FP4 Plus from Ilford is a traditional medium-speed black and white negative film characterized by a fine grain structure with high acutance and sharpness, making it well-suited to enlarging and scanning. It has a nominal sensitivity of ISO 125/22° in standard chemistry, and its very wide exposure latitude enables exposing up to two stops under or six stops over while retaining usable results. In addition to general photographic applications, FP4 Plus is also an ideal choice for copy and internegative work, as well as scientific, technical, and industrial photography.

This item is one 36-exposure roll of 35mm film in a DX-coded cassette.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the total thickness of the 70mm film? (emulsion + base). Does "layer" thickness listed in the film specs indicate total thickness? I understand that there is no backing paper on this film. The 70mm film is not listed on the Ilford website. Thanks.

A: Yes the layer thickness listed here would indicate the total thickness.

Q: 2. For a photography course I'm taking next month, I need 10-15 rolls of Black and White Negative Film (35mm/Arista 400, Illford HP5 ASA 400, Kodak Tri-X ASA 400). Based on what I need, which product is best for me and if this Illford one is, which file format should I get? Thanks.

A: Ilford film is excellent, but I am a fan of Kodak Tri-X 400, 24 exposure.

Q: 3. What is the dimension of the packaging (length, width, height) of this 50 roll pack?

A: B&H may call it a 50 roll pack but in my experience, it's nothing of the sort - it's been years since B&H actually sent me the old white cardboard box full of foil wrapped bare rolls without the normal individual box and plastic canister. What I've actually got every time I've ordered in recent years is simply 50 of the standard boxed rolls factory packaged in 5 standard cellophane wrapped bricks of 10 rolls.Dimensions of the 10 roll brick is 19 cm x 8 cm x 6cm - the dimensions of 5 of those will depend on how B&H's shipping department stacks them in the box.B&H's bulk discounts are a bit of a joke as there's no saving in buying 1 roll or 50 rolls - it's exactly the same price so why bother? There are NO bulk discounts so I buy HP5 135-36 elsewhere..

Q: 4. What is expiration date of this film?Thank you.

A: Unfortunately, we do not have access to our inventory and cannot provide this type of information; however, any film that was within 6-months of its expiration date would be sold as short dated and listed as such on our site. All other film will be at least 6 months out from its expiration date.

Q: 5. can you use this film for a discovery 80 plus fuji camera ?

A: Yes.

Q: 6. Do you have DX code Reloadable Cartridge

A: Unfortunately, B&H does not carry auto DX 400 ISO reloadable film cassettes.

Q: 7. Why are all of your 120 roll films from kodak and Ilford more then what you can get them from the actual manufactures website?

A: Our buyers set the pricing for all items we sell based on what the manufacture charges us for the products.

Q: 8. is the 35mm dx coded?

A: Yup

Q: 9. 1) What is the expiration date?2) How to ship to Beijing China? EMS or FedEx or other? 3) In the ship of transportation through X light?Thank you

A: 1/ The expiration date is the date stamped by the manufacturer on the film box and it is the date until the manufacturer guarantees best performance under standard exposure and development. Film can be used few years after the expiration date without serious quality loss if the film is stored at low temperature (freezer). If not stored at low temperatures the film starts losing quality due to oxidation (slow process of fogging). Fogging becomes visible few years after the expiration date.2. How to ship to China? - sorry I'm not qualified to answer this question3. Do not let film go through X-ray - that will destroy unprocessed film that (undeveloped). Use special X-ray protective material to keep film safe when it passes through X-ray machines.

Q: 10. how many rolls

A: That is one roll of film.

My film of preference when shooting in the sun. It really comes to life when you have enough light and shadow, recording fantastic amounts of detail in both shadows and highlights, with a very pleasant mid-tones in between. For overcast and lower light shooting I prefer HP5+.

I use this for personal artwork in 35mm and 4 x 5 sizes. It is an excellent all around film with good exposure latitude and nice sharpness and grain. It is less touchy than the newer flat grained or 'T-grain films. The only films I like better are the retro films like Efke 50. However the retro films are not as versatile as FP4. When in doubt, FP4. I also favor Ilford's ongoing commitment to black and white photography and use their materials whenever possible.

As far as I remember, I have always used this kind of roll since I have found them. When I started shooting in B&W, I started with other brands as I didn't know this brand. Than, I was advised to use them ... and since then ... Now why ? Simply because it's the best for me. It's weird to say that, but on those films, colors render the best and you can really see the different shades, dark, light parts. You want great B&W pictures ? Take those rolls.

Best B&W 35mm film there is, hands down. Combined with push-processing, this delivers staggering results.

I've been shooting TMX and TMY for many years, but when I dragged out the 6x6 camera a few months back, I decided to try the Ilford pair, FP4 and HP5. One reason is that one-shot at 1:3, they both take the same developing time, so I can develop a tank with one roll of each. The Ilford films don't seem quite as crisp as TMX/TMY, but I'm getting just lovely skin tones--beautiful IMO. (I'm shooting 120 and using D-76.) Everybody has a different opinion but I'm VERY pleased with the Ilford HP5/FP4 pair for everyday use.

The Ilford FP4 film is for a 35mm camera. It is 125 speed which produces a more fine grain photograph than 400 speed film. Make sure you change the ISO or ASA on your camera to 125 when you use the film, or the camera will over or under expose the film.

I've used this film primarily for portraits and some landscapes, but have also been able to capture some motion (kids, parties). The grain is fine, so images are very crisp.
