The UV-IR Cut #486 MRC Basic Filter from B+W is a 58mm ultraviolet and infrared control filter that is useful for digital cinematography and still photography. When used, 88% of ultraviolet light waves are blocked at 380 nanometers, along with 95% of infrared light waves at 700 nanometers, ensuring that light limited to the visible spectrum is recorded. When used along with multi-stop neutral-density filters, potential infrared color shifts are prevented or minimized, preserving color accuracy throughout the frame. This filter also reduces unwanted blue castes while recording digital video or still photos under daylight that also features intense ultraviolet light.

B+W MRC Basic filters are made with the exclusive Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) nano premium coating technology. This high-quality broadband coating is applied on both sides and enhances the optical imaging properties, allowing uniform and increased transmittance across the entire light spectrum to be achieved, with minimal physically induced remaining reflection. The nano all-around protection on the filter glass also ensures increased scratch resistance and extremely fast, easy cleaning, providing a long filter life. The slim filter ring design is compatible with wide-angle lenses with an equivalent width of a 17mm full-frame lens. The top knurling is redesigned for enhanced gripping.

88% of ultraviolet light waves are blocked at 380 nanometers, before which they are further removed, reducing bluish cast of daylight when recording video or still photos.

95% of infrared light waves are blocked at 700 nanometers, after which they are progressively eliminated.

Useful with CCD or CMOS sensors to filter out infrared light pollution that causes color shifts frequently associated with high-definition recording with multi-stop neutral-density filters.

Does not require adjustments to exposure while in use.

Thirty layers of interference coatings on the front surface limit light that falls on a digital camera sensor to the visible spectrum.

Multicoated rear surface prevents internal ghosting and reflections.

Constructed from Schott glass for optical clarity.

F-Pro brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.

55mm front filter threads allow use with other filters to protect the front surface or combine with other effects.

Plastic case for storage and transport.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What's the difference between this & older the 25mm F/1.7 Leica lens?

A: The older Pana/Leica 25mm lens is f1.4 and metal construction, this lens is smaller, lighter, plastic (except for the lens mount which is metal) and f1.7

Q: 2. What does the SE stand for?

A: SE stands for Special Edition. The Nikon 28mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Z Lens (SE) inherits its design from the classic NIKKOR lenses released around the same time as the Nikon FM2 film SLR camera, with features that faithfully reproduce the designs of that time, such as knurling, and a prominent control ring.

Q: 3. Why pay more for Sony, when Tamron has similar lenses for less?

A: We stock a variety of similar lenses at different price points and of different quality, so customers have a choice.

Q: 4. Does it comes in gray?

A: At this time this lens is only available in black.

Q: 5. which is better, the 25mm or 20mm?

A: the 20mm is a pancake lens and is older. The 25mm has better auto focus and is much faster. However I have noticed some small lens flares when taking shots of buildings/sky they show up as darker circles due to the coating on the lens but can easily be fixed in photoshop. When i first started seeing these spots I thought my lens had issues, but it is not in every picture.

Q: 6. Will this work with Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera?

A: Since this lens is Designed for Micro Four Thirds. We suggest you check the specifications for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera to confirm.

Q: 7. Can someone recommend a good protective filter for this lens?

A: The B+W 77mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter would be recommended. This is very well made with excellent quality glass. http://bhpho.to/2flQdAS

Q: 8. Does anyone make a square lens hood that will fit on the 28mm Z mount lens?

A: Nikon NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE) Lens has a 52mm front thread. You can use a low-profile circular or petal shape lens hood. The lens does not have a bayonet mount for a dedicated lens hood nor there is a square lens hood with a 52mm clip or screw-on option.

Q: 9. Where is it manufactured?Thanks

A: Mine says Made in China.

Q: 10. hello, is this full fuctionable on Olympus OMD series?

A: This lens works just like any Olympus lens on an OMD camera. I have an omd em5 and it is a great lens. takes great pix even at f1.7. Works with all functions.

I'm very uncomfortable leaving my lenses unprotected. This filter puts my mind at ease. Does what it should do, protects the glass and has no effect on the image.

I purchased this filter to use on the Nikon AF-S Nikkor DX 18-300 MM lense, beautiful color, very vivid, works well to bring out clouds. The only problem I have with it is, it tightends down way to tight all on its own on my other filter or the lense itself, which makes it extremely hard to unscrew. Otherwise a beautiful filter by B + W.

Bottom Line: If you need a top quality filter and you aren't putting this on an extra wide-angle lens, get it. You won't be disappointed. I use B+W filters on my lenses and the fact that the XS-Pro version has a hydrophobic coating may make it easier to clean than other B+W filters. However, I was planning to use this 82 mm filter to protect (and weather seal) my Canon 16-35 mm f/2.8 lens and I found that the XS-Pro exhibits slightly more vignetting at 16 mm than B+W's slim version when used with a full-frame body. For this reason I opted for the slim version in the end. Pros: *Works with most normal lens caps (Slim version doesn't have front threads so comes with a special cap) *Should be easier to keep clean than F-Pro or Slim versions without the hydrophobic coating Cons: More vignetting on some extra wide angle lenses.

What can I say? This filter uses Schott glass, and is multi coated. It is made in Germany, not China. For the money I spent on this filter, I figured it's a good investment as compared what it would cost to replace the front element of my 105 MM, F 2.8 Macro lens.

Did not realize this was a slim filter, so returned it for the regular Pro version. I bought it because of the Nano cleaning feature, which seems like it only comes on the XS version. Also, the description was not clear that the XS means extra slim. I buy B&W filters and the quality is great.

Use this mainly as a protective filter. Love the fact that it is a brass ringed filter - NO MORE STICKING!! You can just feel by the weight that this is a quality product. I have bought my last aluminum ringed filter.

Replacement for a different brand, and beside offering protection, it also adds an improvement to the green and blue colors outdoors.

B+W continues to be my favorite. Brass construction, and tough, cleanable coating with minimum flare. It's tempting to cheap out on this kind of filter, but you'll be glad you didn't.

I have high-end, multi-coated filters from Hoya, Heliopan, and B&W. I believe all of them cause visible reflections when pointed toward light sources, which I especially notice shooting indoor sports. I've never done optical tests to compare them, but I've never actually noticed any optical differences. I only get B&W now, however, because I have found them easiest to clean. I use them primarily for lens protection, but confess I baby the filters as much as I baby the lenses. :-)

Joking aside, this is a great filter. I always put a UV filter on my lenses, right out of the box. It's a transparent lens cap. The front element stays pristine, and the filter takes the abuse. Why replace a damaged front element when you can replace a damaged filter instead? The B+W filters, though, are difficult to damage. they clean up quickly, and are optically excellent. Spend a bit more up front, get a better piece of glass to shoot through that will last longer.
