    Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this umbrella fit on my Profoto B1x?

A: Yes this will work with a B1X.

Q: 2. How does a medium silver Profoto umbrella differ from a small silver Profoto umbrella? (I'm shooting headshots)

A: One of them is bigger than the other. s=33 m=41

Q: 3. How long is the 41" folded? I can only fit 27" in my bag.

A: This Profoto umbrella is 33" when folded.

Q: 4. What is the folded size of this umbrella?

A: The folded size of the Profoto 41" Deep Medium Umbrella is about 33".

Q: 5. Is this heat resistant for 1000w tungsten lights?

A: Unfortunately, this umbrella would not be rated for use with 1000 watt tungsten lights.

Q: 6. Hi, Profoto certainly makes outstanding lighting gear but do you think their umbrellas are worth the extra cost? Is there a visual difference? How much of a difference is there between the deep and shallow Profoto umbrellas? Thanks. Paul

A: I thought that there would be no difference before I bought one, but now after using the Deep Umbrella a couple of times, I feel that it is worth the price. The light output is nice and even, with some drop off as opposed to a normal umbrella that spreads light everywhere. Plus, I have found that the deep umbrella tends to be easier to control the direction of the light since it reflects from the inside of the umbrella instead of through it, like a normal umbrella. Finally, the construction is top-notch and the fiberglass rods inside seem much more durable that the other umbrellas I already have. The outer layer is much thicker and the steel rod is rigid. Because of the heavier duty construction the unit weights a little more than a normal umbrella, but it's not that noticeable. Paired with my B1, this is a great modifier for me on the go, rather than using a Softbox that requires me assemble it. This deep umbrella pops open and attaches in seconds.

Q: 7. Could someone please tell me the BH product number for the diffuser that matches this umbrella?

    A: B&H # PRDUM

Q: 8. Is the Medium big enough for standing full length portraits without too much fall off?

A: A Profoto Deep Medium Umbrella can cover a full length portrait without too much fall off depending on the positioning.

Q: 9. What is the front to back depth of this when it is open?

    A: It is 15 deep.

Q: 10. can this umbrella be used with speed lights for example the? Nikon SB910

A: Any umbrella like this can be used with Speedlights with an umbrella mount. (You have to buy an umbrella mount for Speedlights) the difference between this umbrella and cheaper umbrellas are strong build quality and a deeper profile to help focus the light forward a bit more than a traditional shallower umbrella.

This is a stunningly expensive translucent umbrella ... but I've grown sick of crap products failing on me ... like bent rods or torn fabric after any prolonged use. Failure is a costly factor.

So, I'm giving these a try ... and I must say the level of design, build quality and materials is what you'd expect from Profoto ... It's handling any pro spec gear ... it just feels right.

The proof will be apparent after some good use ... although I suspect more care will be exercised when handling these beautiful umbrellas given their cost ... LOL!

This product is solid! I have a less expensive 65 version of another brand and the center rod is not as sturdy as the Profoto ones. The 41 is perfect for headshots with the diffusion. If the other brand breaks easier, I'm switching to all Profoto Umbrellas!

Profoto makes some of the best umbrellas and this doesn't disappoint. Excellent build quality and produces a beautiful light. I use this with a Profoto B1 and B2 and like how I can adjust the spread of light by sliding the B1/B2 head along the shaft. I use this with and without the optional diffuser. Great for location shooting as long as it's not too windy outside.

This deep umbrellas are fabulous. They focus the light in a very beautiful way. It wraps around the subjects body creating a nice highlight in the center and shadow around the edges. I highly recommend it. I use it for fashion and it's been fantastic!

Best umbrella to get. I use this on Profoto B1 and B2 heads. Beautiful light, well made, and I like the adjustable quality of light produced by sliding the B1/B2 on the umbrella shaft.

Because I do a broad range of on site photography I recently purchased a set of umbrellas in various sizes made by Profoto. Though I had not used any of their products the reviews looked good but I was skeptical about the higher cost. I sometimes shoot in small locations with wood stained walls which are not desirable to bounce flash from so I started with the 33 inch white. These umbrellas were so much better made than anything that I had previously used that I decided to try replacing an old set of soft boxes with another set of Profoto's larger silver deep dish with diffusers. I now have two small white 33 deep dish, one medium silver 41 deep dish w/diffuser panel and one large silver 51 w/diffuser panel to cover various size sets and they are much more durable, better constructed and offer a nice reflection of light. The deep dish design allows for better control of light and feathering and add the diffuser to silver umbrella for an alternative to soft boxes with much quicker and easier set up/tear down and compact portability. I have used all of these umbrellas in my studio with good results and plan to carry them for on location photography. Both the umbrellas and the diffuser panels come in their own pre-labeled, individual durable protective cases and can be easily packed into your light stand case. Pricey but worth the $$.

The Profoto Deep Umbrellas are very well made and durable light shapers. These are designed to attach to the Profoto moonlight head using the interference fit provided for the umbrella shaft. The spacing between the umbrella end and moonlight is adjustable providing the ability to alter the light shape. The silver umbrella provides a harder light and is particularly useful for edgy masculine portraits or Hollywood glamour shots. The umbrella comes with a sleeve to keep it clean during transport and storage.
