Q: 2. How does this Really Right Stuff compare to the Arca Swiss Monoball Z1 heads?

A: Both are great quality heads with a high load capacity, but the RRS head has a nicer feel and smoother movement.

A: This is the ultimate ballhead in all respects. It is very smooth and rock steady. I believe RRS does make special panning attachments for video, but as I am not a video shooter I have no direct experience with that. Once you use RRS ballheads, plates and tripods, you will not use any others. Ever.

Q: 4. Is this the new version of the BH-55? RRS now as of a couple weeks ago has a newer version with different locking knobs and the pictures here show the old one.

A: Yes it does. I have seen and had hands on the old version. The new version, the right locking knob is somewhat elliptical and much more ergonomic. I like the new upper knob on the right much better.Steve

A: Yes it will, but not sure why you would want to do this. The BH-55 has it's own level on it.

A: No, this head is much wider than the Gitzo traveller head and will prevent it from folding up as small.

A: Both are equally competent at holding the camera in the clamp, and for both lever clamps I own neither has ever slipped. It is possible that the lever could be accidentally hooked on something and it could open without intending to, though it's never happened to me and I've hiked with tripod and camera over my shoulder a number of times. The screw knob would be the most positive and of the two if a person was really worried about accidental opening.What I like best about the lever clamp is the speed of opening, which facilitates quick swap of the camera from portrait to landscape orientation (if you have an L-plate) and fast adjustments of the camera's position in the clamp when adjusting centering.
