Epson does not seal the cases of their scanners so a new scanner may well have internal dust that will spoil scans in certain positions on the glass. If that happens, it is very difficult to correct.

A: There are YouTube videos for scanning directly on the glass without holders. It takes some initial cost for materials but is a much better approach.

The film guides that come with the scanner are awkward (at best); I don't use them for large format work. For medium and miniature format work I use an old Canon CanoScan 8800F (see ad, attached). It is smaller, cheaper, and the film guides work well for smaller film sizes.
