To further describe this method: Match the focus point in your lens viewfinder with the item that you want in focus in your picture. Your item is now in focus. Another method that I use, which is more accurate, is 10x live view. Find the item in your composition that you want in focus. This, in my experience, has been much more accurate, and a more reliable way to compose and direct the focus onto the most important part of the image.
