The CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 with EF mount from Canon is designed to combine the functionality and form factor of a broadcast, ENG-style-servo zoom lens with the optical precision of a cinema zoom. The lens is designed for use on cinema cameras with Super 35 sized sensors and is suitable for 4K acquisition. With a detachable drive mechanism and support for rod attachment, it is designed to be equally at home whether being used by a solo camera operator or a full production team. The lens features a 20x optical zoom and a focal length range of 50 to 1000mm with a maximum T stop of 5.0 at the wide end. The lens features a built-in 1.5x extender providing a 75 to 1500mm zoom range, capable of supporting 4K resolution.

The lens features 180° of focus rotation for precise focus pulls and is marked in both feet and meters. The detachable drive unit, can be removed and reattached with the zoom in nay position, requiring no re-calibration. It also supports motorized zoom speeds ranging from 1.5 seconds to 180 seconds to zoom throughout the entire range. The zoom control includes a mini-LCD that displays zoom, focus, and iris setting. The lens mount supports electronic signal pass through, supporting EOS lens data management functions. The built-in, 12-pin connector allows you to interface this lens with standard broadcast connectors. The 11-blade iris creates circular out of focus highlights and a natural looking Bokeh.

The lens features a 20x zoom range of 50 to 1000mm, which is very long for a lens that supports the Super35 format. A built-in 1.5x extender allows you to increase the zoom range to 75 to 1500mm while still supporting 4K resolution.

The lens features the form factor and control layout of typical ENG lenses and is designed to be friendly for a single camera operator to control while using the camera shoulder mounted. The zoom servo is controlled by rocker with the right hand and focus and iris can be operated manually with the left hand

High speed servo-driven zoom and iris is available for critical situations such as while filming sports or fast action. Meanwhile, slower speed settings are available for more expressive work. With this variability, the zoom duration can be set to last anywhere from 1.5 to 180 seconds

The drive unit features a high-performance encoder so that the lens requires no initialization. This means the system can be used immediately without any delay waiting for it to boot up

Via three 20-pin connectors below the servo, it is possible to connect an external system to collect 16-bit virtual image data

The lens features the same 12-pin camera interface for power and serial data as found on regular Canon broadcast lenses

In addition to servo zoom, focus, and iris, another ENG-derived feature is the knurled focus ring, which is limited to a 180° rotation

The flange back may be adjusted in the same manner as on broadcast lenses to simplify the transition between different camera systems with different flange focal distances

The iris may be closed fully for setting camera black balance or other calibration procedures

The motor unit housing the servo motors and zoom rocker may be removed for cinema style shooting where full manual control is preferred

The lens provides a sufficiently large image circle to cover a Super 35mm sensor

The lens is compatible with a wide array of accessories common in the cine industry, including matte boxes, follow focuses, and electronic and wireless controllers. The focus ring features both a 0.8mm MOD cine standard gear ring as well as a 0.5 Canon MOD ring, the zoom features a 0.5 Canon MOD, and there is also a 0.5 MOD iris gear

Because of the weight of the lens, it is often deemed helpful or necessary to support the lens using a 19mm rod system. This lens makes that possible by allowing you to attach a lens support

The lens communicates directly with Cinema EOS camera through the lens interface. This allows lens metadata such as zoom setting and iris to recorded in the camera. Note that a firmware update may be required for proper communications between the lens and the camera.

In addition, the lens features a standard 12-pin broadcast camera interface and can also transmit zoom, focus, and iris data to a camera or other device via this connection

The lens mount can be swapped between PL and Canon EF only by an authorized Canon service Facility.

The lens features 11 aperture blades to make lens flares and orbs caused by the bokeh effect as close to round as possible. With fewer blades, it is often possible to see the geometric shape of the aperture. Additionally, using an odd number of blades helps prevent diffraction effects that can cause pin-points of light to produce an unwanted "staring" effect

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you use this without the electronic drive? As in, remove it and manually focus / zoom the lens?

A: Yes, you can remove the motor if you wish to work without it.

Q: 2. Can I use an LMB 4x5 Mattebox with the 136mm Clamp Adapter, or does this lens require a 6x6 Mattebox? Any vignetting with 4x5?

A: The Canon CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 with PL Mount can be used with a 136mm clamp on matte box. It does not require a 6.6 x 6.6 matte box. There will be no vignetting with 4 x 5.6" filters.

Q: 3. Will this cover a full-frame sensor with the extender enabled?

A: No this will NOT cover a Full frame sensor, Even with the extender the image circle is only optimized for S35

Q: 4. Would this lens work with a metabones adaptor attached to a Blackmagic Design Studio 4k camera?

A: The pairing will work as long as you power the lens.

Q: 5. Is this lens really 1000mm focal length, given its phisical size (40cm) long?

A: Yes, this lens really does have a 1000mm focal length.

Q: 6. What excuse do you suggest me to tell my wife about buying this lens?

A: Depending upon the type of relationship you have and your level of comfort, promising her a new summer home might get you the go-ahead... but usually, if one has the necessity for such lens, then one probably has the adequate, projected returns to justify the purchase. You can also tell her that it captures vivid color better than a BMW automobile.

Q: 7. Does the maximum T-stop switch to 8.9 when you use the extender, or is it progressive with increased focal length?

A: You can find this information on Page E24 of the user manual which we have listed on our website. When the 1.5x extender is on the Maximum T-Stop goes from T7.5 at the wide end and T13.35 at the telephoto end. https://bhpho.to/2puDCW1

Q: 8. Looking to buy both this and a RED camera. Do the Cine Servo lenses work with an 8k sensor or does it top out at 4k?

A: In general the lens will resolve well past 12K but as far as sensor coverage goes, I would recommend checking a sensor coverage chart for the lens. This being a telephoto lens, our suspicion is that it'll cover the sensor.

Q: 9. Would this be compatible with the Red V-Raptor with an RF-EF adaptor? If not, can you recommend a servo zoom for the Raptor?

A: You can use the CINE-SERVO 25-250mm lens with the RED Raptor in the 6K mode.

Q: 10. How would this lens be powered with a Red V-Raptor?

A: You could power the Canon CINE-SERVO 25-250mm T2.95 Cinema Zoom Lens from a d-tap source using the IDX System Technology C-ZLPRO D-Tap to Hirose Cable for Canon CINE-SERVO Zoom Lenses, (BH #IDCZLPRO). See: https://bhpho.to/36Nlahv

Just back from a month in Africa and first use with this lens. Canon created an incredible tool for wildlife video. Paired this with the C300MkII.
While autofocus is missing everything else is there for me. Tack shape 4K video captured directly onto CFast cards in the C300MkII meant less gear to drag along.
I occasionally used the built in extender to go to 1500mm. While tack sharp mid day shots were affected by heat waves... great for effects but not so good for capture.
While this lens is not fast (T5) I found low light captures on the C300MKII very acceptable at higher ISOs.
In short, this compact lens is fantastic. Thank you Canon.

We paired this lens with the C200 for our church livestream services, it has taken the image to a whole new level. It is sharp, clear, and it produces a good image.

Wonderful lens for the Blackmagic URSA Mini G2! Can control focus, iris and zoom using LANC thru the lens mount or ATEM software. Only bummer is the T4.4...would have been better with 2.8...but fantastic lens nonetheless.

This lens had been purchased to be used with a Canon C300 Mk III. It is sharp, renders beautifully and is relatively lightweight for a zoom of this magnitude. The accompanying grip, however, represents a terrible mismatch for the C300 with its own grip attached, as they come so physically close as to make either one unusable. I have removed the lens grip and have placed it back into the box that it had arrived in and I suspect that it will never see the light of day. It really is a shame, since the lens grip allows for modulated zooms that excel when compared to the controls mounted on the lens itself. In summary, I would give 5 stars for the lens, and and 0 for the grip.

I have read several reviews that have taken issue with this lens being labeled as a 'cine' lens. The reviewers had not been specific about their complaints, but I have found the lens to be a much sharper renderer than its non servo, EF equivalent which I do own. With a 3rd party zoom rocker it functions smoothly. That said, when combined with a Canon C300 Mk III, its C-AF is somewhat slow, but accurate. The OIS, on the other hand, functions beautifully.

This lens had been purchased for a Canon C300 MK III, and it did not disappoint. It is sharp, contrasty and quick to focus in AF mode. My only complaint relates to the included zoom rocker grip. If this lens is to be used with the aforementioned cine camera, the grip will physically impede the use of the camera's own grip and it will have to be removed. I've replaced the zoom rocker grip with a 3rd party zoom control that completely solves the problem.

This lens is a lot sharper than the 70-200mm f2.8 L. A true 4k lens.

I know a lot of people are down on this lens because it is slow but I love it! It is parfocal so when I zoom in and focus and zoom back out, it stays in focus. The photography lenses would drive me crazy, not holding focus. Is also a very nice zoom lens.
