A: If the main stream is 4k over SDI the output of the converter will be setup to what the receiver, lcd or recorder wants. As long as the recorder is setup to receive and communicate to the converter it wants 4k that’s what will be available.

Q: 2. How far can I send the SDI signal ? I need to send an HD signal with audio to a conference room and then decode again to a video projector. Any suggestions on the cheapest way to do this with reliability?

A: This totally depends on your cable. We use Canare RG59 HD-SDI coax cable and our longest run is about 200 feet. I use these Blackmagic design boxes in different parts of the building and they work great. There was one that I had to update the firmware, but that was very easy. These are great, reliable products.

Q: 3. Will this encoder pass DCI 4K60p?

Any good quality SDI cable with full size BNC connectors will be fine for carrying the SDI signal as long as it's rated for the combination of format and distance you need, most of the quality cable manufacturers have tables available that show the maximum distance each cable will reliably carry the format you are intending to use. B&H stock a great selection of cables and their experts are really knowledgable (as well as friendly!) so I'm sure they will help you choose a suitable one if you can let them know the format you are sending (for example: 720p25, 1080p60) and also the length of cable you need. A: Use mine 12 hours a day for weeks at a time. Heat is insignificant. I have 4 units.

A: No, the Mini Converters don't have a power button. You would either need to disconnect it from the power source to turn it off, or connect the power supply to a power switch to easily turn it on and off.

Q: 8. does it convert 1080p to 4k?

A: No, this device does not convert 1080P to 4K.....4K is 4 times the resolution of 1080P (think 4 1080P signals combined). This device takes a video signal on an HDMI cable and converts it to an SDI cable. Why convert to an SDI cable? Because SDI cables can carry a video signal MUCH further than an HDMI cable can a video signal. What kind of input signals can this device handle and convert to SDI? It can handle video resolutions of 4K, 1080P and lower. But all it s does is convert the input signal from HDMI cable to SDI cable, it does not change the input resolution.....what goes in is what goes out....just over a different kind of cable that can handle longer distances than HDMI can handle. If you want to convert a signal from one resolution to another.....like 1080P to 4K or the reverse 4K to 1080P then you need a video scalar like this product from B and H......SC-HDM-HD42K 2-Port HDMI 4K Scaler from Avenview.
