Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. People are writing about friction and noise problems with the lens. Has Sony reported any thing or has B&H inquired to Sony.

A: There are no advisories from Sony in regards to friction or noise problems on this lens at this time.

Q: 2. I was wondering if this Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Lens besides using it as a portrait lens. How would it be to use this lens for street photography? Thank You!

A: This Sony fe 85 1.4 GM Provides outstanding color and its also very sharp if you get it to focus. But its a moody lens, difficult and slow to focus in low light and on moving objects, and it does not focus close up. It also looks huge on your camera, and weighs a lot, so not stealthy. Ive used the Sony fe Zeiss 35 2.8 and it is great, tiny, light, and focuses great, nice color, sharp, no weight. For travel I now use the Sony fe 24-240 which is really a great lens, much better than all the reviews, its sharp, color and focus are good and it is useful at all distances. Do I need to tweak my fotos a bit more in Lightroom with this 24-240? Yes, but its easy and so worth it. Hope this helped.

Q: 3. Does it include a lens hood?

A: Yes. the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM does come with a lens hood.

Q: 4. Is the manual focus linear for repeatable focus pulls, or is it focus by wire?

A: Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM Lens (Sony E) has a linear response manual focus control. It ensures that the focus ring responds directly and repeatably to subtle control when focusing manually.

Q: 5. Is this made in Japan? Or Thailand? Thank you!

A: All three of my G master lenses say Thailand

Q: 6. Is this a macro lens or have macro capabilities

A: No, as already stated this is an amazing portrait lens, but it is not a macro lens. Its maximum native magnification is 0.12X. You could use it in macro situations with the addition of extension tubes, but you would probably prefer the experience with a true macro lens like the Sony 90mm FE macro.

Q: 7. Looking to switch from canon 5d3 set up with primes to Sony. I love my 85 1.2 clearly. Does this lens compare on a A7RII? I don't own any native e mount lenses yet so I feel like I haven't given the Sony a fair shot yet. Just canon lenses with adapter rings.

A: In my opinion, native lenses are the way to go except for exotic (noctilux etc). Most manufacturers rely on software correction in camera that only work with their lenses. As for the SONY primes, I really like than all. In fact the 35 2.8 is insanely sharp (and portable). As for the 85 1.4 it is an amazing lens. The bokeh is silky and smooth. Focus is fast.

Q: 8. This lens is 3 years old. Is it worth investing in it or maybe Sony might come up with a newer version this or next year?

A: This lens produces a beautiful image for Sony Full Frame E-Mount Cameras. We cannot speak to what new releases will be coming down the line for lenses, but lenses are not like cameras in how they hold their value when new releases come out. This will be worth the investment for years to come.

Q: 9. linear?

A: This lens uses a Linear as opposed to Rotational focusing motor. A Linear motor moves the focusing elements in a straight line. This enables smooth, fast and silent Autofocus.

Q: 10. Will this work on an FX6 natively or does in need an adapter?

A: This will work directly on an FX6 because both the FX6 and this lens have a Sony E mount.

Sony continues their roll-out of incredible glass! These are expensive optics, but you really do get what you pay for in the case of Sony lenses. I can't think of anything bad to say about this 85mm lens: it's unbelievably sharp, with beautiful rendering, bokeh and contrast, lack of chromatic aberration, and feels very well made. Love the clickable aperture ring. If I could make one criticism, it would be that the lens doesn't seem to have a particular 'character' in its rendering, the way some Leica lenses are reputed to have, or the way that the Canon 85mm f1.2 is famous for having. But I actually see this as a positive - this is simply a perfect portrait lens, and doesn't need any 'unique character' or 'wild bokeh.' Its lack of character, if you can call it that, makes it more timeless and versatile.

I've been on the fence about taking the leap from DSLR to mirrorless and with a family wedding on the horizon I made the decision to purchase a Sony a7R iv with the FE 85mm f1.4 GM lens. Mind you this is after decades of shooting with Minolta and Sony a glass, including the Sonnar 85mm f/1.4 Zeiss lens which is a superb lens in its own right.

With less than an hour of familiarization with the new a7Riv I went out and shot about a dozen images in aperture priority and full auto. The lens was positively amazing and a quantum leap beyond the DSLR / a glass setup I've been using with great confidence for a decade. First thing I noticed was how fast it focused, though I will need to work on learning how to maximize use of the various autofocus settings on the camera.

Color is amazing and the bokeh at f1.4 is extraordinary. Image quality is superb across the full aperture range with no noticable distortion or vignetting. Honestly, next to the 135mm f1.8, this may be one of the best overall portrait lenses Sony has ever produced. Coupled with the a7Riv, with it's super high resolution and a mid to low ISO setting at f1.4, I was able to crop a head on photo of a horse in the pasture to point where it was possible to see the individual strands of hair in her mane in fine detail. Positively amazing.

Is it worth the price? For a professional or serious amateur who is looking for the very best, the answer is YES.

Unfortunately the majority of my camera gear was recently stolen :( However, while I had this lens it was fantastic. The separation you can achieve at F1.4 is simply stunning! It really does make ordinary pictures look phenomenal. One day ill buy another copy of this incredible lens.

Definitely intended for portrait type shots. So clear and easy to use. The autofocus is a little slow, but I have no complaints. Quick and easy shipping as well.

Sharp, clear, dreamy. Really a powerhouse. Sometimes you get a little too used to using zooms but then a lens like this reminds you how good it can be.

Buying a product online isn't always easy. I like how easy it is to buy something from B & H. Easy to order, orders are processed quickly and the order arrives in a couple of days. It doesn't get any easier than that. Thank you B & H. The lens is way good. I was out shooting with it this morning. I'm glad I purchased it.

Hands down my favorite lens. It's kind of heavy and the autofocus is a little noisy, but the image quality is outstanding. The bokeh is sooo smooth and the sharpness is out of this world. Owning this lens makes me so happy. If you shoot video or have a limited budget or want to travel light, go with the 85mm 1.8 which is also a super lens. But if your main focus is stills and you want the best out there, this is your goto lens.
