Ideal for portraiture, the EF 135mm f/2L USM is a medium telephoto prime and a member of Canon's L-series of lenses. The long focal length coupled with the f/2 maximum aperture afford a great deal of control over depth of field for isolating subject matter and using selective focus, and the bright aperture also benefits shooting handheld in low-light conditions. In regard to the optical design, the lens uses two ultra-low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for high clarity, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy. Complementing the imaging attributes, a ring-type USM is employed to deliver quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control.

Medium-length telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 216mm equivalent focal length.

Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords significant control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.

Two ultra-low dispersion (UD) elements greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.

Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an rear focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is dust and moisture-resistant for working in inclement environmental conditions.

Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I use this on my eos 5 d?

A: EF-S lenses are not compatible with full frame Canon cameras.

Q: 2. Why would you use an extender for this lense (Canon ef 135 f/2L usm)?

A: If you are referring to an extension tube, one would use an extension tube with the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM lens if they were trying to capture macro images or focus closer on a subject than the lens' minimum focus distance will allow by itself. If you are referring to a teleconverter, one would use a teleconverter to increase the lens' apparent focal length or reach. A 1.4x teleconverter would give the lens an equivalent 189mm f/2.8 lens appearance; a 2x teleconverter would give the lens an equivalent 270mm f/4 lens appearance.

Q: 3. is the is this a USA version?

A: This is the version made for sale in the USA but it is manufactured in Taiwan.

Q: 4. I'm confused by a drop in filter. What is this? Is there a filter that matches besides a polarizing filter? That's the only one I see listed. Do I need to buy the drop in kit?

A: A lens like this does not have filter threads but does have an opening towards the back of the lens for a drop in filter. It comes with a holder for gelatin filters and it needs to be in the Lens at all times with or with you a gelatin filter.Canon makes a polarizing filter that fits without the included holder, http://bhpho.to/1dQ7bPyAnd they also make a holder that accepts most 52mm filters, http://bhpho.to/1dbubff . This is an example of some ND filters that are 52mm, http://bhpho.to/1dbwIpB

Q: 5. Have Canon said whether this'll be compatible with dual pixel face detection?

A: Yes, this lens will be compatible with dual pixel face detection.

Q: 6. I have canon 1300d and lences 55-250 .I want bigger lence for wildlife photography. pls suggest lence with low budget

A: Tamron 150-600

Q: 7. I've just purchased this Canon EF135mm F/2L USM and no regrets. However, I purchased this primarily for portraits as was my use back in the days of film, but I'm reading on this site and others that the new choice is the way-pricey 85mm L Lens. I've the Canon 5D Mark IV (Full frame), so I'm a happy clam, I'd just like THIS groups thoughts on 135 mm vs. 85 mm for most portraits ????

A: 135mm and 85mm are both great options when it comes to shooting portraits. If you have the distance between you and the subject, I do like the 135mm for full-length portraits and such. Both are great, and there isn't a wrong answer, if 135mm is what you're comfortable with, then stick with it.

Q: 8. I have 200 mm f/2L is usm lens. I need a lens cap for it. The cover it comes with me is awkward to have. Is there a cap that I can buy? I know it is a large lens - but I need a cap for it.

A: Yes: Try Amazon www amazon com/Don-Zeck-Lens-Cap-Lenses/dp/B002YRZLBA

Q: 9. I mostly hand hold the camera. Can this lens work on the auto function and is it clear being hand held? I own the Mark lll

A: There is no issue with using the Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM lens on either the Canon EOS 1D Mark III or the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (you did not indicate which Mark III DSLR camera you own, but it works with both cameras), and can be used in Program Automatic mode and will autofocus on both cameras. While the lens does have Image Stabilization and allows you to shoot four (4) f-stops slower than with a 200mm lens without the IS motor, the lens is quite heavy, so it would depend on how naturally steady you are as to how clear the images will be (though they will be clearer when using the IS feature).

Q: 10. Would this lens work on a Canon 50D?

A: The Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens is compatible with the Canon 50D.

I honesty can say that this lens blows away most of my other L lens, outside of the 85 MM which is such a special piece of glass. I find that most every shot taken with the 135 is a keeper. Contrast and Color are second to none. This lens is sharper than any other lens I own and IMHO is the sharpest lens in the Canon lineup. I love this lens and use it for indoor theatrical productions and sporting events where flash is prohibited. Put on a 1.4 extender and you still have a long telephoto lens at f2.8!

It also makes a wonderful portrait lens on a FF camera.

Fast focus, accurate focus, excellent sharpness. This may be the sharpest lens I have possessed. Excellent value for the money.

Professional use on a 5D. As with all Canon L series lenses, the glass is perfect. I also use the 16-35mm f2.8L and the 24-70mm f2.8L zooms. The 135mm f.2L prime lens just looks a bit sharper than the zooms. They are all great though. Auto Focus is extremely fast & quiet. Very happy with this purchase from B&H.

This is a great lens but you better be in a big area. because the lens is already zoom out to135MM,

with the135mm 2/f you can get a nice blurred background. Profession looking photos even on a crop frame like the xti i got .

OH THANK Y`ALL ON TOP FOR THE REVIIEW ON THIS LENS

This lens has made me fall in love with the beauty of prime lenses. It's tack sharp at 2.0 and the background blur is just simply superb. This lens is perfect for portraits but I think it really shines in Indoor Sports and Concerts. This lens will give you the speed you need to stop the action and not have to bump the ISO to the max. Also, when combined with the 1.4x extender, you get an awesome and equally sharp 189mm 2.8 lens! This is a must have if you're serious about photography. Don't bother with the 70-200 2.8 IS as it is way too expensive and not as sharp as the 135mm. Just buy this lens along with a 1.4x extender and you'll get a much better and more versatile setup. Lastly, this lens won't attract as much attention as the huge and heavy 70-200 lenses. It is easier to carry and much more discreet.

I bought this lens for portrait photography, for which it is great, I have a 50mm, 85mm,and 100mm, and this is by far my favorite lens especially where light is not by design. Its quick, the auto focus is really quick and quiet, and its incredible sharp. This is by far the first lens I go too. The bokeh is beautiful. I can imagine this would be a wedding photographers dream. I love this lens and really I can't say enough good things about it. You will never regret this purchase

Like almost everyone else, I agree this lens is stunning - especially for the money. I think the build is disappointing, but the optics quality is what should be key - and it's awesome.

One of Canon's magic lenses. Very fast, very sharp and beautiful color. Great value for the money, especially in comparison with many of the other prime L series lenses.

I use it for studio portraits. It's by far the sharpest lens I have ever had (including other L). In a 5DII at f/2.0 is really excellent, starting from f/2.8 it outresolves the camera sensor. Colors, bokeh, contrast, AF accuracy, speed are great, no cons at all.
