The ball head allows you to rapidly track moving subjects and lock into a desired position with only one step (great for sports and wildlife). The geared head, on the other hand, is designed to precisely position the camera in three axes (pan, tilt, rotate) and is much better suited to macro work, portraiture and astrophotography. It's a real pain in the ass trying to quickly reposition for a moving subject, as you must separately reposition two or three axes. The ball head is the obvious general-purpose choice as it can still provide accurate framing (although not as conveniently as a geared head), and the geared head is a very good choice as a second head for special situations where accuracy is paramount.As others have pointed out, the choice of quick release is simply which QR system you prefer to use. I have chosen the Manfrotto RC2 system, and I have no regrets whatsoever.
