Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. My TVS-872XT (RAID 6) gets around 600MB/s write and 900MB/s read via 10GBe. Would expanding capacity with this slow it down?

A: The QNAP TR-004 4-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 1 RAID Expansion Enclosure, B&H # QNTR004US, has USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 3.0 5Gbps), so the speeds are going to be limited to 5Gbps (540MB/s).

Q: 2. I can not get this thing to mount. It doesn't appear in the Disk Utility. It the QNAP software kind find it. It keeps spooling up and shutting down repeatedly. I'll get "Disc Not Ejected properly" messages. What's with it?

A: Please reach out to pc@bhphotovideo.com so we can help you troubleshoot, we would really need more information to try to give you a solution.

Q: 3. Can I use the TR-004 as a DAS without RAID configuration, load disks already formatted for Mac with data on them and remove a disk for used on an external dock? I'd like to remove disks for my off-site backup purposes.

A: Yes, however the preformatted drives would be reformatted again to JBOD. Each time you would also have to power down the device to make modifications.

Q: 4. Can I use this for SSD cache? For example 2HDs in Raid 1 in the host and one SSD as cache in the tr-004

A: No, the QNAP TR-004 4-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 1 RAID Expansion Enclosure can not work as cache.

Q: 5. Can I use the TR-004 as a backup drive for my Synology DS920+ via USB?

A: The QNAP TR-004 would not be compatible with the Synology DS920+.

Q: 6. With 16TB and 18TB drives now on or coming to market, will 4 of these work in this enclosure?

A: At the time of this message, the QNAP TR-004 4-Bay USB 3.0 RAID Expansion Enclosure BH #QNTR004US supports up to 16TB drives. Unless something drastically changes with 18TB drives, they should work but I couldn't guarantee it until QNAP has tested them and adds them to the drive validation list.

Q: 7. Do I need to use identical drives? (Currently using an ailing Drobo with all different drives)

A: The RAID mode used for the QNAP TR-004 4-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 1 RAID Expansion Enclosure BH #QNTR004US will determine the effects using different sized drives. In most cases using different sized drives will result in the capacities being based off the smallest drive in the array.

Q: 8. Can I use 4 different/Same HDDs' without any RAID Formation? Will they show up in windows explorer? what is the largest volume(size in TB) of a single HDD is supported in any of these 4 trays?

A: Currently each bay can support a 14TB disk. You do not have to set this up as a RAID. If you set this up as JBOD, each drive will be read as its own individual volume and you can use different size drives. Please be sure to check Qnap's website for compatible drives.

Q: 9. What is the maximum hard drive capacity this Raid enclosure will support?

A: The highest capacity drive verified as compatible with the QNAP TR-002 2-Bay USB 3.1 GEN 2 RAID Expansion Enclosure is the WD 22TB Ultrastar 7200 rpm SATA 3.5" Internal Data Center HDD, B&H # WE0F48155.

Q: 10. what is the maximum storage (TB) it supports?

A: Up to 16TB per bay, below the recommended HDD list https://www.qnap.com/en-us/compatibility/?model=388&category=1
