Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this a suitable replacement drive for a Lacie 2big Thunderbolt 2 RAID? Lacie calls for specific hard drives as replacement like ST2000DM001/1ER164-570. Thanks

A: If the maker specifies particular drive, I would contact the maker of the computer. This HDD seems to work fine and is like others I have used from other makers, but on a desktop with a Gigabyte MB.

Q: 2. Is there a manufacturer warranty with this drive?

A: This product has a two year, limited manufacturer's warranty.

Q: 3. are they 9YN166-302 CC4C and W1F?

A: Sorry, unfortunately we do not have access to devices serial numbers, versions or firmware versions.

Q: 4. Sustained read/write speeds, anyone?

A: Seagate does not provide read/write speeds for the drive, however I was able to locate independent tests showing average read speeds of 160MB/s, and write speeds of 150MB/s.

Q: 5. Is this a 7200 rpm drive?

A: YES, this is a 7200 rpm drive

Q: 6. can this be used with a macbook pro?

A: The MacBook Pro would need a smaller size (dimension ) as in a 2.5 inch drive.B&H has many choices in that size. Remember to make sure you are looking at a 2.5 inch drive. Good luck.

Q: 7. Bare drive?

A: Yep, no parts, pieces, or screws. Makes for a great external hard drive to store files, photos, and vids. You can get an external hard drive docking station for this purpose.

Q: 8. Is this 7200RPM?

A: Per Seagate: Spindle speed (RPM) 7200 ± 0.2%

Q: 9. I need to use 4 drives in an OWC Thunderbay 4 enclosure (thunderbolt 2). A reviewer has commented that these drives have trouble being connected externally via USB 3. Has anyone reported a problem with these as I will need them for a software configured RAID5?

A: These drives are not designed for a RAID solution. For that, Seagate makes the Ironwolf drives.

Q: 10. Is this a plug & play component? Can a novice install this drive? Does it require any programming or optimizing ?

A: Works perfect in a Mac or external. You may need to format but the Mac will tell you if that's needed.

I purchased 6 of these drives from B&H over the years for my 2 Mac Pro's. They are great drives. Never fail and transfer files fast. Amazing product for the price.

First some negatives, which are not an issue in my case: As you may have read elsewhere, these drives are not suitable for a NAS. They spin slowly at 5400 RPM. They use Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR), which makes them unsuitable for write-intensive use. (A few years ago I thought one of my earlier Seagate SMR drives was defective when the write speed slowed to a crawl, perhaps 10 MBS/sec. However, everything was fine; I paused my writing and let the drive move data into it's final position, and the speed picked up again.) In my case I use the drives to store backups and video, and read from them much more than I write.

My three drives were well packed in OEM packaging. I used Seagate's verify website to check that the drives were genuine. I used the HDTune utility ERASE function to write random data to the entire surface of each drive and then read data back to verity each byte written. (A 30-hour process per drive.)

During these tests the SMART data showed many seek errors and many CRC errors, all of the latter being correctable. I assume that these errors are normal for drives of this sort, as has been the case with similar drives that I've used for several years with no problem.

People sometimes talk about these drives not being great but I haven't run into that problem. I use them to store old video footage (I run a video production company). I usually pull the stored drives out from time to time during a year and they alway work. Cheap solution to long term storage backup.

I'm happy with that, it works well, silent and fast in my Synology. I want to buy one more, but there are no chance to get that in stock.

Use the platter drive for backups of pics and vids. Great price. Speed is OK but I didn't purchase it for speed. Backup files overnight. Very satisfied

I use this as a storage drive on my home PC, with my main drive an NVMe ssd. So speed isn't much of a concern (5400 rpm vs 7200) and it should be pretty reliable. Plus it is very quiet. Finally, family of Seagate drives offer good value for the $ in general, and B&H had the best price I could find, so overall I am quite pleased so far.
