While traditional sandbags are an invaluable and irreplaceable component of professional grip kits, the Boa Bag adds a lighter-weight option for different applications on set. One common use of the Boa Bag is as a counterweight when mounting light fixtures and modifiers at an extended length using a boom arm. Boa Bags are quick and comfortable to carry from setup to setup thanks to the wide center strap with a sewn-in rubberized patch; this non-slip section also helps the bag rest securely on grip arms and other surfaces. Because the strap is long enough for the bag to fully wrap around stand legs and other shafts in a bola-like fashion, it cannot be easily knocked off its proper position.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. what is the length of the Matthews adapter -- looks longer than impact adapter (1.34 in)?

A: Sorry 2 3/4 not 3 3/4.

Q: 2. Will these grip 5/8 rod properly?

A: Micro grip heads except a 3/8 DIA. rod so a 5/8 will not fit.

Q: 3. Could you sand off the logo? Who's the person who thought putting the logo on the side was a good ides?

A: It can certainly be sanded off. Our logo is on there to ensure that you are working with the best box in the industry, built to withstand the rigor of on-set abuse.

Q: 4. Can 20L Urban Explore Backpack fit a Leica SL2 with a 24-90 attached ?

A: The Leica SL2 with the 24-90mm lens attached will fit inside of the Urban Explore Backpack 25L. You'll have space for several more lenses and accessories with that.

Q: 5. Hi. Is this kit available with black stands? Thanks.

A: Matthews only offers the kit with the chrome stands. You can buy 3 black stands ( B&H # MALSCP40BK ) and the case separately ( B&H # MA339776 ) if you wish.

Q: 6. Does this arm allow for the simultaneous use of two small video cameras? I'm envisioning something that would mount on top of a stable tripod allowing me to shoot with two video cameras at the same time (one for a wide shot, the other for close-ups). Thanks.

A: This has only two attachment points. One goes to the device being mounted, the other to the mounting platform. So I am not seeing a way to mount two cameras with this. I think the Vanguard Multi-Mount 6 Tripod Utility Bar B&H # VAMM6 is more of what you will need.

Q: 7. What's the weight capacity of these?

A: The load capacity of the Matthews MICROgrip Basic Kit BH #MAMGBK will vary depending on the orientation and configuration of the components.

Q: 8. Can the core unit of the 20L fit a Leica SL2 with the 24-90 attached ?

A: Yes, the Leica SL2 attached to the 24-90 lens will fit in the core unit of the Shimoda Designs Urban Explore Backpack (Boa, 20L).

Q: 9. Where do I find a longer one? Would like to be able to bolt my camera into a grip head.

A: If your camera is 1/4-20 you could a 7000 baby pin which is tapped female and add your own set screw. If your camera is 3/8 - 16 you can use a 429779.

Q: 10. How does the 25L handle the Nikon Z9 along with the 24-70mm and 70-200mm 2.8's?

A: The Shimoda Designs Urban Explore Backpack (Anthracite, 25L) can fit the Z9, the 24-70mm lens, and the 70-200mm lens. Just keep in mind it will be a tight fit.

I cant believe I am so excited about a sandbag. I have used the traditional folding pouch type bags for year.  Kind of a pain.
These are so much smaller, easier and faster to place and remove it is amazing.  I have the 10lbs now also.  It has cut down my set up time and it is just easier to bag stands!

Ok it's an expensive sandbag, what's the big deal? The big deal is that it's filled with steel shot which makes it safer than lead and more compact than sand or gravel. The strap in the middle is lined with a textured grippy material that helps it grip smooth tubular parts of light stands. It can also be wrapped for greater grip which makes it easy to secure to almost any part of a light stand, no hooks or other attachment devices needed. The stitching of the bag is strong and gives confidence that it will not burst at the seams. The design makes them easy to carry around. I have no problem bringing a couple of 5 lb versions on location shoots. Oh, steel shot is expensive. Try buying some and making your own bags (like I was planning) and you'll learn that it will cost you as much or more. Just get the BOAs and be done with it.

Hang it anywhere, and for additional utility, wrap it around just about any stand, tripod, boom or photo-thingy you're using. This weight is sleek, phenomenally well-constructed, and just plain super handy on location or in my studio. I genreally hate sand bags, hate lugging them, hate storing them, you get the picture. This weight bag is a joy to use.

How can you go wrong with anything Matthews makes? Legendary reputation in the film industry. I use this shot bag for my tripod to keep it rock solid. It's also great for light stands.

I bought a alb san bag for my video tripod when it is windy out. The Baby Boa Weight bag is great for travel/easy to carry. As a off road photographer i walk many miles in the desert to find that great shot and walking with a 5lb sandbag with a easy handle to carry makes this ideal.

Using this as an all-purpose sandbag for dollies, reflectors, stands, etc. Rubber lining in the middle helps keep it from slipping; separated weight sections great for wrapping around stands and slider dollies.
