A long-reaching telephoto zoom characterized by a sophisticated optical design and advanced image stabilization technologies, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens is part of the esteemed L-series developed for full-frame EOS DSLRs. One fluorite element and one Super UD element have been incorporated into the lens' construction, and both help to reduce aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to deliver notable clarity, image sharpness, and faithful color reproduction. An Air Sphere Coating has also been applied to lens elements in order to reduce lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich imagery. Benefitting the optical components of the lens, a four-stop effective Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake and can be dedicated to different styles of shooting. Furthermore, a redeveloped rotation-type zoom ring pairs with an internal focusing mechanism, and an Ultrasonic Motor, to deliver quick and intuitive handling to benefit handheld shooting. Positioned as a versatile option for sports and wildlife photographers, this lens' list of attributes make it a viable telephoto zoom for a variety of shooting applications.
Housed within a weather-resistant barrel, this lens also features fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements for protection against fingerprints and smudges from affecting image quality. Zoom control is complemented by a dedicated tension ring for adjusting zoom torque. Additionally, other refined design elements include a tripod collar that can be attached or detached with the lens mounted to the camera and an included lens hood that permits easy control over specialty filters with the hood in place.

Telephoto zoom is compatible with full-frame EF-mount DSLRs, as well as APS-C-format models where it provides a 160-640mm equivalent focal length range.
One fluorite element and one Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element help to correct chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilization modes are available—Standard, Panning, and During Exposure Only—and can be selectively employed to suit a variety of types of shooting.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
The rotation-type zoom ring offers precise adjustment between zoom positions, especially when shooting handheld, and a zoom torque adjustment ring enables easy setting of the zoom tension for personalized control.
A weather-resistant design protects the lens from dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
A redeveloped tripod collar can be attached or detached from the lens without having to remove the lens from the camera.
The included ET-83D lens hood incorporates a side window for easier adjustment of rotating filters with the hood in place.

Q: 1. if you can only afford one or the other, which would you advise getting--the 70-200 2.8 IS with an extender--or this one? I do birds and wildlife, but equally important are portraits and landscapes.
A: I've never used a 70-200 2.8 IS, so I'm not going to be much help from that standpoint. The 100-400 will focus down to 3.5 feet which I really like plus you can put a 77mm Canon 500D closeup filter on and it gets you even closer. I have it on a 7D MKII and the lens focuses great...I could use more practice in framing birds in flight. The 100-400 would be a few hundred dollars less than the 70-200 plus extender. Be sure the extender will auto focus the lens so you are not a manual focus only lens. The one thing that comes to mind about the 70-200 2.8 is the 2.8 which would be great for handheld portraits/candid shots in natural lighting situations.
Q: 2. One reviewer mentions ...Recently I have started using it on a monopod. The new tripod foot works loose and negates the stability. When tightened it gets loose again. Why would Canon design a brilliant lens and then weaken the whole thing with this flaw? For over 2 grand it bugs me to have to buy a replacement foot for this lens..... Has Canon improved the tripod foot design to avoid this issue or do you need to purchase an alternative tripod foot to prevent the issue? I am asking because I would want to use this lens with a monopod for some of the wildlife photography I like to do.
A: Canon has improved the tripod foot on this lens, which now allows the ability to remove it without having to remove the lens.
Q: 3. I have a Canon 1DMk4 and a Canon 100-400 Series ONE lens, a combo I use all the time for bird photography. I would like an opinion on how well my 1DMk4 combined with this Series TWO 100-400 would perform in comparison?
A: The newer lens has a rotating zoom as rather than a push pull zoom which might take some getting used to. When I shoot birds they are stationary not in flight. So, I'm zoomed to the max and am only concerned with focus. I use mine on a 7D which makes the max 640. The IS works good hand held. You might think about renting one for a weekend before spending your hard earned money. Looks like the new designs are moving away from push pull lenses though, so this might be your only option for a new 100-400.
Q: 4. Will this lens work with my Canon EOS 5D Mark ii?
A: Yes.
Q: 5. Will this fit a Canon 700D?
A: 700D is known as the Canon EOS Rebel T5i in the USA. It has an EF mount and so does this lens. It should fit.
Q: 6. Will this lens work with Canon Rebel T1i?
A: Hi, the Canon 100-400 lens is designed for Full Frame cameras. This lens can still be mounted onto your Canon T1i which has an EF-S mount.
Q: 7. I shoot high school football games and use the 70-200. I'm primarily interested if anyone has used both of these for this purpose? Pros / cons? Thanks.
A: I have also shot many h.s. football games, and the 70-200 is my choice. Rarely do I need the 400mm range, but I am shooting from the sidelines. If you are in the stands, the 100-400 would be better.
Q: 8. If anyone has purchased this lens recently, has Canon changed from wrapping the fabric lens case in plastic to not doing so? I know they used to but maybe they don't anymore. Just want to make sure mine is ok and not opened or returned. Thanks!
A: The fabric lens case is not always wrapped in plastic in the box of the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens.
Q: 9. Can the Canon 100-400 lens replace my Canon 70-200 f/4 lens? I use Canon 5DIII
A: Short answer is yes, the 100-400 could replace the 70-200. Long answer depends on your intended use, how much weight you want to carry, etc.. I am using the 100-400 on my 5Diii to shoot soccer from the field level along the sidelines. The 100 gets me as wide as I need to be about 95% of the time.
Q: 10. The B&H video eludes to EF-S usage; specs indicate EF only. Can it be used with EF-S? Thanks.
A: Yes it can be used on all Canon DSLR's. However, on a crop sensor camera the focal range will be 160-640mm.
