A: No, WD 6TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive does not have a physical on/off switch. It is designed to power on and off automatically with the computer. If you need to power it down manually, you would need to safely eject the hard drive from the computer and then disconnect the power supply.

A: When on but not being used, it makes a very faint sound like a small fan, though i really can't say. On the other hand, there are many opening all over the casing and the drive never gets even warm, let alone hot.

Q: 9. Is there any chance of this product over heating? I plan to use it as storage, but I often run Finalcut ProX, and or Adobe Photoshop on devices intended for storage.

A: In the normal vertical position they get pretty warm. The ventilation in these hard plastic cases is not great and on long runs they will get toasty. I run them horizontally and use a small fan ($15) and run them for hours. They stay cool and never tip over. They are great drives and never seem to wear out!

A: The WD 8TB My Book Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is 8 Terabytes. Depending on your operating system it will either show up as 8TB or about 7.2TB.
