Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. how much watt usage for this card?

A: I do not know the answer to that question, as I have an 1150 watt power supply, and simply never was concerned.

Q: 2. We can see USB 3.0 in the specs, but USB 3.1 on the pic. What is real?

A: USB 3.0 was renamed to USB 3.1. They are the same speed.

Q: 3. Will this card work on PCI Express 1.0?

A: You can but it is not recommended as there may be a performance hit.

Q: 4. Will the hard drives in this enclosure spin down on idle?

A: In almost every case yes, they will spin down.

Q: 5. Are the drives hot swappable?

A: The OWC Mercury Elite Pro is a RAID enclosure, so the drives are not hot-swappable within a RAID array. Any blank drive inserted will need to be rebuilt into the array.

Q: 6. Will this card work under Yosemite? on a Mac Pro 5,1 running Yosemite?

A: I've been running this card for months on the came config (Mac Pro 5,1) and it's awesome -- a great way to help extend the life of your Mac. Go to the company website and make sure you're running the latest firmware and drivers. If you're still using the stock ATI graphics card, consider replacing it with the EVGA Nvidia GTX-680 (Mac edition). -- I did. Also consider more RAM. I added 32 GB.

Q: 7. Can you place the enclosure on its side during operation? Or must it be standing upright?

A: You can use the OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual 2-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 2 RAID Enclosure with 3-Port Hub BH #OWCMEDCH7T00 on its side.

Q: 8. Would this work on an Xserve 2,1?

A: not sure - sorry -the only problem I have it doesn't power every external usb 3.0 or 2.0 bus powered drive. media transfer stops half way through. I find that the new thunderbolt bus powered external drives with 3.0 connections do transfer media fine.

Q: 9. Do the four ports share a 5 Gb/s bandwidth, so the more devices you connect, the slower each runs? Or, does each port have a dedicated 5 Gb/s bandwidth?

A: They do not share a 5 Gb/s bandwidth. Each port has a dedicated 5 Gb/s bandwidth.

Q: 10. do need power supply with this card?

A: No, the Sonnet USB3-4PM-E Allegro 4-Port USB 3.2 Gen 1 PCI Express Card BH #SOUSB34PME gets power from the PCIe slot.
