Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will my monfrotto quick rehearse plates work with this gimbal. I have several plates mounted on different cameras and lenses my tripod is a monfrotto 290

A: I tend to agree with the previous responders'.

Q: 2. Is this support compatible with my Manfrotto 290?

A: It works perfect on my Manfrotto 3021bpro!!! I'm very pleased with my Manfrotto heavy lens support

Q: 3. What specific improvements have been made to this third model that make it superior to the second one?

A: The, Fringer EF-FX Pro III Autofocus Adapter for Canon EF Lens to FUJIFILM X-Mount now has weather sealing compared to version two.

Q: 4. I would mount a Nokkor 200-500mm on it. Are there any problems with access to focus, zoom, switches for this particular lens?

A: I looked at your lens. There should be no problem with access to zoom and switches. However, there may be some adjusting you need to do for the focus ring closest to the end of the lens. I have my Sigma 150-600mm Sport lens mounted on this gimbal head. The only problem I have is manual focus. It is not that big of a problem, but it takes getting used to it.

Q: 5. I recently purchased a Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod With SBH-100 Ball Head. Is this gimbal compatible with my tripod ?

A: The Vanguard Alta Pro 284 CT Carbon Fiber Tripod legs are compatible with the Manfrotto 393 Heavy Duty Gimbal.

Q: 6. Which tripod fits this gimbal head best?My heaviest lens weighs 3kg, and 4.x kg with body and grip.

A: I have the Manfrotto 057 Carbon 3 Section tripod. The specs on it say it supports up to 40 lbs (18 kg)but the heaviest lens, camera, collar combo I use on it is about 6 lbs (2.7 kg). It looks like overkill but I don't have to use any added weight to stabilize tripod, and can shoot at odd angles without worrying about it tipping over. However it is quite expensive. So for your 4 kg rig I'd say it would be more than enough. However I'd suggest you look for a somewhat less heavy duty tripod, and less expensive. Maybe aluminum instead of carbon.

Q: 7. I have the manfrotto heavy lens support which I use on a mangrotto tripod (Canon 7dii with 100-400 lens and 1.4 or 2.0 extender.). It's great for birds in flight and panning but if I'm trying to shoot something that is or becomes stationary it's frustrating that I can't lock down the pivoting. Every time I touch the camera I lose my position. Am I missing something? Is there a way to secure your position if desired?

A: I used it with a Pentax K3 and the 150-450mm zoom to shoot the recent eclipse. It never moved a mm after I prebalanced it and set the side tension. Check your side tension assembly against the parts diagram, maybe youre missing a washer.

Q: 8. How well does this gimbal work when mounted on a mono-pod?

A: While gimbals work best on tripods, the Manfrotto 393 Heavy Duty Gimbal Type Telephoto Lens Support can be mounted onto a monopod and would offer similar ease-of-movement compared to use on a tripod. As a monopod is not free-standing and requires you to hold the monopod with one hand, you may need a little practice in setting/changing monopod height while then trying to position the camera, but it can be done, and as the gimbal is supporting the weight of the lens and allowing for freedom of movement, it will simply take a few minutes of practice to become accustomed to a system that works for you.

Q: 9. Will this work with a feisol 3442 tripod ?

A: I use it with an Manfrotto/bogen 3258, Gitzo Cremalire 3 and a Gitzo monopod, so any support system that is stable, has a 2 inch base plate and can handle the weight of the camera, the lens and the Manfrotto 393 head, should be OK.

Q: 10. What is the inside distance between the vertical parts of the "U" shaped cradle? Thinking of mounting my 20x100 giant binoculars if this space is wide enough. Thanks.

A: The space between the uprights is approximately 4.25".
