capacitors can hold) remain consistent, regardless of the reflector used on the strobe. All that being said, with the caveat that there is no real correlation between guide numbers and watt-seconds, a rough conversion would be a 160 watt studio strobe would roughly equal a guide number of 51 in meters and 167 in feet when using a reflector with a 35mm light spread.

Q: 6. What is the recycle time of this flash after a full power pop?

A: I've been using this flash since September 2022 and for just over two years, it worked really well, with a really quick recycle time. Now it takes a good 10 seconds or so.

Q: 7. Can I use this for my Bowens 400 strobes?

A: If it will screw in it should work. It worked on my SB 400

Q: 8. what is the purpose/benefit of having the the modeling light with the strobe?

A: Strobes are great for lighting a subject with a good white-balance that continuous lighting will provide, but with a little more difficulty. Continuous lights give you What You See Is What You Get images, which can work for what you're going for, but a strobe helps make the light source a primary source for you camera to use for white balance and exposure in general. Technology exists where you can get continuous lights to be powerful enough to light up the environment as you like, strobes help when you need a powerful light source working on top of natural light in the ambience.

Q: 9. What's the power source?

A: Plugs right into the electrical outlet in the wall. 120 volt, 60 cycle AC. No batteries to run down or replace. Works great!

Q: 10. Does this work with the Impact Umbrella Flash Kit? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1262483-REG/impact_umbrella_flash_kit.html

A: You can use the stand and umbrella in that kit with the SF-ABRL160.
