A: Canon assumes that you are using select Canon macro lenses for macro photography. The ring flash uses a proprietary grip ring mount that is built into the MP-E 65 mm macro lens with a 67 mm adapter available for the EF100 mm macro lenses, or lenses with a 67 mm filter mount. The typical usable range is about 0.79 in to 16 ft with the guide number of 24.6 at f2.8 with ISO 100. This information is available in the flash User's Guide. Obviously using higher ISO settings will give a greater working distance. The low power of this flash unit in comparison to a higher end speedlites with a guide number greater than 100 might make this flash unit unsuitable for sports action shots. Electronic flash is suitable for sports photography only when the light output is high enough to allow a shutter speed and f-stop combination that largely eliminates exposure from the ambient light of the scene, unless the flash is being used only for fill and therefore closely matches the ambient light level.
