Popular for portraiture, the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S from Nikon is a short-telephoto prime characterized by its flattering focal length and bright f/1.8 design. The maximum aperture strikes a balance between size, weight, and speed, offering suitable speed for working in difficult lighting yet remaining sleek enough for handheld use. In terms of optics, two extra-low dispersion elements are featured, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve high clarity and color fidelity. Also, both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are used to suppress flare and ghosting for greater color fidelity and higher contrast.

Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Prime portrait-length lens is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.

Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus.

Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.

A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing performance. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus qualities, that are well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this lens work on the D3500?

A: Yes, it is compatible but, you have a cropped sensor camera and the crop factor of your camera will give you a field of view similar to a 127mm.

Q: 2. Does this lens have a plastic or metal mount?

A: Metal mount.

Q: 3. Will this work with a D3100?

A: Hello, All Nikon lenses work on all Nikon DSLRs from 3000-5000-7000 range in APS-C and FF. All company lenses on most cameras: Canon, Sony, Fuji, work on all cameras from the same model typs. They all copied from NIKON many years ago, Canon with the EOS name Fuji with the X name... Etc, Look around and ask your dealer. HUH?

Q: 4. What does the G mean in the model number for the NikonAF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens?

A: A Nikkor lens with a G simply means it doesn't have an aperture ring on the lens itself and has instead been designed to have the aperture set by the camera's command dial.

Q: 5. I have a Nikon D5200, which is a cropped lens, and I'm looking for a lens for portraits. Should I be getting this 85mm lens or a 50mm lens?

A: With the 1.5 crop factor, I would go with a 50mm lens. I found the 85mm to be too much, especially for indoor portraits.

Q: 6. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D500?

A: Yes.

Q: 7. Does this lens works with D700 FX camera ?

A: Yes, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens is fully compatible with the Nikon D700 DSLR Camera.

Q: 8. Using the FTZ adapter on the Z6, would this perform similar to a 105mm for macro work?

A: The minimum focusing distance of this lens is 2.62 feet, which is well above a macro lens such as the Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens at a 1 ft focusing distance. Unfortunately, the FTZ adapter would not shorten the focusing distance of any lens placed on it.

Q: 9. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D300 camera?

A: The Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G lens is fully compatible with any Nikon DSLR, including the Nikon D300.

Q: 10. Anybody have chromatic aberration issues / how is the contrast and flair - I am hesitant to get this lens since it doesnt have the nanocoat?

A: I'm not a pixel-peeper but this lens has performed beautifully for portraits on my D750. I highly recommend it. The color rendition, contrast, bokeh, and price point have been perfect for me.

I shoot mostly events. I bought this lens right before I had to cover an engagement party in a dark bar and this lens was the perfect tool for a small crowded dark space. I used it at f1.8 nearly the whole night - amazing. It's much easier to balance on-camera flash with dim available light with a large aperture lens because shutter speeds don't have to be so long. I was at 1/40 @ f1.8 @ ISO 4000 most of the night. I almost got the 14-30mm f4, but happy I chose this 20mm instead.

AT f/1.8 it is very sharp at center. Sharpness drops just a little at the corners. Stopping it down to f/2.8 improve center sharpness. At f/4 it has perfect sharpness corner to corner.

Turning in-camera corrections off, there is a moderate amount of vignetting and barrel distortion which improves a bit at f/2.8 and remains the same after that.

Here are a few points to consider:
Focusing ring is very smooth. It is focus-by-wire and not mechanically coupled with the optical elements. So, no focus distance marking on the lens.
Auto focus is fast and responsive even at low light
Screw-on filters can mounted in front of the lens (77mm)
Focus breathing is very small
Good flair control
Coma is very small at the corners, good for Astro photography
Excellent sharpness across the image
No image stabilization on the lens

Overall, highly recommended

Wavered over whether to buy the new (z mount) fast Nikon wide zoom or get 1 or 2 wide primes. Had the previous (f mount) zoom for several years and didn't use it much. Primes generally produce at least slightly better quality imaging. My fast z 24-70 covers the 24mm I used most in film days and still like. Zooms are more convenient, fewer lens changes, less chance for dust invasion. Primes aren't generally as weighty as zooms. This is a big lens but very manageable and handles well. It turns out beautiful colors and the sharpness is borderline astounding, especially stopped down a notch or two. Adding this lens to my bunch is the result of when the wavering stopped.

Nikon's Nikkor Z 20mm f/1.8 S Lens will be my go to lens in astro photography; waiting for a moonless night to give this lens a chance to show what it is capable of in the astro photography world. Love the lens for its potential in landscape work. The 20mm f/1.8 S lens does an exceptional job in photographing the interior of the home. As always, thanks to B&H for providing great products and service.

Got this for night photography. Nice that it's not too gigantic or heavy. The focal length and aperture are what I'm after. I haven't shot with it yet, but I'm sure the image quality will be fine considering all the rave reviews it gets in that department. I like the immediate service from B&H and the tax credit from their Payboo card:-) I normally add a magnetic filter adapter to my lenses for ease of switching to a polarizer or ND filter, but for this lens I only plan night photos and I'll just leave the UV filter on for protection. Nice that B&H gives us this UV filter as a free add-on, too.

This lens is fast, sharp and just plain nice! It's a little larger than I would expect for a 20mm lens but overall, no complaints.
