Guitarists looking to expand their cabinet IRs for TH-U SuperCabinet modeling software will be impressed with Overloud TAF BLACKBLUE, an IR library that extensively captures the full-sounding guitar tone of a Custom 2x12 with Warehouse B&B (Alnico) speakers.

The driver represents the iconic sound of Brian May's Vox amplifier. The speaker provides a fat tone with a beautiful resonance in the lower mids. This library features IRs systematically captured, with 14 mics for over 100 total impulse responses. The mics recorded IRs in 8 positions each with two distances using a Neve 1073 preamp. The cabinet is perfect for slower melodies or big clean chords.

The SuperCabinet IR processor makes it easy to blend and create custom cabinet tones, and export IRs in WAV format for use in external IR loaders and modelers. Created by Andy from Theampfactory in his Orangetreestudios HQ, using a Custom 2x12 with Warehouse B&B (Alnico) speakers.

  • Graphically browse the IRs in the library
  • Blend them together
  • Craft new cabinet tones with the unique Multiband mode
  • Use the IR in the software
  • Export the IRs in WAV-file format, compatible with software IR loaders and all the major hardware modelers

The microphones used during the capture sessions for this IR library are:

  • AKG C414
  • Audix i5
  • Beyerdynamic M160
  • DPA 4011
  • Electrovoice RE20
  • Neumann U47
  • NeumannU87

  • Sennheiser MD421
  • ShinyBox 46MXL
  • Shure 545 SD
  • Shure SM7B

Every microphone has been moved to 4 different horizontal positions (Cap, Cap Edge, Cone, and Cone Edge), two distances each, for a total of 8 IRs each. All the measurements have been created with the Neve 1073 preamp. All IRs in the library are phase aligned, so they can be blended without phase cancellation.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there any way to adapt this to the Sony A7R3 to be able to trigger the Nikon SB200 macro flashes?

A: Unfortunately there is not a way to adapt this for use with Sony multiinterface shoes.

Q: 2. Does it work with Canon Speedlite 550EX Flash?

A: YES, works with 530EX II and 430 EX II flashes

Q: 3. Is there any point in getting this for my Nikon D810? I understand the D810 has commander mode built in, but I am looking for a method to create a stronger infrared signal to read my off camera Speedlights.

A: I don't know if this will get you better range than the built in commander mode, but it does offer other advantages. First, I believe the built in commander uses the pop-up flash to signal the off-camera flashes. Even if you have it set to not contribute to the exposure, it will still probably add noticeable light in some scenarios. The pop-up flash can also cause people to blink. This avoids all of that. You could tape a piece of IR plastic over your pop-up, but this is definitely more professional looking. Last, the UI on this makes it very convenient to make setting changes. Especially if you are not using i-TTL, the UI on this makes it easy to adjust the flash power of each group without having to go through the camera menu. The downside of this is that you have to attach something to your camera while built in commander is, well... built in. In short, I don't know if this will get you better range, but it offers other advantages and conveniences. This does have better range than the Nikon SU-800, and also has a more compact shape. Whether those conveniences are worth the price is a matter of opinion. I got this because my camera body doesn't have built in commander. If my next camera body has built in commander, I will probably still use this. I typically just leave this attached anyway since I don't put my flashes on-camera very often. I am just an amateur, so my use cases differ greatly from a professional.

Q: 4. Is this compatible with the Pentax K-3?

A: Yes, it is compatible with the K3.

Q: 5. Will this work on my D500 to use Nikon SB 700 speedlight off camera?

A: Yes this will work with a D500 and a SB700.

Q: 6. Can each group (A, B, C) be independently set to different channels? Example: Group A to Channel 4, and Group B to Channel 2 at the same time.

A: You may set the desired group and the channel individually on the Nikon wireless infrared i-TTL flash(es) you own. Each flash does not have to be on the same group/channel. However, while you may also set different groups and channels on the Vello FWIRC-N FreeWave IR TTL Flash Commander for Nikon, you may only use one channel at a time on the Commander. As such, regardless of their group setting, if the off-camera flashes are not set to the channel actively set on the Vello FWIRC-N FreeWave IR TTL Flash Commander, then they will not fire.

Q: 7. Does this work with a very old Canon 420EX ?

A: I use it to trigger the 550EX and the 420Ex.

Q: 8. Is this compatible with Nikon Z6 and Z7 bodies?

A: I just tried on my Z7 with two Nikon R1 ring flashes. It worked perfectly. Very annoyed with no way to trigger remote flash from Z7. Not sure I like the twist-tight onto hot-shoe. Nikon flash's flip-tight is much better.

Q: 9. Is it compatible with the KP camera?

A: Here is a list of compatible cameras Pentax K-01 Pentax K-1 Pentax K-1 II Pentax K-3 Pentax K-3 II Pentax K-3 III Pentax K-30 Pentax K-5 II Pentax K-5 IIs Pentax K-50 Pentax K-S1 Pentax K-S2 Pentax MX-1 Pentax Optio WG-3 Pentax Q Pentax Q-S1 Pentax Q10 Pentax Q7 Pentax X-5 Ricoh WG-50 Ricoh WG-60

Q: 10. Does it work with Canon Speedlite 550EX Flash?

A: Yes it does! Works great! Simply set 550EX to slave setting and fire away. I have used it with my 550
