Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this printer work well with Windows? I have a photo booth/similar operation, but it is all supported on a windows based system?

A: I've been using this on Windows 8.1 and now 10. Yes, works well with both these operating systems

Q: 2. I would like to use this printer for a photobooth. Is this possible? Do you print straight to the paper strip? What consumables will I need? Cost etc?

A: The DS 40 will print 2-up on 4x6 paper when two 2x6 size are printed. A pack of 4x6 paper and ribbon costs $109 and will yield approximately 800 prints. You can view all the accessories on our web page under Accessories.

Q: 3. Does this version include the 2x6 cutter upgrade?

A: Yes this version does come with the 2x6 cutter upgrade.

Q: 4. When changing paper rolls at mid-roll, 3 sheets will get cut off during paper installation. Does this mean I loose 3 sheets every time I change paper type?

A: Yes, as part of its start up procedure after you load with paper it will cycle and cut three sheets short sheets. Once the paper is loaded your good to go it will not cut anymore if you turn the printer off and then back on it is just when you load the paper. I have both the DS40 and the DS80 great printers!

Q: 5. What's the approximate print amount per refill(when printing on photo paper 5x7)?

A: The DS40 is a dye sub printer and the printer ribbon and paper are sold in matched sets. For 5x7 prints, B&H# DNDS405X7A contains 2 rolls which each yield 200 5x7 prints or 400 total.

Q: 6. What type of ink does this printer use?

A: This printer doesn't take ink in the traditional sense; not like you buy ink or an ink cartridge and fill it up. This is a dye-sub printer, which uses a special ribbon that has the 3 colors plus a coating layer. Using a special heating process as the paper passes over each color ribbon, the color is turned to a gas and absorbed into the paper; this process is repeated for each of the three colors and then the film that seals the paper. So, if you buy this printer (which depending on your application, could be an incredible printer--I own both the DS-80 and DS-40) you buy the paper package also. With that package, you get the roll of paper (2 of them) with the dye-sub ribbon with it. The nice thing about this: 1, you get the paper and ink all in one; 2, the cost per page is fixed. For example, when purchasing a 4x6 paper package, you get 2 rolls of paper and 2 ribbons. Each ribbon/roll will produce 400 images (so 800 per case or package that you buy). There will be extra paper and ribbon left over (just in case the ribbon breaks or you have any possible), but you are guaranteed to get exactly the 800 images. So when you first load the paper and it does the self aligning and spits out 4 useless sheets of 4x6, that's not counted in the 800. I hope that helps, even though it was a long explanation. Any further questions, I'd be happy to help.

Q: 7. Can the DNP 8.0 x 10.0 Print Pack for DNP DS-80 Digital Photo Printer work in the Sony UP-DR80, if not which 8x10 paper pack will?

A: The DNP print media for their DS80 printers are not compatible with the Sony UP-DR80. We are not carrying any compatible print media for this Sony printer.

Q: 8. Can you use this printer without the scrap tray?

A: I have not tried but I think NO. There is sensor that detect if the scrap magazine is out. Why you would like to print without the tray? Where will go each cut part of the paper?

Q: 9. The picture prints but then it does not cut it. What is the problem?

A: go to printer properties and enable cutting

Q: 10. What's the difference between this product and product # DNDS404X6P? Are they the same? If so, why is the other one more expensive?

A: The DNDS404X6P is perforated so you are able to easily size 2x 2x6 inch strips from a 4x6, without the use of a trimmer, for photo booth-style printing.
