The 39mm Formatt-Hitech Firecrest ND Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 4-stop reduction in exposure. This 1.2 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

ND 1.2 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 4-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistant for greater overall durability.

Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I think I have seen some VND's have a total size larger than its threading part, which ends up blocking the ability to mount a lens hood. Does the size of this filter prevent the mounting of a lens hood?

A: Most Variable ND filters have a larger outer diameter than the thread in size. Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (58mm) has a front and mount thread of 58mm. However, the outer diameter of this filter is 62mm therefore if your lens hood is not wide enough it may not fit with this filter mounted on your lens.

Q: 2. Do these SuperSlim filters fit in a standard filter tray or do you need a special tray for them?

A: 2mm 4 x 5.65" tray that comes as a part of the Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cine Superslim IRND 5 Filter Kit allows you to adapt the filters to any ARRI standard-width 4 x 5.65" matte box tray. The Superslim Tray allows you to use the filters with common matte box brands like Bright Tangerine, ARRI, Chrosziel, and others.

Q: 3. Many variable neutral density filters either cause a color shift at darker settings or the dreaded "X-effect" on wide angle lenses. Does this filter suffer from those issues?

A: Any variable ND over 6-7 stops can create the X-effect. And that is the deign and physics of a variable ND filter. And it depends on the lens you are using and the light you are shooting under. As for the color shift almost all have some color shift including the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (77mm). These are higher models of filters, https://bhpho.to/3TSB4JH

Q: 4. Where can we buy a 0.3 filter? And also, how can we buy additional filter trays?

A: Unfortunately, we currently do not carry or special order the 0.3 / 1-stop filter (manufacturer code FCUCS4x5ND0.3) at the moment; the other Ultra Cine Superslim IRND filters are available as special order items through Firecrest. We do sell additional filter trays separately here: https://bhpho.to/3bvQXp1

Q: 5. Does anyone knows what size is the larger diameter size of this filter the top part, not the 82mm the other size?, need to know to get a cap for it

A: The Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (82mm) has a front threading of 82mm. These Urth filters have the same size threading front and back for easy stacking and lens cap use.

Q: 6. What size is the outside thread for a cap?

A: The front of this filter has a 46mm thread as well as the rear threads.

Q: 7. Is this filter multi-coated?

A: Yes, the manufacturer has stated that the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (77mm) has an 8-layer nano coating.

Q: 8. Do these fit okay in matte boxes that don't use tray slots I.e. wooden camera zip box pro. Worried there might be some play because of 2mm thickness instead of 4mm

A: We would not recommend using the Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cine Superslim IRND 5 Filter Kit with matte boxes that don't have filter tray slots, as you mentioned, their thinner design can cause issues if they are used without a filter tray.

Q: 9. Do they fit the SmallRig's Lightweight Carbon Fiber Matte Box?

A: Yes, those filters should work in the SmallRig Lightweight Carbon Fiber Matte Box.

Q: 10. hi B&H, Where is this filter made? and what type of optical glass used?

A: According to our records, the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (43mm), BH #URVND24004 is made in China. Please note that this is subject to change at any time.
