Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How badly does the umbrella shaft interfere with the thumbscrews?

A: I have never found that to be a problem...

Q: 2. Is this sturdy enough for a 7'-0 umbrella?

A: Yes, you may use a 7-foot umbrella with the Photoflex Dual Shoe Flash Adapter Kit. It is a heavy duty mount. I would recommend to ensure the light stand you use has a maximum load capacity that may handle the combined weight of the umbrella and flashes used on the bracket; the light stand's load capacity would be the determining factor for your needs.

Q: 3. For recording, is the HDMI output 4:2:2 10bit? And, does the viewfinder have diopter adjustment?

A: JVC lists 4:2:2 only in the HD format for the GY-HM170. The viewfinder has a diopter adjustment. They call it a visibility adjustment lever.

Q: 4. Remote LANC speed changes in slow zoom. This is a disaster for many applications. Is there a software upgrade to fix?

A: While we are not aware of any specific firmware update that addresses zoom control, you can find the latest firmware for the HM170U on JVC Pro's website. If you need help finding that feel free to email us directly at ask@bandh.com.

Q: 5. Is this Camera capable of recording in both NTSC and PAL?There seems to be 2 versions of the camera ending in E and U I assume EU and USA versions but the specs imply the camera can record in both formats?

A: According to the manual, it can do PAL and NTSC. I would judge the E and U label as to what the plug is on the charger.

Q: 6. Does this camera do date/time stamp for doing legal video/depositions?

A: Yes, this camera does time/date for legal video.

Q: 7. Will this fit on a DJI Ronin-M? It would be close and would depend on where the center of gravity point is for the camera.

A: The JVC HM170UA is a bit too long to be properly balanced on the Ronin-M. The camera is almost a foot long and the maximum depth at center mass on the camera base plate is 4.7 with the Ronin-M. A camera of this size would work better on a more traditional stabilizer system, such as the Steadicam Solo with Arm and Vest Kit.

Q: 8. What is the weight of this camera including battery?

A: According to JVC, the GY-HM170 with battery weighs approximately 2.4 lbs/1.11 kg.

Q: 9. If the camera were to run out of battery (or get unplugged) would the video recorded be lost?

A: The video recorded on the SD card will not be lost if the camera loses power. This is the same for all video camera's.

Q: 10. Does this Pearstone Canon Mini Advanced Shoe to Standard Cold Shoe Adapter, B&H # PECSAIII fit my Canon Vixia HF S20?

A: Yes, the Pearstone Canon Mini Advanced Shoe to Standard Cold Shoe Adapter would be compatible with the Canon Vixia HF S20.
