  • Thanks to its six transparent, low-noise mic preamps with selectable phantom power, the LiveTrak L-8 can accommodate dynamic or condenser microphones for you and multiple guests.
  • Just insert an SDHC or SDXC card to start recording right away. Keep in mind that you can multitrack record via USB to a computer or iOS mobile device (separately available Apple Camera Connection Kit required) whether or not you track to an SD card.
  • No matter which media you choose, the L-8 records separate tracks to ensure flexibility in post-production processes such as editing and mixing.

  • Use sound effects and music clips to add excitement to your podcast. The LiveTrak L-8 features six assignable sound pads that allow you to instantly trigger effects, music, applause, prerecorded interviews, or ads.
  • The LiveTrak L-8 comes with 13 preset sounds for its sound pads, making it ready for out-of-the-box production.

  • The LiveTrak L-8's phone tap lets you easily interview a guest who is calling in remotely on the phone or via common apps like Skype and FaceTime.
  • Simply connect your mobile device to the 3.5mm TRRS port using the supplied TRRS cable (some iOS devices may require a Lightning to headphone jack adapter), and the L-8 utilizes a mix-minus function to ensure that the caller won't hear their own voice echoing back to them.

  • The host and each guest in your podcast should clearly hear the content of your production. The L-8 offers four 1/4" stereo headphone outputs with independent level controls and mix selectors.
  • The main headphone output is sourced from the master output while the three other headphone outs can be assigned to the master mix or an independent cue mix.
  • Connect the balanced XLR stereo master outputs to a pair of active speakers for convenient monitoring.

  • You can easily record song demos and live performances with multiple musicians using the LiveTrak L-8.
  • The first two channels of the L-8 support 1/4" Hi-Z inputs for direct connection of instruments such as a guitar and bass.
  • Channels 7-8 feature 1/4" line inputs, which can be used to plug in a drum machine or stereo keyboard.
  • Utilize the remaining inputs (channels 3-6) for mics on sources such as vocals and drums.
  • The four 1/4" headphone outputs allow you to create custom mixes for each musician.

  • Conveniently run the L-8 in remote locations via four AA batteries—up to 2 hours via alkaline batteries, up to 3.5 hours via 1900 mAh NiMH batteries, or up to 6.5 hours via lithium batteries (batteries available separately).
  • A USB cable and the Zoom AD-17 USB-to-AC adapter are included for powering the L-8 from an AC outlet.
  • Alternatively, you can power the L-8 via a USB battery or power bank.
  • The L-8's USB connection is designed to eliminate accidental interruptions, giving you power on which you can rely.

  • Set your levels, dial in the mix, then save your settings in one of the L-8's seven scene presets.
  • Recall a scene at the push of a button to instantly reconfigure the L-8.
  • Create different scenes for common scenarios such as podcasting, live streaming, band rehearsals, and more.

  • The L-8 records up to 10 discrete tracks and a stereo mix directly to an SD card at up to 24-bit / 96 kHz.
  • Use the L-8 as a 12-input / 4-output audio interface with your computer or iOS mobile device via USB at up to 24-bit / 48 kHz.
  • Punch record and overdub at any time for more complex productions.
  • Optimize the sound of your tracks via onboard effects and each channel's 3-band EQ and low-cut filter (effects, EQ, and overdub functions are unavailable at 96 kHz).

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this have timecode function for sync with multi-cam filming? I get asked enough to do pop-up live event podcast, with filming, that I considering an item like this.

A: Using a simple clapstick, we have had no problem syncing Zoom trax to picture - for up to 2 hours continuous. What is important is that the NLE must understand and correct/compensate the audio sample rate when ingesting the trax. Whether you choose to sample at 44.1KHz or 48KHz, there is a slight difference in the audio sample rate for true 30fps and one for NTSC 29.97fps. That tiny difference can produce sync drift overtime. Our NLE software applies this correction automatically.

Q: 2. Android phone attached to the mix-minus. usb-c adapter to trrs?

A: You can use a basic adapter like the Comica Audio CVM-SPX-UC 3.5mm TRRS Female to USB Type-C Audio-Interface Cable for Android (B&H # COCVMSPXUC) to connect your Android phone to the mix-minus TRRS input. The L8 comes with a TRRS cable to use together with the USB-C adapter.

Q: 3. Would I need mic activator for Shure am 58 or Shure sm7b?

A: You would not require a mic preamp for the SM7B. You should be able to get decent levels from about 75% of the way, on upwards. If you want a hotter gain signal below that mark then a preamp like the CL-1 would be recommended.

Q: 4. What can be said about the clock accuracy on this unit? I own a Zoom R16 and have also worked with output from their other recorders. Loading to my NLE, there is always large drift over an hour recording (e.g. a full second+) I'm hoping this is better?

A: Thank you for your question. I spoke with Zoom directly and they do not have a measurement for clocking accuracy but they did say that the improvements over the R16 are vast and you should not have any noticeable drift

Q: 5. Does this have a built-in per-line limiter or compressor?

A: That is a mistake on Zoom's part. 4 Mic Inputs, each with dedicated compression, would have been preferable the 6 without, at this price point. Any time a human voice (speaking or singing) gets in front of a microphone, it's a good idea to have a dynamics "babysitter" in the signal path.

Q: 6. Does phantom power apply to the TRS portion of the combo jacks, or just the XLR portion?

A: The Zoom LiveTrak L-8 can only supply phantom power via XLR. 1/4" TRS devices connected to its combo jacks will not receive phantom power.

Q: 7. I have the Zoom L-8. Connected to my computer via USB; cell phone connected to L-8's 1/8" TRRS jack using the supplied cable. The manual says the caller will hear the master mix, but the caller is not hearing the master mix; they're hearing me (via mic plugged into one of the six mic/line inputs) but NOT the audio coming from my computer (YouTube playback for testing). I'm hearing it on my headphones (master mix) but the caller is not hearing the full master mix. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is the manual incorrect? (It says you can't use the Line In for channel 7 when using phone, but says nothing about USB in--and I CAN hear the USB in in the master mix). Thanks.

A: The audio also needs to be connected to the L8 in one of the mic inputs which are audio line inputs if no mic is being utilize. if you have the caller connected to line 7/8 mini jack dont connect nothing there only phone. its best to have a second device playing the audio connected to the L8

Q: 8. Can I connect my studio monitors from the xlr outputs to the trs balanced cable?

A: If your active studio monitors have a 1/4-inch TRS balanced input, you can use cables such as these: Pearstone PM Series 1/4" TRS Male to XLR Female Professional Interconnect Cable (10'), BH #PEPMTRSXF10.

Q: 9. Using this as an audio interface with StreamYard and Skype... guests hear an echo on theor end, but don't hear one from me. I don't hear the echo live, but do in recording. Any ideas? Using a MacBook Pro. Mic plugged into Input 1. Computer plugged into Input 7 (USB 1-2).

A: You will not be able to easily configure a mix minus to send via USB.

Q: 10. Does this have the same incompatibility issue with AMD processors as the L-12?

A: As stated in the specifications section of the L-12 page on our website, operation is not guaranteed with CPUs from Atom, Celeron or Pentium series or CPUs made by AMD.
