This camera is great for beginners. I am usually the type to just shoot in auto because it seems easier, but the pictures don't always come out as great as they could. Shooting in manual on this thing is super easy, and all the information is right there on the LCD so you know what your settings are without having to look into the viewfinder each time. I absolutely love it. My fianc has the Canon 5D Mark II, which he will let me borrow any time I want, but it's so heavy, and for my smaller hands, this camera is perfect. It's lightweight, but has a durable body (not plastic) and looks fantastic. I've gotten so many looks and compliments already. I think it looks like a Stormtrooper camera! :)

Wanting to get into more serious digital photography, I opted for the Pentax K-x, two lense kit from B&H. The camera is a pleasure to use. Many features are simple to navigate to, digital effects are better than I expected. With so many options available, it will take some time to find the features desired for a photograph. Works well as simple point and shoot, but far more elaborate features are available to customize amazing renditions. I bought it mainly for the HDR features. In-camera HDR feature is quite good, auto bracketing for HDR is great with ability for up to +/- 3 EV steps for customized HDR manipulation with software. Going from medium format film photography to digital is easier than expected. Each shot can be customized prior to exposure so you know what your getting before you take the shot. Camera far and away exceeded my expectations.

I ordered this mainly to take better pictures of my kids with the possibilities to capture some amazing shots to blow up now and then. We did a lot of research and after using it, it's definitely well worth the money. Lightweight, user friendly and lightening quick. Only wish I;d bought it sooner.

Very easy to use and features rich. With adapters you can virtually use any lens on this camera. Picture quality is very good. One interesting thing I noticed is that the default settings' saturation is high so you might lose details cause the in camera post processing will ruining the details. Default setting may look vivid at beginning but when you notice details got lost then it is too late since it is already gone ^_^. I'm trying to see how to avoid heavy post processing on K-x. Another thing is the lens selection. I used to be a Nikon user. I am surprised to see that some 3rd party lenses are considered better than Pentax lenses. For example some people think Tam 17-50mm f2.8 is far better than Pent 16-45mm f4. I seldom see this happen very often in Nikon users. So if you are in high fever on equipments then probably you'll need to choose Nikon or Canon to save some money on switch gears. But for general user that need a fast DSLR to capture kids actions then with the 4.7 fps K-x you'll be happy always. Canon 5d mk-ii can do 5 fps as well with a heil of many to invest. So smile again! ^_^

I use my cameras for landscape photography as well as for pet portraits and action shots, and for action shots at places like Medieval Faires. At this price point I do not see how you can go wrong with the Pentax K-x. Shutter lag is almost non existent. Focusing is fast except for in low light (almost dark) conditions. It can take maintain focus and take multiple shots in burst mode with ease. The multituide of settings which range from full automatic to full manual give you as much or as little control over the camera as you so choose. Do NOT let the use of AA lithium or rechargebale batteries frighten you. As long as you make sure you are running the latest firmware battery life will not be an issue. I run my equipment hard with extended on time (During 4 hours at a Medieval Faire the camera will be on for more than two hours of actual time) waiting for that right moment and I am still on the first set of batteries after more than a week and perhaps 200 actual images taken. The kit lense is fairly good. Do expect to pick up a Class 6 to Class 10 memory card to take full advantage of this camera's lightning speed in burst mode. You will not regret the few extra dollars spent. High ISO performance is as good as others have stated. Surprisingly good in fact. Negatives? I wish the informational display in the viewfinder was a little larger and a little brighter. The K-x can have difficulty focusing in near dark conditions on the normal settings (Night scene mode not engaged)and in low contrast conditions, but that is true of many cameras. Some reviewers state that the image stabilization is not all that great. I have found it to be more than adequate for my needs. This is a great not so entry level DSLR camera at a very reasonable price point.
