Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Past Nikon Coolpix cameras suffered from bad/slow focus in low light condition. Are there any test on that with P1000?

A: Initial reports say that the AF is good for a super zoom for most instances including sports. Low light and small objects may cause hunting. Once in hand, we all shall see.

Q: 2. Does the EVF (viewfinder) function in video mode?

A: This is not a DSLR so yes the EVF and the rear screen work alternatively at all times.

Q: 3. Can the P1000 back button focus?

A: Back button focus is not possible on the P1000.

Q: 4. Why are the specs grayed out? How could anyone preorder until we know what they are? I'm kinda enthusiastic about this camera. It remains to be seen.

A: Check now 7/10 (0945PST), they are not grayed out now

Q: 5. How granular are the on-board audio controls? Can AGC be turned off? Is the input smart enough for using external mic sources without interfering with the external gear's audio quality?

A: While this camera has big lens capabilities, its audio should be considered entry level. Since we do not have access to sufficient information, we can only offer the opinion that probably you will be able to turn AGC off. As to the mic input being smart enough, we are of the thought that the pre-amp circuitry is entry level and if you wish discerning audio, we recommend a separate, and quality, audio recorder.

Q: 6. Are there other lenses or can I use my DX lenses.

A: You can not change the lens on this camera. It is fixed.

Q: 7. Which one is better: photo taken at 3000 zoom with this P1000 or 600 zoom expanded to 3000 digitally with sony RX 10 IV ???

A: The Nikon COOLPIX P1000 Digital Camera has the smaller 1/3 16MP sensor with a significantly longer lens than the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 IV Digital Camera with its larger 1 20MP. We would be of the opinion that the image quality of the same subject, same distance, same final size would be comparable. In other words, most viewers with not see a difference. However, only testing and personal taste can confirm this. We would suggest basing your choice on what feature is more important: The P1000's longer reach or the RX10's slightly better low light ability and image quality.

Q: 8. Is it weatherized?

A: No, the following camera does not offer any weather sealing.

Q: 9. Touchscreen?

A: no touchscreen on the Nikon P1000

Q: 10. In manual mode does the ISO default to a set number once exposure time is greater than 1 second?

A: We are not sure of the behavior of the P1000 since it is not out yet and we do not have access to enough information at this time. Going off the P900 however, we see that in manual mode, when set to Auto or Fixed range auto, the ISO sensitivity is fixed at ISO 100. This appears to apply to anything regarding exposure time.
