Taping the viewfinder with gaffer's tape is not the most elegant solution and certainly nowhere near as preferable as a viewfinder eyepiece made of rubber or other soft polymer.

A: It's a hard, but smooth, plastic. I don't use glasses except for reading. I put my reading glasses on and put them next to the viewfinder. I don't think it would scratch glasses, but can't be sure if you use the viewfinder a lot.
