Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. can i chain my 8tb G-raid to a 12tb g-raid external drive?
A: I have it daisy chained to a series of 8TB thunderbolt drives. Thunderbolt 2 and the original are the same physical connectors.
Q: 2. Could the drives be replaced with SSD drives? And would this increase the read/write speeds?
A: Yes, you can replace the drives with SSDs and would boost overall performance.
Q: 3. Will there ever be an upgrade to make this system compatible with Windows 10?
A: The formatting utility to convert this drive for use in Windows can be found at the link below:a href= http://download.g-technology.com/software/GTechnologyFormatWizard_Installer_1.1.27.zip target= _blank http://download.g-technology.com/software/GTechnologyFormatWizard_Installer_1.1.27.zip/a
Q: 4. Do the files and folders stored on this device show up in spotlight or Alfred search results as internally stored content does?
A: Yes, however this would be depending on the indexing settings you have set up on your machine.
Q: 5. Any real downsides to running the drive as JOBD, using software like carbon copy to use the second drive as a clone and backup daily? In JOBD, does my computer recognize two drives on the desktop? Im kinda paranoid running RAID 1 because if the RAID controller gets damaged or something, itll cost thousands to recover my data. I know its unlikely, but this company doesnt offer data recovery with their warranty, theyll just give you a new unit. If I run JOBD, I ASSUME I could swap one of the drives into a standard controller/housing and recover my data?
A: I assume you could do as you say, running it as JBOD and using CCC to back-up but you face the issue of having only a single copy of the data for up to a day (until your scheduled back-up runs).Running RAID 1 gives you 'immediate' mirroring to protect your data against a hard disk failure. What is more likely to fail? The hard disk or the RAID controller? If you want to do JBOD, you are paying a lot of extra money for this unit and wouldn't be getting maximum value out of it. I ran it as RAID 1, so i took advantage of what the drive offers, and used CCC to back that up to another single hard drive for 'backup'.
Q: 6. do these drives get hot? I have one and I can barely touch it it's so hot.
A: Mine does not get hot at all and it's remarkably quiet.
Q: 7. Can you connect the grand to commuter with Thunderbolt and then attach a HDD with USB -Cto the g-raid?
A: You can attach this device to multiple thunderbolt device using a feature called daisy chaining
Q: 8. How do you change it from RAID 0 to RAID 1? I dont see any hardware toggle/switch/dial.
A: Hi, you would need the RAID Configration Utility, which you can freely download from our website :a href= http://support.g-technology.com/support/g-raid-usb-removable target= _blank http://support.g-technology.com/support/g-raid-usb-removable/aThere is a version for Mac or Windows depending on your platform, and in the How to section on that page there are instructions you may follow. If you need any help, please feel free to contact us :a href= http://support.g-technology.com/contact/contact_support target= _blank http://support.g-technology.com/contact/contact_support/a
Q: 9. Are the drives hot swappable?
A: The drives are not hot swappable on this unit.
Q: 10. I want to first test raid 1 to see if it is fast enough for my workflow, but likely will need raid 0. Is it easy to switch raid configuration? I assume I will have to reformat, correct?
A: The G-Technology G-RAID 12TB 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (2 x 6TB) will come formatted for macOS and will need to reformatted if you would like to use it for Windows or the change the RAID configuration. There will be a user interface to assist you.
