Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does this compare with other similar Dollys such as the ProAim Polaris and the Dutti Dolly?

A: The Dana Dolly Portable Dolly System Rental Kit with Universal Track End is really seen as an industry standard as Dana Dolly has been producing this style of dolly since the 1980's.

Q: 2. Are there any portable stands this boom can work with? All the recommended ones seem to be very heavy and not for on location shooting. Thanks.

A: I would not recommend it. This is designed to be a long lasting inside boom and stand. The boom arm is not light and if you put it on an aluminium stand, my guess is the stand would bend. I would suggest finding an aluminium stand and boom arm.

Q: 3. I want to mount it to two regular Matthews C-stands. Do I need an adapter?

A: The Dana Dolly Portable Dolly System with Universal Track Ends (B&H# DADDUK1) comes with two Universal Track Ends and a Center Support which may be installed on 5/8" male spigots (A.K.A. baby pins) or into 1 1/8" receivers (A.K.A. junior receivers), both being common connectors on the tops of many light stands. For example, the Matthews Century C Stand with Mini Base, Black - 5.25' (1.6m) (B&H# MALSC20MBB) or Matthews Mini Slider Stand (38") (B&H# MALSMS) may be used for that purpose. Please keep the weight limits of any stand used in mind, and use a sandbag with the stand whenever appropriate.

Q: 4. Can I put a jib on this dolly system? Like a Kessler Crane Pocket Jib PRO?

A: There are options available for you to mount a small jib to the Dana dolly but you're going to run into some obstacles. The Dana dolly will support 100 pounds so you'll have to make sure your overall weight doesn't exceed that. Also, balance will be an issue so you'll have to make sure you have a person available to standby and support the rig. Personally, there are better options. But if you want to attach a small jib to the Dana dolly you can get a half-ball adapter to fit any 3/8 tripod or jib head to the dolly. I recommend Manfrotto's half-ball adapter with the short handle.

Q: 5. Does this come with a mounting accessory to be able to attach a tripod/fluid Benro Head?

A: The Dana Dolly Portable Dolly System Rental Kit with Universal Track Ends comes with bowl adapters for the following size tripod head bowls: 75mm, 100mm, 150mm. If your tripod head has a bowl with one of these sizes, it should mount appropriately. Otherwise, you may need a bowl for your head, such as the Benro 75mm Half Ball Adapter BH #BEBL75S https://bhpho.to/3JHWjMV

Q: 6. Which stand best suits the avenger 600 b

A: This is a good boom, I like it a lot, good quality and heavy-duty (which you wouldn't guess from the name mini ). Due to limited space in my studio, my favorite stand by far is Photogenic PHTA34MS58 8' Light Stand with 19 Caster Base. Works great with this boom. The caster base is heavy, the wheels roll very smoothly, and the small footprint is wonderful, so much nicer in the studio than the typical tripod light stands (been there done that, I replaced them all with these 19 caster base Photogenic stands).

Q: 7. How much weight can this arm support at its minimum extension?

A: I typically use this boom with Bowens monolights and anything up to a 40x60 softbox, which combo weighs around 12 lbs. I would typically have between 4 and 5 feet boom length from the fulcrum point to the head (implying around 20 - 30 of extension of the internal bar), with around 18 counterbalancing length on the other end and between 20 - 25 lbs hanging from the hook (I would use an Impact CT40 MB turtle stand or similar for the base). There's almost no deflection in the boom in those circumstances and the whole rig is rock solid. I would fairly confidently suggest that with less extension than I use, the fulcrum point more centered and with similar counterbalancing weights, you shouldn't have any problems. The rig will manage higher weight with ease - it's a very solid boom

Q: 8. Is it worth paying extra for the universal track ends instead of the original ?

A: As a long time movie professional, I can tell you Murphy's law applies to what happens on set. If you are in a controlled set up and you know for a fact what size of speed rail you always will be using, do save your money and get the original style. However, if you are working freelance, and someone else will be supplying the speed rail, save your self the grief of failure on set because the ends you have don't fit and you can't shoot. Get the universal. They are worth the piece of mind in that situation.

Q: 9. Do I need anything additional to allow boom to swivel/raise/lower on my stand? I saw one comment saying you needed to buy a grip head...

A: Nope...it has it's open 5/8 receiver. So as long as you have a sturdy C-stand, you're good to go. A drop pin adds some extra versatility and Safety cables are always advised. Both are cheap add-ons.

Q: 10. What would be the recommended mount if I wanted to attach a Ronin 2 to the Dana dolly

A: You will need a Mitchell Mount.
